How to Weatherproof, Seal, and Finish a Wooden Picnic Table

In this video I show how to weatherproof, seal, and finish a wooden picnic table. If you have recently bought a pine picnic table from lowes or home depot then you need to seal it. Most wooden picnic tables will rot after just 1 year so finishing your new picnic table is essential. The key when learning how to weatherproof a picnic table is to take your time. How to seal a picnic table is easy but it takes a while. I was thinking about how to finish a picnic table and this is the best I could do. This is not a picnic table build video, but rather a picnic table DIY or a picnic table restoration before it needs it! If you finish your picnic table like this it should last many years.

For anyone else wondering he used Valspar One-coat exterior stain and sealer - Transparent in Cedar Naturaltone. 1 qt size (946mL = 0.99 quarts). Thanks for the vid I'll pick some of this up in the morning.

Is the sanding part like important. I have a picnic table that I got from home depot and the wood is a bit dirty but it’s pretty smooth as is should I still sand it down first or could I just apply the paint as is ?

Does the valspar stain come off on your clothing after drying? I tried an oil base stain and sealer and sure enough it did rub off on my clothing a bit when I sat down even a week after applying, I even wiped off any excess like it recommends, so I had to strip the benches I made down and need to weatherproof them somehow. Just curious since valspar is water based? cant be having people's butts look like burn hickory :P thanks in advance

I unfortunately didn’t know this was a thing and left mine outside in the rain and California got a lot of rain so when I looked back there my table looked grey lost that fresh wood look but I learn from my mistakes and I’ll buy another or if it’s possible to just stain it or is it ruined 🥲

You can probably salvage it. Power wash to get any residue/biologics out of the wood. Let it dry, sand it down, then seal it with something that stain the wood to your desired color. So long as it isn't rotting and falling apart you should should be good.
