What is up guys and girls!
Welcome once again to another wingfoil video. This time we will be looking at a commonly asked question, which is starting on a sinker or simply a small board.
In the video I will explain the classic knee start that is mostly used when riding with sinker boards but I will also explain the method I use as a bigger guy. Both methods are very similar but with some key differences that might just make the difference.
I hope you find what you need in this video and feel free to share it with anyone that might need to see it!
See you on the water!

Hi! I wing in a really choppy area on a board that has very little stability. I have found that if you have your back to the wind, and the nose of the board under the wing, having the wing in front of you means you can have two hands on the wing to give side to side support and with the wing in front of you means you have forward and back support as well PLUS the waves are at your back running along the length of the board which is more stable than hitting the side. When ready, fly the wing overhead, do a 90 degree spin under it at the same time (simple), stand up and go. Your first way looks like it allows for two directions of instability - side to side from the waves but with support on one side, and front to back as you have nothing really to lean on (the wing is by your side, not in front). I usually use your second way on my 35L sinker, but that needs more depth than a knee start so sometimes need to mix it up.

Hey, good to get your opinion! Just some feedback from my side. I have found, as mentioned, that the second way I show is better for me and it actually allows nearly everything you mentioned. As you see on the video I use 2 hands on the wing and can turn the board to point in any direction from that position, although turning it the same direction as the waves is unnecessary as I get plenty of stability from the wing. Generally I am very stable and can stay like that pretty much as long as I need. I also have found, while teaching a lot of people, that the part you mention of spinning 90 degrees is not as easy as it sounds for most. Especially for people without previous board sports experience or that are still pretty new to the game. However, everyone has little tips and tricks that work for them, so that you for sharing yours! I hope someone can benefit from them! Keep riding!

This is a huge help. I just had knee replacements on both knees n I can’t bend my knees very well. I tried your second method and it works on my 75ltr board 😊. A little sketchy but it works.

I am very new to wing foiling - been out 4 or so times in the last few weeks. I am not very flexible and I use your second technique on my 110 liter F-one board. Seems to work well. Happy to see the same technique can be used on smaller sized boards as well.

Great Video. Thanks for the tips. Do you find that the sinking boards are better in bigger waves than almost sinking or neutral buoyancy?

Hey sorry for the late reply! In bigger waves I actually prefer complete sinkers as they stay deep enough under the waves so its not affected. Semi sinkers that dont completely go under usually end up getting pushed around by the waves. Hope this helps

This is interesting and appears to make a lot of sense. One assumes there is at least 18 knots in such a scenario? @@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind

Well not necessarily. I know a lot of people, myself included that start complete sinkers in much less. Of course for that you have to be very efficient technically and have plenty of energy. For sure the more wind you have the easier and more enjoyable sinker boards are @@Dorothyinstead
