I spent 15 years working with probably hundreds of actors and voiceover artists making radio ads for a living. I love working with actors anyway as they're often fascinating characters when out of character and some of the friendliest people I've ever met. I had the pleasure - no, joy - of working with Tom on 3 occasions. He's one of the funniest, warmest people I met during that decade and a half, but your grammar has to be impeccable!

Tom may have not been The Doctor when I was a kid (I grew up on Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy) but he is my Doctor, my favourite Doctor. What I love about Tom Baker describing his time as Dr Who is that he doesn't shy away from saying "I craved the attention" or "I did it for myself". As much as I enjoy Doctors #1-#3, I really feel like Tom Baker essentially set the mold for all subsequent Doctors (Davison being the exception, which makes sense since it was probably a good idea to get someone really different immediately after Baker's 7-year reign). It's really with #4 you see all the pieces of what we think of the Doctor really come together finally: That weird mixture of Holmesian genius and arrogance with unashamed silliness, self-righteous anger at intergalactic injustice, and thumb-nosing at the powerful, all wrapped up in a delightful bag of eccentric dress and mannerisms. I like the NuWho acotrs, but Baker is always going to be the best for me.

I've often wondered if his very distinctive voice was partially a side-effect of re-learning how to speak. He must have had a working class Scouse accent when he was a lad, and then trained himself later to speak RP. But, like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, there are still the inflections of the original accent he had, which lends it a more interesting timbre than most actors whose natural accent is southern RP.
