Hi John, we recommend +/- 1,500 watts. If you're in a coastal area or similar without the extremes of hot and cold, you can get by with a bit less. Why 1,500 watts when the unit can and usually does run at 1,000 watts or less? First, the panel rating is based on 77 ° and 1,000 watts/sq. meter irradiance. But of course these perfect conditions usually don't exist, so you need a little bit more solar to make up for this. Also, the air conditioner's compressor needs more power and the summer, too. Finally, with a bit extra panel capacity, you are able to run a little bit earlier in the morning and a little bit later in the day off of just solar.
