Eaton says location doesn't matter as far as being closest to the main breaker or furthest . The device senses the surge and aids in sending to ground immediately from the buss before getting to branch breakers ... better have proper ground and correct awg for insurance. Also matching breaker to box mfg.

Epic, There are three levels of surge protection you may be interested in. I live in Florida, need I say more. Type 1 is a surge protector at the electrical meter installed by the utility company or a licensed electrician for surges that occur outside on the grid. Type 2 is dedicated to an appliance like the AC compressor, AHU, well pumps etc. There are Type 3 surge protected outlets that can be installed at the point of use like at the refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine, or anywhere you want additional surge protection. Surge protected power strip you may use at your computer or entertainment equipment is Type 3. I use a UPS with surge protection for my TV, set top box, WIFI router and speakers so that my TV does not go down on short power interruptions. Type 2 & 3 are for surges that come from inside the house. There is a lot to know about surge protection, I have been researching if for awhile now. Hope this is helpful and you don't loose any more equipment due to surges.

Best to always remove any rings silver and gold pretty good conductors pretty good burn or loss of finger can occur also I wouldn't use a drill on breaker I surfaced mounted 1900 box and nippled surge protector to that you can put either side of panel at the top put 2 pole 50 amp breaker top of panel right below main breaker. Personally i would have bought a NEMA1 6 in. x 6 in. x 4 in. box at Home depot with a 'close' chase nipple to use between the panel and the box. Making sure that the box itself sits flush with the outside of the wall which is generally 5/8"in.(marking the box to get it lined up with the sheetrock). Then use a step bit holes from the measurements from the offset of the hole from your home panel to the box itself. After getting all your measurements drawn out, you would just screw the inside of the box next to the side of the stud where your panel is located and secure the box. Next thing is to just self tap (screw) the module inside The rest you would just make extensions (Judging from the wires the provided it was a #10 awg Str. but I question it should be larger wires) all in all i think it would make it look more aesthetically pleasing. (Less dust and insulation blowing in) All under $25 at Hdepot. Other then that im not in a place to judge you on your work but i wouldnt use an impact on any breakers in the panels cause that would just blow the screws out of them. Hope You'd find other great ideas for your diy adventures!

Also, it's a code violation in most places to have anything on the wall to the sides of the panel. As much as 36". If you aren't selling your house, it may not pose a problem. But I'd take that shelf down or move it before selling if you ever do. Blocking the panel cover is a flagrant violation. Think of it this way, say something happens to your drop and they have to pull a permit to repair it. Then they have to inspect it, and that will fail you instantly. You might wanna have that fixed just in case. Unless, of course, your brother is the local inspector. /s

9:11 vs 10:11. If you look at the left edge of the breaker, it was back farther (to the left). Meaning it was not able to rock down due to binding. Before even beginning to rock it down into place, make sure the left edge hooks fully onto the pivot point. Think of it as a slight wiggling motion (no more than 1/16th") and applying slight pressure straight to the right. This fully seats the hooks so the breaker can swing down. Otherwise, you can use a 2lb hammer and beat the crap out of it. That will also get it to sit flush. I would not recommend this though. Damage to your box is likely. lol

What you should have done prior to buying the circuit breaker was read the model of the panel on the door .. to get the right breaker as in sace of fire insurance will not cover claim if you have wrong brand breaker installed. Also you could have moved all the breakers on left side up and mounted your 2 pole breaker bottom left and had no issues about length.

Good practice recommends that one should remove all jewelry before working on electrical equipment. You should get a good quality, insulated screwdriver. NEVER, NEVER use a power drill in an electrical panel. You lost some of your electronic equipment due to a power surge, you almost lost your LIFE working in the panel. There is so much wrong with what you did I recommend that you take an electrical safety course, the life you save may be your own.

Don’t pay any attention to the person who commented “Hack!!”. As a licensed master electrician there is not a lot wrong with this installation. The only things I would’ve done differently would be to move the 50 amp breaker closer to the surge protector, and make the wires feeding the surge protector as short as possible (you’re supposed to cut off any excess wire, including the ground and neutral), and technically you’re supposed to stick with the same manufacturer for load centers and breakers, i.e. Eaton breakers for an Eaton box, and Siemens breakers in a Siemens box and so on. Other than that what you did was fine. The dude who commented “Hack!!” just said that to try and get a negative response from you. Bravo for not taking the bait.

@@ETPCYT The responsible thing would have been to emphasize ,up front, your lack of expertise AND warn any potential DIY'ers about the lethal level of electricity coming into that panel even with the main breakers off. That's something that virtually ALL of the reviewers for these types of devices explicitly state. Secondly, as several commenters have noted, this device is supposed to be installed as the FIRST breaker in the box - not somewhere in the middle as you have done. That way, any power surge can be intercepted FIRST and diverted to ground rather than getting into other preceeding circuits and damaging them before the surge is diverted to ground. Aside from these critical misses on your part would be the sloppy wallboard "repair" using a floor tile? Come on - are you serious? That last is more of a cosmetic issue. The second could still result in circuit damage or failure - but the first could cost some unsuspecting DIY'er their life!.

@@ETPCYT This guy seems very capable of doing the job but to point out a few dangers First: Never wear Rings when working in an electrical panel or any electrical for that matter that gold is a very good conductor and I know a guy that lost his finger that way. Second: No need to use a drill to screw or unscrew a breaker thats also a potential unnecessary danger.Third: His panel has 7 tandem breakers and the label on the panel door shows ONLY single pole breakers allowed. Fourth: Not supposed to cut panel cover.Five: The 2 pole breaker for surge protector should be put top of panel nearest feed coming in.Easier and cheaper way buy a 1900 box with a blank cover and surface mount near top of panel on either side you will have to cut into 2x4 in wall thats on either side of panel to gain access to the knockout and also to run a small piece of armor to get into back of 1900 box using an angle connector then nipple the surge protector into the 1900 box. You would have to do this all in steps as to get the wires nicely thru the 1900 box and armor it will come out very neatly and safely if you take your time. Hope this helps Regards John retired electrician.

Reading the instructions: Under "IMPORTANT"; "To maximize the CHSP's performance, twist and bind the wires togeather to reduce the impedance of the wire (one twist / inch)". I wonder if that refers to the two hots, or all four wires? I would like to see an example of this. The issue is, if the impedance of the wires is high, then it will take more time for the device to respond to a surge.

This makes me think that if your load center is at max capacity (no room for another double pole breaker) then you cannot install this surge protector... :(

yeah, I think I had consolidate a few to make it fit.. so far no more damage from surges though :)

Nooooo sir. Wrong placement so is not good protection. Never use power drill on breaker. Uninsulated screw driver. Too many things wrong to go into the video. Please stay out of your electrical panel.

Your panel has lost its ul listing ! Its dangerous! Plus you don't have a separate grounding system, or probably not one at all !

dude.....get yourself a licensed electrician.....you are not safe and not correct....sorry, but it's the truth. The line in is live and you have wires and wrenches flying around....no good.....and can cause death under certain circumstances. You also installed in the wrong spot.

@@ETPCYT some licenced guys would have installed incorrectly too.....🤔....the key is electricity (the surge) takes the shortest route between two points. In any case, nice video.....thought provoking and exciting at the same time. ⚡

Should you be of the opinion that this video depicts properly installing this SPD you are WRONG. This is nothing less than a hack job. A little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing and coupled with inability lack of experience can be tragic. I totally agree with summarized evaluation: "HACK" BAD. This guy is not an electrician.. SHEESH!

@@ETPCYT Under the general category of planning: the any breaker ( OCPD) must be listed by the panel manufacturer as acceptable. This info is printed on panel cover door. Anything other than the exact listing violates 110.3b of NFPA70. It seems apparent that you are not familiar with NFPA70 and beginning with that deficiency you ought not try to 'instruct' others. In summary how is it that you might consider yourself as qualified to 'instruct'? The workmanship exhibited is not craftsman like, in the least it is poor. Thorough and competent planning by a knowledgeable individual would not result in your displayed product. I wish you the best in your endeavors.
@ETPCYT

The breaker is a siemens and that is what the panel has listed as the only acceptable breaker.. Other breakers in the box are not. I did not install all the other breakers... I guess the best thing would be to pull the non- siemens breakers out and replace them with the correct ones. It's true, I have never heard of the NFPA70. This video is not necessarily a guide for how to do it but for how I did it. I don't claim to be a professional nor do I claim to be qualified to instruct others in this area. Most YT videos are to be taken with a grain of salt. The reason for the sub-par craftsmanship was I was trying to hurry and finish up as I had no power and was running out of day light. I realize it may not be the prettiest job but I don't believe it is unsafe. It seems you are quite competent and knowledgeable about this craft and I do appreciate you taking time to leave these insightful comments. Be blessed my Friend :)

Actually him showing us this unedited, which was kinda funny and human, it does help a homeowner see what they'll run into. And was just showing one way of doing it. More realistic when not edited and can think ahead of what materials might need. Rather watch this than a professional trying to just sell the product n leave out possible obstacles to run into. At beginning I actually thought I was gonna see an electrocution happen and so glad I didn't. Now I'll watch a few other videos and see how they installed on theirs too. Thanks for the vid.
