Can Twitter be saved? In a wide-ranging conversation with TED's Chris Anderson and Whitney Pennington Rodgers, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey discusses the future of the platform -- acknowledging problems with harassment and moderation and proposing some fundamental changes that he hopes will encourage healthy, respectful conversations. "Are we actually delivering something that people value every single day?" Dorsey asks.

@@erica8332 you don't really seem to know what you are talking about... Sure, you have a right to say or write what you like and you even have a right to publish it. However that does not mean that twitter doesn't have the right to ban you or silence you on their own platform. That is not a violation of the 1st amendment, they aren't coming to your house and forcing your mouth shut. They are just banning you from their website. And they have all the right to do that if they want. Even if they are publicly traded. If you don't want them to be able to do that, don't invest in them and stop using their platform and hope that it collapses eventually. But don't be so stupid as to think they are not able to control what is said on their platform, because they have a total legal right to do this and it doesn't affect your 1st amendment rights at all.

you don't understand the difference between publisher and platform. Platforms can regulate speech but it has to uphold a uniform and impartial standard only publishers can be biased. In the Joe Rogan podcast journalist Tim pool exposed how horrible and biased Jack Dorsey is, he gave countless examples of Democrats reportedly violating Twitter guide such as threatening 15-year-old boy life, etc. Yet there no action has been taken by Twitter despite the fact US law 🚨 was broken by that tweet. To contrary when conservative journalist used the #learntocode he was banned immediately Such partially in judgment is violation regulations that make twitter platform, since they behave like a publisher they must regulate as publisher i.e they will liable for everything their users publish (already amendments have been formulated to clause thos loophole ). Unfortunately due to covid, this has been put on halt This is why Mark Zuckerberg move to an AI system of regulation to avoid human biases and prevent Facebook from being regulated

Unfortunately facebook is just as bad and it's character limit is sky high, it's more space to be filled with pseudoscience, dangerous platitudes, racism etc. at the end of the day. The issue is that Twitter, Facebook and KZbin can't be held liable...can't be sued for content. These three actually got this protection from congress. Now, they have decided to censor based on ideological positions, along with so called harassment. Now that they are not maintaining a neutral position, they should no longer have this civil liability exemption, which is worth billions of dollars. To wrap your head around this, AT&T provides a long distance service, should they be held liable for any conversation on their platform; reasonably, no, because they don't police the conversation. Now that KZbin, Twitter and Facebook have decided to be the corporate moral arbitrators, they are no longer offering a neutral service and yes, they are abusing censorship powers. I do not want to see corporate shills dictating what is moral or not. If a law is broken by a poster on these platforms, let the police track them down, and prosecute them. Blocking or removing content that is illegal is the same as tampering with evidence. If the legal authority ask to block the content because it is the subject of an investigation, then fine. The best defense to bad ideas are better ideas, not censorship. Edit: I believe Google was also include in that legislation.

Twitter cannot be what Jack wants it to be because of what it already is. I fear this too however if they execute the ideas and the 4 signals of a healthy conversation specifically, it should all be good. He specifically stated it won't ban wildly wrong theories like flat earth or antivax, and it appears to me they won't even really touch minor forms of bigotry as long as they keep it within their own closed off community, meaning they won't act hatefully towards any individual. Thinking this will be as much of a utopia as he makes it out to be is probably a little naive however, but quite honestly with the amount of hate going on in its current state, it can't get much worse

I m not sure Chris Anderson understands the complexity of the situation and working with collective minds. Basically this people want us to live on digital Valium. You need diversity and Jack Dorsey had some good points on how to measure that. If you decide to add fuel to the fire don't blame it on the platform...blame it on your behavior. Plus why is he questioning the revenue, it's a company , that's self explanatory. It's simple, if you don't want to be part of a conversation, don't. If it's hateful talk, report it...and stop blaming and pointing fingers. The platform is not the problem, it's humanity behavior. If you want to fix something, fix it in education and the rest will fallow.

Neither you nor anyone else has the right to decide whether a private person or entity is complying with a particular view of what constitutes free speech. The Supreme Court has held that private entities can act on the basis of their First Amendment rights (in the context of freedom of religion). If you don’t agree with Twitter’s decisions about what speech is consistent with their business model and ethical principles, you have the freedom to choose not to use it.

At some point, we have to agree that humans are very aggressive online, in contrast to offline, and no amount of human reviewers and AI learning can overcome that. Twitter is, in part, a giant mirror of human nature and no technology is going to be able to transform Twitter and other networks to be friendly and pleasant when you log in. Jack can try and minimize it but, in most cases, people will not behave at their best when discussing the biggest, most important and controversial topics.

They all need to change to protect people , age restrictions and reporting made easier and clearer there’s no transparency. Instagram do what they like and allow material that’s so unsuitable for kids under 16. Yes there should be a impenetrable system protecting under 16’s from being exposed to them or being allowed to join at all until over 16. Bullying is out of control as no one is accountable to anyone. Most moderators/admin enjoy watching people being bullied and only jump in when it’s a celebrity or one of their own friends/family are the victims. It’s a mine field for abuse of all sorts that needs to be monitored. Having a different opinion isn’t a crime, threatening and verbally and mentally abusing people is.

These are complex issues where quality and care has to be prioritized over schedule and delivery. It’s about doing it right, not doing it as quickly as possible.
