You're half right on the finger-tapping thing. During the trip of the emperor to the country, the emperor went to a restaurant/yum cha alike place with his servants, and he saw people pouring tea for others. He found it interesting and he did the same to others (ie his servants). His servants freaked out and wanted to do the bow thing but couldn't cos the emperor wanted to stay anonymous, so instead of doing the whole bow thing on the floor, they did it with their fingers to show their respect/thanks to the emperor. It's supposed to be bending fingers like kneeling down, but as time passes, nowadays people just tap with fingers rather than bending fingers.

Interesting! I have always wondered why an Emperor would pour tea for others which without this addition detail would make this story implausible ;)

im open to trying anything, though havent had any good tripe as of yet. last time i had it was at japanese bbq so probably my own fault since we all had a bit to drink so probably didnt cook it right. but also had tripe in pho and such and its always unpleasantly chewy without any real flavour to speak of. liver and kidneys are my jam.

Hi Janice, I'm new to your channel. I was brought here because of a card game 'Yum Cha' that I bought a couple of weeks ago, and after the tutorial to the mahjong themed card game, your video came up. I'm now hooked, and watching your videos. A couple of years back, I was invited to a restaurant serving vegan yum cha here in Sydney, with a group of 19, for the mid-Autumn Festival. I was overly impressed with the presentation, taste and value of the food. In total we spent roughly $40pp, and I left a generous tip after. I can't wait to see your next video 😊

thank you so much! I am now super curious about this yum cha card game you're talking about haha

Your explanation of tapping 2 fingers as a symbol of bowing and thanking the person for pouring your tea is the same story as told to me by a professor at a Chinese university where I taught English 10 years ago. But the 2 fingers should be bent at the first knuckle and tapping should be done on the those knuckles to accentuate the bowing action. Loved your simple explanations and very tempting selection of the dishes.

You always talk about "My Sister". We have seen her so often in December, it would be really nice to know her name. She looks like a good sister and a lot of fun. Oh, and I always leave the chickens' feet for my son and daughter-in-law. I'm adventurous but there are some things I don't want to try.

My favorite vlog for now. Yumcha was excellent. You handled the chicken feet like a real master 師父Janice. The emperor must have been a Manchu. Guangzhou was the center of anti-Ching resistance in China...反清复明. Vlogs great keep it up. Thanks!

The chicken fingers are next level. I am not there yet! Too intimidating! I like tripes but I prefer another part of the intestine. The one you ate is not for everybody in my opinion. Overall, I love this kind of food. You sister looks like she is a member of the secret services 0:43 😎

I was told the tea thing is so you don’t have to pause your talking and/or eating, simply acknowledging the pourer with a tap.

Hi Janice, great video, all those dishes are also my go to dishes when at yum cha 😍 , parking is a pain in the city so never been to Palace but I’ve heard it’s good, you should try Royal Treasure in Burwood, standard is pretty similar 😀
@gerardy75002 жыл бұрын
They do have a parking at Piccadilly building where the Yum Cha place is. I think you get free parking for dining there. Unsure if this arrangement is still in place. But you are right, I hate driving in that part of the city as there is many one way street and traffic at snail pace. It's a shame that they got rid of the monorail.
@stevey70592 жыл бұрын
I know Sydney have much better dim sums than Melbourne, they're much more like Hong Kong standard. Also it's rip off here that each dish only got 3 pieces instead of 4 like yours in Sydney. And almost every dim sum is charged at large or superior price. You can't fill up your stomach without paying $50 each, so Yum Cha here is considered as luxuary dinning sadly when this is something everyone can afford in Hong Kong that I used to go twice in a week back there but now once in a month here. That's why I went to China Bar the other day where you have yum cha all you can eat for one price.
@yourenodaisy23912 жыл бұрын
So the person who pour tea is respected as an emperor, but if you have any decency the son or sometimes the youngest will pour tea for his grandparents, in-law, parents, wife or girlfriend then the guests and then to himself last.
