Did this today on a textured balustrade coffe table that had light brown stain, sanded the flat coat and applied the chalk paint it looked gorgeous until I sealed it with lacquer!! It’s bad most of the white wash effect went away and turned out very glossy, I was hassitant on using furniture was as I’ve heard it doesn’t last and they need to be resealed after 1-2 years.

You would either need to sand or strip them back to the bare wood, or you could paint them in a lighter colour.

I have a question, what if the piece was just bleach can I use shellac to spray where needed I see areas that the sanding couldn’t get out, and I don’t want a bleed through? Will the shellac be okay under the white wash technique ? What can I see it with I have a dresser so I’m thinking poly the blue can, or clear wax too I was thinking . Help help
@salvagedbykscott3 жыл бұрын
You could try a layer of shellac but a paint wash may not stick to it well. Usually you want your paint to absorb into the porous surface a little. You can seal with poly or wax 😉

Do you wash and reuse your rags or just toss them? If you wash them do you use your washing machine?
@salvagedbykscott4 жыл бұрын
If I’ve used them with paint or natural furniture waxed I just launder them like usual but if they’ve been used on oil based products or anything with solvents in them they need to be kept in a metal container until they’re disposed of at a hazardous waste site. I try not to use those type of products too often and if I do I usually use blue shop paper towels instead of my washable rags 😉

What’s your solution for when you get pieces that aren’t quite level? I noticed that console table looked a little wobbly during one shot. I tend to just put a sticky foot on the bottom of the one that isn’t level but curious if you have a more long term solution you utilize :)
@salvagedbykscott4 жыл бұрын
Hey Mel! Everyone seems to comment on wobbly pieces 🤪 mostly it’s the floor that’s sloped towards the drain. If somehow the legs were really uneven, I’d probably ask my husband to cut them down to the same length.

I love your videos! I want to try this technique. What is the difference between whitewashing and lime waxing? I see some do lime wax really heavy and I prefer the thin like you did.
@salvagedbykscott3 жыл бұрын
White washing is done with a watered down paint. It can be layered up to the desired look and sealed with anything for protection. Liming wax is a sealer in itself. It sit inside the wood grain fibres to give a lighter look. If you’re working with wood that doesn’t have deep grain to hold the wax, it rubs right off.
