As much as I hate to, I do quite like the Ford Fiesta ST, even the new downsized 3-pot. But, in the quest for improved economy, have Ford reduced the car's tuning potential?
Apparently, no.

Excellent interesting stuff indeed.I've had my 2018 ST3 (with performance pack and all the options I think) for nearly 3 weeks only but am really enjoying it so far..Living on the west coast of Norway I have absolutely no gripes about the heated windscreen (or steering wheel). Regarding the much touted huge increases in torque available from remapping I am sure it is very grin inducing out on the road but I would wonder about the long term survivability of the drivetrain ..a serious question on my part would be 'are people just gleeful to get those figures up or do they also do research into the design limitations of the components which have to get all of that onto the road?' Or indeed the same question for the engine itself? I suppose my advanced years and and some negative experiences with tuned engines without considering this stuff in my younger years force me to look a little farther than big figures. Anyhow I will reassess the situation only when my warranty is finished.

Hey James, How did you find the seat? I haven't driven one of these as when I sat in it in the showroom I couldn't get comfortable in the seat. I'm not a big guy but my shoulders wouldn't fit in properly between the upper bolsters. Never thought about the LSD in track mode....you can turn ESC on in track mode - anybody know if torque vectoring would still be off?
@Mr.Marbles
@Mr.Marbles 3 жыл бұрын
Actually trackmode does not turn off esc completely. it puts it in sports mode. You can hold the esc button and then it turns off completely, which works in every drivemode. So drivemode and esc can be set seperately. When i turned it off i noticed the car has the tendency to understeer a bit more on corner entry tho, so the torque vectoring actually makes handling sharper even with the lsd. Havent had it on track yet but this is what it felt like to me.

You make some good points James, but I believe you're missing something of you think these appear mainly to young petrolheads. I'm knocking on for 40 and but the mk7 ST I've had for 3 years still ticks all my boxes as an everyday driver. Sure, the fast Ford image isn't for everyone, but a "petrolhead" who overlooks the ST purely based on that needs a credibility check.

Ford refused to have Mountune's stage 1 warranty friendly on this. Despite only going to 225bhp. With the success the warranty friendly tune had on the mk7, that sets the alarm bells ringing for the 3 pot. I loved the mk8 on a test drive, but with the ford dealer unable to tell me why they wont warranty the mountune 225 kit, I walked away and kept my mk7 ST.

@keirbourne5323 3 жыл бұрын
The 2.3 ecoboost in the RS and the 1.6 / 1.5 in the Fiesta STs are different. The Fiesta engines have never suffered similar issues to the RS ones. The ST180 1.6 ecoboost in particular is one of the best engines Ford have ever made. Serious serious reliability. People are doing all sorts of things with these engines - track use, race use, drag racing, daily driving on huge 400bhp power - and the engines just don't go wrong. A lot of other parts go wrong but the engines are rock solid.

Look at the dyno printouts in the video, the yellow line is the torque. You can see at about 2.3k revs (I think) its double or thereabouts. Its hugely noticeable and pulls from really low down. The stage 1 Fiesta, because it's brand new rather than nearly 15 years old. It's a better car suited for the UK's roads and cities. It would run rings around an old Holden. That typical B road he's driving down right now, a 500 horsepower Monaro wouldn't be as fast as that Fiesta. It would be lying upside down in the ditch after the second corner.

I was going to pick one up until I found that the ST3 was a ridiculous price (7k more than my Mk7...), didn't have adaptive cruise as an option when the ST line can... Oh, and I picked up a Golf R for 5k less. Sorry, but this Fiesta is way too expensive for a small hatch, I'd rather go the class above for that kind of price.

Sounds great but personally, I really don't get the obsession with torque and hot hatches. More torque equals fewer revs and wheres the run in that? A hot hatch should be a pleasure to rev, you should want to rev it until the valves bounce on the bonnet and then change gear.

Mate these are not as tunable. I have a mark 7 with 370bhp and these new 1.5 engines are yet to crack the 300bhp mark. They are great with a stage 1 and stage 2 map. But they have limitations that the tuning company's at the moment can't get past. But there are great for about 280 290 bhp. Did yo prefer the m8 over the mk7 ?

@@HillJamie17 there still not as tunable as the mk7s mate. Why would the lads at puma speed remove the 3 cylinder and pop in the 4 cylinder from the mk7. Spoke to the lads at puma speed yes u still get great gains from that engine but its not as tunable as the mk7. Hopefully further down the line with more development it is but at the moment it is not

@@greggsmith5391 oh don’t worry I know the MK7’s are more tuneable. I was just saying that Pumaspeed have a 300BHP MK8 with the 3 cylinder engine. Not sure if they still have that or like you said put the 4 pot in for more power. If it were me pushing for power I would choose the MK7 engine. I wouldn’t want the MK8 at 300bhp I think that’s too much for a 3 cylinder in the long run

Yeh I’ll be honest that is true to and extent but the mk7 is more likely to blow up compared to a remapped mk8. Correct me if I’m wrong tho I’m still learning

@@chirpywiggins5796 the car’s torque i think is enough, I just wish they had some more top end power especially in the PE’s and the ST Edition. The Mountune map looks the best option for mapping, the torque isn’t crazy and the power delivery is linear.

@@chirpywiggins5796 this particular car is now almost 3 years old and a touch over 20k miles has had an updated version of the map and has been dynoed at 253hp/394 N/m and it's been faultless. Of course theres a risk modifying a car in warranty but that's a choice people make. Can people please stop using the phrases 'Stage 1' 'Stage 2' etc etc etc. They literally have no meaning at all because each car is unique and has to be set up differently to any other car. Also, the people whom do the tuning also differ greatly from one and other so a 'stage 1' at one garage could be the equivalent of a 'stage 2' at another garage. Using these terms makes you sound like a twat and makes you sound like you have absolutely no idea what's actually been done to your car lol.
