joe baker thank you for the kind words I really appriciate it. As for the veterans classes we have already started. We're trying to get more contractors on board for a veterans labor share portion. So the vet never is out of work. It's a slow process to get people on board to take our trainees when we slow down but don't want to take any one on that we cannot guarantee full time employment and a journeymans license after they log enough hours. We're hard at it for sure!

First let me say your video is great ! I'm a 71 year old Vietnam vet, and just finished putting a 50 amp sub panel in my garage. My Dad was an electrician all his life, and was dedicated to pounding as much about electricity he could, into my head. I wound up as a self-employed cabinetmaker instead of an electrician, but, every time I moved into a new, larger shop, I did all of my own electrical work, up to, and including 440 volt 3 phase power. Not once did I ever get a complaint from an inspector, for any of my work. ( And yes, I did have proper inspections done, otherwise I would have been unable to get the necessary insurance for the shop. ) My dad always said neatness, neatness, neatness, was of paramount importance, for ease of future troubleshooting, or modifications, and I did receive some compliments from inspectors, as my work was easy to follow. Any way, I just subscribed to your channel, and look forward to future videos. Also, What your are doing for Veterans is beyond commendable, it's fabulous ! Keep up your good work, and best of luck to you in the future !

Want to give you two thumbs up, excellent video. ? When your changing a service panel up grade. There should be a off on switch. Before the service panel. Are you required to contact the local agencies ( power co.) When you plan on doing the service. I would guess so. Of course it depends on local of up grade. Thanks for the insight. Your a natural!!!
@StarvingElectrician
@StarvingElectrician 5 жыл бұрын
well unfortunately no there is not an off switch. the only way to turn off power to chang out the panel is to remove the meter socket. it simply pligs into the meter housing. the utility company can do it for you but this takes time for on and off but most will say hire an electrician. you clip the tab and open the meter can. the meter socket just pulls right out. edison has flunkeys pulling them out all the time to block peoples power. its not hard at all. take a look and see if you feel confident to do it.

If its a neutral its a grounded conductor. A ground wire is a grounding conductor. Hots are ungrounded conductors. I've been an electrician for 30+ yrs and this guy knows what hes doing. I dont like twisting the grounds together like that though. It makes trouble shooting and repair more difficult. There are lots of lugs to land them on. Give each wire its own little lug to park in.

Tony Thomas yea I hear ya about the grounds. It’s just quick and easy and most of the old panels have no where near the space. People need to know you can but I’m the same token just do it clean first and foremost. Thank you for the comment!!

Always check the codes in your area. They are not always the same. In some areas, the ground and neutral wires can't be attached to the same strip. Grounds must be on one side of the breaker panel and neutral on the other side. In some areas, they are even regulating which side the grounds go on and which side the neutrals go on. In some areas, only one wire on one screw is allowed. In some areas, you can't twist the grounds together and put them under one screw. I personally feel like codes have gotten too strict on a lot of this stuff.
@StarvingElectrician
@StarvingElectrician 6 жыл бұрын
neutrodyne let me try and put this grounding thing to rest. The code is coast to coast. NEC so that's where we start. Ground is defined as an alternate path for current to flow. That's to protect you from being that path. The neutral bar must be bonded to the breaker box unless it's a sub panel and that panel box must be grounded and bonded. There fore the neutral bar is connected to the panel and the panel is grounded and bonded to they are connected together wether anyone likes it or not. The redundant issue of doubling grounds is as easy as this. In a box for wire filll or the amount of wires allowed for cappicity, each current carrying conductor has a value BUT no matter how many grounds you have in a box they only count as one because they carry no current. You can twist together 20 ground wires from different circuits in a plastic box and no one seems to have an issue but in a panel there's a lot of issues. Grounds can be twisted together and under the same terminal in a panel so long as they do not exceed the circular mills rated for that lug. They can share a bus with the neutrals because they are bonded together to protect that path of current. States do vary and yes check on certain things. But grounds together are a universal safety device and since electricity is the same in every state that is universal in its self. All code books are created equal so the application is to be followed the same for every one.
@72strand
@72strand 5 жыл бұрын
Im European and im sorry to say that what you do is horryfying to me. First, naked ground wires, that can make shorts? Not be allowed here. Neutral and ground on same bar? Stupid and dangerous. The most enclosures from US, does have a bonding bolt, that binds the neutral to ground. In this video there is none i guess. Grounds goes to a ground bar, that is mounted directly to the chassis. That way, you can just unscrew the bolt and make diagnostics. Never ever use blades to the wires. There are special tools that only cut 50% och the dept of the shield. Always install GFCI and ARCH fault breakers.

When opening concentric holes in panels, I use the cats paw for the center one, then clip each next section out with tin snips between the welds then bend them out. I'm in all conduit land. I like how you present your videos and your personality . I find that enjoyable. I have two more things to make comments on. 1. You put the breakers right next to each other. In mine I'm only able to use every other circuit. I don't know if that's the way the box is design or if it's something wrong with mine. Is working with a double pole for my dryer. But not for any other. 2. I do like the way you twist the ground wires together and put them all in one spot. However, I am doing remodeling and if I change something and I need to take out the wiring it will be difficult to unwind it from the rest. Additionally you put the white wires separate from where the breaker is. Again if you take out the wiring you have to try to follow where that goes to figure out which breaker it represents. I have found it easier to put the ground wire and the neutral wire for the breaker with the breaker it goes to so I know exactly where everything is and I don't have to try to figure out what ground wire or white wire goes with what breaker. That was the frustration in the Square D QO box. The neutral had its own bar and the ground wire had its own bar. The ground wires and white wires had to be way longer than the hot black wire to reach the bar they we're screwed into.
@StarvingElectrician
@StarvingElectrician 5 жыл бұрын
changouno thanks for the question. First if every other breaker works, then either the main is bad or it’s the utility company issue. As far as the neutrals and grounds, they have to be bonded together and to the panel. Then the panel is grounded to the ground rods as well as the cold water. I have seen panels that the neutrals aren’t bonded and when the washing machine was on the lights were like a strobe light. All that unbalanced load going crazy. You don’t double up the neutrals because the generate heat and will pull away from each other and cause a fire. Grounds under the same lug with neutrals aren’t allowed. I don’t have every answer but this is what I have seen and the code. I hope this helps

Entertaining video and for the most part it’s spot on. Keep in mind that ul listing for most panels only allow for up to two grounds under one terminal (the most I have ever seen was up to 3) this information can be found on the sticker they give you on grounding information. Also as far as the grounded and grounding conductors go (your explination of the main bonding jumper) is electric could give two shits less about the ground itself. It always wants to take the least resistive path back to source (your neutral) without your main bonding jumper (the green screw that officially ties the grounds and your neutrals together) the electric would simply energize your ground. The whole point is to bond it to the neutral so that if power touches anything that’s grounded it will open the ocpd (breaker). The reason we don’t use the neutral to do this is because it carries a current and that would make your enclosures carry current as well. So we avoid this by using the grounding conductor system as it does not carry a load under normal conditions. We drive this to ground with a grounding electrode system to give foreign voltage (lighting, telephone etc) a path to exit your system.
@StarvingElectrician
@StarvingElectrician 6 жыл бұрын
Daniel Korb thanks for the feed back. The terminal capacity is based on circular mills and if it's a current carrying conductor. I have never been shot down by an inspector in 30 years of doing electrical this way. The point I made to a comment was if something is illegal then recite it out of a code book and not what you think or heard. In this case there is nothing illegal about multiple grounds under a terminal. Anything over one is multiple and doesn't make a difference.

That was outstanding. Your teaching vids have helped me a ton. I want to thank you for reaching out to vets. YOU ARE A Good Man!. I have a problem. I have a Westinghouse 9500 with a 50 amp plug in feed (black green white and Red. I've got and Eaton breaker box that I intend to tie into my 4 wire 50 amp feed. Two 20 Amp breakers will feed my small shop. One will be dedicated to the Combination 115 volt window ac and heater that will heat up my shop. Second will run plug ins for drills and what ever. Nothing but 115 will be used. Very confused on this help if you can and if you can't, that's ok
@StarvingElectrician
@StarvingElectrician 3 жыл бұрын
thank you brother. so long as you dont exceed the total 50 amps you will be good. divide 9500 by 220 that will give you the load or what the generator can handle. you are good for 43 amps.

Best video on KZbin. Only thing I wish you went into was where to install your ground to the panel for a service entrance panel. I'm assuming you just install it on the neutral bar, because for service entrance, ground/neutrals are tied together, but my ground wire looks kind of big. I'll try to compress the wire like you showed best I can and make it fit. Might be cool to get into which panels you like the best. I got a Square D 100a Homeline with Plug On Neutrals. Wish I stepped up to one with copper bus bars/qwik grip. I only saw qwik grip for 200a panels, and I'm assuming I could use it for my 100a panel without issues, but you live and learn.
@StarvingElectrician
@StarvingElectrician 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I like the homeline best. cheap breakers and the most common. as far as the big wire you can buy a lug from home depot that attaches to the ground bar its like forked so it fits under two screws on the buss bar and then you just put the wire in that. its self explanitory. when you see it.

Very entertaining! Bonus is your video is also entertaining. You don’t talk down to the viewer, your instruction are clear. Thank you. You used the deox on the incoming power wires, but not on the neutral or hot wires of your branch circuit wires. Why? Also... there is a cost difference between 10/2 and 12/2 wire, and 20 amp circuits cannot manage on 15 amp wire (I understand why), but could a person use 12/2 on 15 amp breakers safely?

I just bought a house. Garage is kinda a mess with wires all over but they are all dead. It already has a rigged up box and light switch and sockets but only garage door works. Seems pretty straight forward once box is in. Cut power to gargae from house. Run wires from sockets and stuff to box. Just make sure wire is right gauges. Box has main shut off switch at top and then maybe 6 different ports with room for more. I need to tear down the ply wood and fix some mold issues with it.
