If Taiwan move and produces their "higher value" chips in US, Taiwan will lose their leverage over US. What's stopping US to forego their security umbrella for Taiwan if those chips and its production is safe in US soil? Current geopolitical climate and US' domestic politics leaned more to protectionism and isolationist. If you have nothing to offer, US will have no interest to lift their finger for you.

This is all under the presumption that the US can't produce theses chips already due to some manufacturing process that isn't known, which really isn't the case, and aren't just because of the unique workforce situation in the Asia pacific with different levels of manufacturing levels in close proximity.

Great show! So, chips made in the USA, EU and Japan are not up to the technology that will be held back in Taiwan. I compare it to how the USA does not sell the F22 to any country. It is too good to share, even with friends. TSMC should continue to protect its research and highest production by keeping it native. There is no way that the US can do the 3nm in Arizona. They will be lucky of they can make the 4nm. Perhaps Taiwan needs to pay their engineers and researchers much higher salaries, subsidies to create a nationalized relationship with TSMC. Confidence towards Intel has recently declined, leading to them to get a lower amount of their US Chips Act budget allotted to them.

Inaccurate. It was U.S. Sanctions on the Republic of South Africa that forced all U.S. manufacturers of electronics to move overseas, because the U.S. banned importation of the elements that were solely sourced in the R.S.A. The P.R.C. then bought the mines in the R.S.A., and moved refining to the P.R.C., and invited those companies to move their factories there. T.S.M.C. grew up around that, as its Taiwan location gave access to the materials the P.R.C. could provide, as the leaders of the P.R.C. moved to improve relations; while its location made it acceptable as a source to the defense industries and their suppliers.

The majority of refined raw materials for building modern chips comes from China. So this game wont end well for nations that depend on supply of essential elements for chip production. TSMC is supplying chips to China even NVidia are there is too much on the line for these companies too walk away from those markets. Look at ASML earnings obviously any compensation the US promised ASML didn't help cover deficits of leaving Chinese market.

Nor did the studio experts deal with the obvious economic hardship in Taiwan that will inevitably come from increasing foreign competition and TSMC being forced to produce overseas. The United States is not Taiwan's genuine friend but it's exploiter, forcing it to hand over its competitive advantage.

Right, how u mention in your other comment, they should invest in a current hostile country? Sure the USA is no true friend, but looking at Hong Kong right now.... Or would you rather keep it all national? Otherwise you can think of it as insurance. If China ever does take over the country, chances are the company will be state owned. Also oversupply? Not that long ago there were severe shortages, that problem still isn't really fixed. As mentioned TSMC is one of the few that produce the worlds best around 80% of it???

It appears that the United States regards TSMC as a company that warrants protection, and extends this perspective to encompass Taiwan as a whole. Trump may want certain changes to past deals or new ones but most of all I think Trump will want TSMC to protect advanced tech from getting into CCP hands. That is the Biggest risk in my opinion. If China were to get the most advanced TSMC chip technology if would put all of Taiwan in danger.

Wrong they arent only ahead with 4nm, theyre ahead with 3nm as well. Theyre the only foundry producing 3nm at high enough yields. Main reason why intel and Samsung had to cut orders from ASML because no one is ordering from them. Intel and Samsung arent catching up their foundry business is a massive clusterfuck and their boards are inept. A Semiconductor company having to split their R&D on design/foundry cant compete with a company thats solely focused on foundry and a company solely focused on design. TSM also has the added benefit of not competing with their own customers, don't need to give your IP to a competitor to make your chips. The main reason they do leading edge in Taiwan is because all their R&D is in Taiwan and its much cheaper than doing it in the US. Theyll move 3nm to the US fabs when they start mass producing 2nm pretty simple.

Excellent program. One comment…If Trump interferes too much with TMS, its Japanese fabs will outproduce US both in terms of quality and yield. If Japanese teams get good leadership, their group mentality become focused and tenacious. Their semi leadership lost the way during the last 2-30 years. TSM will provide that leadership. Once the direction is set the government, universities, institutions all along the chain work together. We have seen exceptional breakthroughs from outside the box innovators there as well. Also there is a deep mutual warm respect and relationship between Taiwan and Japan. At least 50-50 chance Japan will out perform the US. President Trump has been badly advised in this domain. Scattering subsidies instead of concentrating is a mistake. Let’s see if he is able to get better advice. Otherwise Japan will outstrip US.

TSMC is building a chip fab in Arizona. Intel is building 3 new fabs one in New Mexico, Oregon, and Ohio. All 4 will be able to manufacture the most advanced chips in the world. The the 2nm chips are the most advanced on the planet and will be for some time. Or maybe it’s the 3 nm chips. It’s one of those. China has the technology to build 10 nm chips. Intel before these chip fabs could build 6 nm chips while TSMC and Samsung were the only ones in the world who could build the 3 nm. That’s about to change. Intel has got their mojo back. They are about to remind everyone that it was they who invented the first mixrochip. But IBM but Intel. The infamous Moore law yea Moore worked for Intel. In the next 10 years Intel will invent a revolutionary microprocessor that will change the world. China is 10 years behind us. Oh and there is only 1 company on this planet who makes the machinery to produce such tiny powerful chips. I forgot its name but it is located on the Netherlands. IE they are allies of the USA and the free world. They will not sell China the equipment. Apple used to outsource its chip manufacturing to IBM and then Intel until about 2020 now TSMV makes the new M chips. Them and the new Qualcomm chips and the brand new intels and AMDs are all bad ass. The Apple chips are the most advanced though because they are just as powerful as the others and a still consume 40-50% less power than the other ones. These SOCs are crazy advanced. In a few years Intel is going to come out with a chip with a completly new and original architecture. Not an X86 or an Arm based chip. Right now every device you have is one or the other.
