Indonesia and Vietnam are among countries that gained independence by sweat and blood against countries with superior military strength. We didn't get our freedom on a plate, we earned it, and lessons learned. I don't think modern-day's open war with Indonesia or Vietnam is viable for any country.

Murderous Vietnamese Commie regime even had a thug murdered Christian pastor Giuse Trần Ngọc Thanh, like it has done with many other pastors across the nation. There is a reason why the current Commie Vietnam ranks at the bottom of the world in freedom of speech, (true) freedom of religion, and freedom of the press, barely above Commie China and Commie North Korea. Search "cuop dat dan" (meaning "land-robbing of citizens") to see millions of footages across the country from North to South, spanning for decades, dated back to Ho Chi Minh's bloody land reform 1953-1956 that killed nearly 1 million North Vietnamese in only 4 years, or 250K people brutally slaughtered in torturous painful deaths (like being shot, stabbed, mutilated while being alive, or heads being plowed over by water buffaloes while bodies being buried underground) each year on average to rob their lands and homes. Even today, if the rightful owners refuse to have their homes or lands robbed, the ruthless Vietnamese Commie terrorist regime simply jail or massacre them, have tractors run over their bodies or openly assassinate them in their own homes. In my opinion, If Indonesia will become superpower and leads the ASEAN, as well as maintaining its current geopolitical position as mediator between the current superpower USA and the rising superpower China, all asean had a chance to lessen the tension between this two nations. If war would broke out, all Asean will become a war zone between this two powers that is not beneficial for all southeast asian nations. Indonesia through its size, population,resources and diverse culture. It has a potential to lead ASEAN alongside Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Philippines and becoming a strong world force. Being smaller was not only a matter of nutrition but an adaptation to our environment. If we were huge, all the versatilities of survival (camouflaging, climbing, swimming, agility, quickness, reflex/coordination, flexibility, dexterity, low maintenance from just basic sustenance, moving freely in and out so on and so forth) and living in underground tunnels would be more difficult. If you're too big, strength will be traded in at the expense of all those aforementioned attributes. You'll essentially be a walking painted target easy to pick a part. If you're too big, slow, and uncoordinated, you'll easily be spotted by jungle predators etc. So there are trade-offs. Being big in the real world in real time under various settings, climate, and terrain isn't always a good thing as being small isn't always a bad thing. They both have their time and place and their adaptive abilities, advantages and disadvantages. There is a reason why dinosaurs went extinct during the great meteor earlier on in Earth's history but small critters and creatures survived.

You are right on that. Now that RU invaded Ukraine, everyone in this region are already more aware of the Chinese of the real Chinese intentions. And Vietnam have been already attacked by China as late as a979, and was able to hold its own. Vietnam appears to be the most balanced nation in the Region. It did not like the French, nor the Americans, nor the Khmer Rouge. Vietnam appears to be really trying to be as humanitarian as possible, within the circumstances.

As Indonesian I can speak about my country's case. We already increased defense budget even before covid. This was measure to counter frequent territory violations by Chinese fishing ships and coast guards also to consolidate Mr. Prabowo, President Jokowi's rival in 2019 election, in the cabinet as Ministry of Defense. Vietnamese here. Yes, we tried to be neutral to everyone in the area, thus having peaceful relations with both China and US are beneficial to us. But there is a proverb: Si vis pacem, para bellum. 'It's basically, "If you want peace, then [prepare for] war". We will never accept ultimatums from any country, whether it's from Beijing or Washington D.C. While Vietnam doesn't trust China very much, my country still has a lot of hidden diplomatic channels and sometimes cooperates with an issue such as curbing human and drug trafficking like any country do. Vietnamese industry is heavily reliant on China: we relied on Chinese textiles, pig iron, chemical, etc. China indirectly employs millions of our farmers due to their gigantic domestic demand for rice, fruits, and coffee. In addition, the US still conducting destabilization campaigns by funding NGOs that promote idiotic anti-Chinese opinions. To be wary of China is good - to reject anything from China like a fanatic is retarded.

Vietnam has a long history (1000+ years) war with China, and they will fight to the last person, the jungles, rivers, wet weather, mosquitoes, rough environment are probably hardest part for any invaders. Philippine on the other hand are peaceful country and people live on island that is not direct border with any bully neighbor, therefore the people are not warmongers and less worry about getting invade by bad neighbor. Now things are changing, bad and bully neighbor has better Navy, Air Force, and weapons that can strike from a far, thus the island is no longer safe and that pushing Phillipine to defense itself. Best tactic is to have submarines and lots of anti-ship and anti-aircraft weapons, that will keep enemy at bay or think twice before invading the island. Very similar to Taiwan is doing, they bought jet fighters, anti-ship, anti-aircraft weapons, submarines, destroyers, etc. that hesitate China. Anyway, if those countries around China like Japan, Vietnam, South Korea, Taiwan, Philippine, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, India, etc. are united and sign up treaty like NATO. That will make China think twice before decide to invade any of them.

IIRC, Ho Chi Minh himself thought that enforcing straight ideological Communism was stupid (as was being shown by Mao's China across the border) and that Viet Nam needed to take capitalist measures to develop a stable economic base -- he realized the Deng Xiaoping version of China before China itself did. At the time, it was a genuine threat that the communist world might be monolithic. After all, thats what Russia seemed to do alot when a country came under a communist revolution, and subsequent integration into the soviet union. America was scared that Vietnam was gonna go towards a similar state, which is why they tried to prop up a democratic government in order to fight back. Ho Chih Minh ended up hating the chinese even more though, so Americas intervention was litterally useless in every regard. From what I've read lately the thing that separates Vietnam from every other country is the fact that they are diplomatically open but they are also a nation with strong individuality in both culture and economy, with Vietnam being one of the greatest economies in annual growth. On top of that Vietnam has the independence power to have a diplomatic affair with India, Japan, U.S. , Australia, Korea and even slightly Europe but without allowing them to influence their inner politics nor their military power. And the war WAS wrong, Vietnam was just trying to get free from France, but France asked the US to help and the Americans only did so because they didn't want Communist influence from China or Russia to come into the region. US forces left mainly because the Americans saw that Vietnam was just like them, wanting to be free from France like the US wanted to be free from the British. And it was fine, as when the US left China got greedy and attacked Vietnam multiple times, and Vietnam became the biggest enemy of China and defeated them. You have to drop down the gauntlet. And challenge an US Ally or endanger US interests. To get targeted by China. All you have to do is be there neighbor. And have islands, or shipping lanes that they want. Then China starts building artifical island military bases right outside your contry. And seizing any island you can't protect. Also they'll send hug fleets of armed fisherman to steal fish from your territorial waters. And if you try to stop them, then the chinese navy will show up to back up the poor chinese fishermen.

Indonesia suck on maintaining weapons. No matter how old are they. Cause they bought too many variable weapons from many different countries and the quantity are not many. They can't maintain their military for long like this.

It would be pointless to try to break the people in Southeast Asia spirit. From my personal experience working in Shipyard Indonesians and Filipinos those guys are always ready for a fight don't get on the bad side but apart from that are cool people..

Being cambodian, I think it's safe to say Southeast Asian countries are weary of china and have been trying to strengthen themselves independently, economically, militarily and geopolitically. Part of which has been due to the past century of Japan's conquest during WWII and Communist takeovers. The people of this region have been through a lot and won't take no for an answer. The same cannot be said about various leaders of this region
