Well done Ariel, yes that's correct. I also tell my students that a thesis statement is the anchor for all their topic sentences and that often their topic sentences must evolve from their thesis statement and must all tie back to it. I really like the compass analogy too ;)

As I got into my final years of uni I started structuring my thesis statements as "if...then...because" statements (before trimming them down in edits to be less wordy/more concise). It's not a perfect science but it was always easy for working out the core of my idea before trimming it down, I always found thesis statements the hardest part of any paper

I came here to say thank you. After this weird year that 2020 has become, I am going back to school at 25 after not being in an English class for 8 years. I do not remember how to cite or format in MLA, how to make a thesis statement, or properly structure an essay. This coupled with all of my classes being an online format (no lectures, just assignments, discussion posts, ect) have made it extremely difficult to learn and get back on track. Excellent and was more important then I imagined and really is the glue to the entire process, like the first stone placement for a magnificant castle! 5-minute video and I feel so much more confident about doing well in my Anthropology class now! - a thesis statement is a short statement, usually one sentence, that summarizes the main point or claim of an essay.. and is developed, supported and explained in the text by means of examples and evidence. - typically it should be at the end of ur introduction. u don't haaave to put it there, but 99% of the time that's where u want it to be. - think of it as your compass. imagine ur stuck in a forest (ur essay). ur thesis statement should guide you through ur essay, the same way a compass can guide you through a forest. - thesis statements should be an argument, not a fact. smtg that you're trying to prove or debate about. - make sure that what ur arguing abt in ur content paragraphs relate to ur thesis statement. - thesis statements can evolve! u can change it throughout ur writing process.
