Very well explained, I love your way, very subtle, you are not chasing your tail and talking at the speed of sound like most of the people here, which really made me subscribe immediately. About WB, it can be troublesome, but when you see the final image after getting yourself into it, it's worth it. I am working on a music video, and I'm at the color grading moment in the process and had some tough footage. I have experience, but even so, this video helped me, because times are changing, as well as the way we see colors online or broadcasted on TV or cinema, so one must always train the eye. Thank you, and greetings from Montenegro, Europe.

Thank you very much! This is really scary to those who are new to video editing! People usually create billions of nodes to show "simple workflows" to color grade and etc. You made it simple/direct!

I just do a quicker by fixing the White balance on the iPhone before I start recording. Then it comes out perfect. Saves me a lot of time.

I have 2 questions: why is everyone placing CST LUT on second or last nodes. why not on a first one? and second Q what is PIVOT (next to contrast - i still dont get this slider) Thank you very much
@lombardy3274
@lombardy3274 11 ай бұрын
Because the LUT converts to a Rec.709 output color space and you want to grade beneath that conversion, in the larger log color space, to maximise post processing latitude. Pivot shifts the contrast curve, down to target tones below middle grey and up to target tones above middle grey.

All image adjustments must occur before transforming it into REC709, this way you work with the greatest amount of information that the LOG curve provides. The PIVOT adjustment follows the contrast adjustment, making it more or less dense, but it only "works" when you add or subtract contrast.

I get the neutral concept in white balance. But I still dont grasp what is neutral in contrast correction ? Is it IRE range? So then the clip can be more flexible when you creating look.
@ebbfriday
@ebbfriday 11 ай бұрын
Well you want to add contrast to get the correct IRE values, and saturation levels

Very good :) i think this is very essential and one of the first things you should do with your footage. However I see a lot that especially young filmmakers tend to like the "style" of the ungraded white balance often more because it gives their footage a "mood". But i think it's a very wrong approach to get mood into your scence by tinting areas that should be neutral/white. I believe a better way to achieve that is actually chaning the environment. Like in the Villneuve movie ENEMY, everything has a beige/yellow tint, which is rather achieved by set design instead of unbalanced whites.

Yes! Good point. Makes alot of sense. I guess its all about what feel you're looking for. But, Set design, lighting is always the best way to achieve mood, or feel.

the best cinematographers literally use lights with different colour temperatures to what the camera is set at. An example is shooting 4300k for interior night shots with tungsten lights. You still get the warmth of the light but it's not as intense as if you shot it at 5600k OR as white if you shot it at 3200K. just look at Roger deakin's movies for an example of this.

If youd like to Change your footage a little bit Yellowish you would either warm up your Temp slider, or go to the color bars section in Resolve Offset, and pull down the Blue Slider. I have a tutroial on getting the bladerunner look on my channel, that may help!

Not when it comes to color correction, without those steps it would be terribly difficult to increase color separation etc. mid grade.
