Be sure to use a new circuit breaker manufactured by the same source that manufactured the breaker box. It appears that your new breaker is a Square D while the already existing breakers appear to be made by Eaton.

The panel you are working on is a sub-panel. The ground and neutral wires on are two different bars in the panel. You put both ground and neutral wires from the surge protector on the ground bar in the panel. Move the the white wire from the surge protector to the neutral bar in the panel.

Hi there, you connected both the green and white wire to the same bus bar the manual says to connect the green wire to the ground bus bar and the white wire to the neutral bus bar

You are correct, the neutral and the ground are connected to each other but the proper way to do it is to split them. I will correct it.

What Greg B said is correct but whoever installed this breaker panel originally failed to remove the tie conductor strap between the neutral & ground buss separating them.

Shouldn't the surge protection be up at the top of the panel closest to the main feed?

No, electricity doesn't stop or really start at the top of the panel, it is increasing "pressure" across the entire panel at once. I replaced a unit that was installed by a professional electrician that wired my whole home when it was built by a licensed builder.

Hi. I have a 200 amp main panel and another 200 amp sub panel next to it. Do I need 2 surge protectors or just 1 in the main panel.

My understanding is you just need the one in the main panel. I don't have one in my sub panel.

The electrician that wired my home only put one on the outside panel, so I replaced it with a better protector and moved the one they installed to the street where I have another panel. These are to protect from lightning strikes and transformers blowing up (for some reason the people around here REALLY like hitting the electrical poles, happens a few times a year). I have never heard of a surge coming from inside the house as nothing generated electricity in there. I do know that big items can draw enough power to cause issues though.

@@davetyler8214 A good number do. Mostly Induction motors spinning down after power is removed. About half of all surges originate outside the facility and half inside. A majority of these 'self install' SPD videos are problematic.to be kind. Even supposed 'Professional' installs, usually by HVAC techs. Breaker position all over the place, unnecessarily long SPD lead lengths, not twisting the wires. INCHES matter in how long the wires are. Spec is under 12". Ideally it would be the first breaker after the service entrance cable main breaker, SPD installed directly on enclosure perpendicular from the breaker, Make sure leads are absolutely as short as you can make them and braid the leads if possible. Any self inductance voltage from excessive lead length is added to the Pass Thru Voltage.

The manufacturer's instruction say to twist the wires that go to the breaker 1 twist per inch of length!!!!!!!!!!!

Note, adding the twists is fairly simple, just losen the nut and twist the whole unit the number of recommended twists for your wire length. No need to disconnect anything.
