Do you think the Water Filter Housing is contributing to low water flow? Maybe the new filter does not engage the water filter housing very well anymore? Kitchenaid refrigerator is 20 years old. Thank you for the video.

It is possible that could be causing your issue. You may also have a frozen line somewhere or the water valve itself could be going bad.

There is a plastic spacer that snaps into front of the water filter housing that does not come with it and does not show in parts diagram. The one on the housing I am replacing is broken so I can’t use in new housing. Is this part available and if not, is it necessary?

I have a Kenmore with the same configuration. My housing started to leak when new filters didn't fit into place anymore. Good video - made the job very easy. THANKS. The open end of a small 3/8" wrench makes removing the 2 water input tubes very easy.

The only thing I would add is that you have to turn off the water supply to the filter in order to disconnect the hose. this was a great help, though, thanks. It had become impossible to screw the filters in and out, but with the new housing, it is easy again.

I replaced this housing because it was pouring out water when the filer was removed. Put the new housing in and it was still happening. Hopefully it's just a defective part. Thanks for the video!

If the fittings are leaking the o'rings can be replaced. I picked up mine at a local hardware store. They are 1/4" ID 3/32" width and 5/16" ID 3/32" width for Whirlpool 2186443. I just replaced mine with these and they worked fine.

I received this same refrigerator from a friend. The water filter snapped at its base and it is stuck inside there. Thanks for this video. Now I know how to remove this so I can work on it. Should be a bit easier.

Older Kitchenaid refrs mount the filter housing behind the flanged bottom of the refr. It is impossible to remove from the front unless you do surgery on the plastic mounting flange of the housing to make it fit through the opening. I will use a multitool-vibratory saw to cut off the flange so the housing will come through the gap available. New housings mount in front of this bottom flange, so fitting the new housing in place will not be a problem. My water source is so good that a filter is not needed, so I plan to connect inlet & outlet tubes with a “union” to eliminate the filter altogether.

+Charles Godfrey OK I had to do the replacement today on my KSBP25INS00 Kitchenaid Counter Depth fridge, and I have the panel blocking removal of the housing through the front too. I'm hoping my experience helps other people with this issue. Things I tried based on what I've read here and other places. 1 - Lift the front of the fridge with 4x4's to get at it through the bottom. Well, my fridge has a metal panel on the bottom, so no dice. 2 - Remove the doors to take the front panel off. Turns out the panel is riveted on to the front, so no dice. 3 - Do surgery on the front panel like +Charles Godfrey, but it was hard to get the housing out because of the short tubes and unless you have super skinny arms, it's near impossible to remove the tubes because the opening is too small. 4 - THIS WORKED. Now don't ask me why I didn't think of this first, I feel incredibly stupid for not doing it first, but if you remove the back panel door of the fridge, you can pull out the housing. There's some electrical thing in the way but that's easily removed by removing its connectors and unscrewing it from the frame. You can then pop the tubes off, pull the housing out, stick the new one in, and reverse the procedure to get it working. Had I done #4 first, I would have been done in about 30 minutes. Instead, I wasted 3 hours replacing the part. Hopefully if you've got a similar fridge, you can learn from my mistakes and easily replace your housing.

I've read some of the questions and situations that mirror my own. I could not get new filters, I tried 3 different filters. None would go, but the one I needed to change would easily go in. Is this a design flaw. I see I am not the only one with this issue

Most common is a leak from one of the water lines. There are o rings inside that seal when you push the water line in. If the o rings go bad, you get a leak. Could also be a stuck/damaged filter in the housing or the housing some how got damaged.

Which of the connections on the housing is flow IN and which is flow OUT? I am assuming the IN connection is the 1/4 inch line?

I replaced the filter on my Kitchenaide #KSRX25F. The ice maker had stopped working as well as the water dispenser (in door). It works with NO filter installed, but I have bought two new filters, and neither will work when installed.

Our replacement filter would not fit back in....the old one came out with no prob. We took off the outside knob and just turned the filter with pliers...since the knob isn't locking the filter, will it come out? Will a new housing unit fix this problem?

nana marg I would make sure there is nothing in the filter housing preventing the filter going in. You can try wetting the o-rings on the new filter, to see it it helps them go in easier.

Are those Q/D fittings prone to leakage? They look sorta chintzey to me.

They have been used for many years now, without problems. The main thing to remember is that there is an o ring inside that seals it. It is important that the line going into it is cut off square and there are no rough edges. All you have to do is push it in till it bottoms out.

AppliancePartsPros: My issue is that when those Q/Ds are encrusted with mineralization, they become anything but quick to disconnect. In fact, they're impossible to the point where I'd have to snip the lines to free the housing unit. That seems like a design flaw to me, but maybe my case is a highly pathological one.

Lynne Lee If the water filter is being forced in it could cause problems.

Lynne Lee: More likely, you have some debris (calcium, lime, rust, etc.) trapped between your filter and the valve O-rings that's preventing a good seal (I know mine was caked with mineralization in and around those valves). You can disassemble, inspect, and clean those quick connectors first before attempting to buy a whole new filter housing assembly. Keep in mind that those valves contain multiple tiny parts that must be reassembled in the proper order and orientation. If you're game, you can save yourself $40-some.
