My Mom kept me and my 7 siblings clothed with hand me downs, she sewed our dresses and also would buy at garage sales and goodwill, sewed patches on the torn jeans, and sewed the tares in our girl's dresses. I have 5 brother's and 2 sister's, I am so glad that I grew up living frugal. We lived out of our garden in the summer months and out of our food cellar and freezer in the winter months. Also shopped bent n dent. So helpful now that I am married. You guys are truly giving your Children one of the greatest gifts that they could ever receive. Your KZbin Channel is my favorite channel to watch because you Don't talk about the news, or make all the fancy foods or redecorate your home to show off on social media. I agree. Considering the state of the world I'd love to hear the argument AGAINST how this lovely family is living. I'm a spiritual person, not religious by definition and to be honest I'm not even sure what their religion is to be honest. I just see a really happy, beautiful family living a life that is good. Period. I guess the other side would have to argue why their way of life is better. By what metric is living in a big city, with chemical food, no family dinners etc. better? I see EXACTLY what God or who/whatever put us here intended in these videos. I thank you guys so much for sharing so a personal thing.

Carrie I grew up in a family of eight. My mom made all of our clothes including our underwear. She taught all four of us girls to sew and since we lived in the 50s we also wore hand me downs and wore our clothes until they were rags. The wool garments were cut up and used in quilts. I think you are amazing. May our precious Jesus bless you and your family

When I had five children at home and was a single mom. Money was tight.. we shopped at thrift stores and never turned down others gifts... I would take some of the clothing and remake them into things we needed and that would fit.. to this day even after the children are grown and have families of their own I still shop thrift stores and second hand shops. I ahve been blessed to marry again and my husband is one amazing man and see the advantage in buying second hand..

Another great option is Clothing Pantries! People.donate their clothes (like Goodwill) only you can shop for free. I donate the ones we out grow and pick out new ones. Shop thrift stores for sheets or over sized clothes (dresses, XXXL men's shirts, etc) to use as fabric. It is usually cheaper than buying new fabric.

I purchased dresses from your Amazon list for the two little girls, bought art supplies for Ester Pie, and head scarves for Carrie. I sent $50 to the two older boys. And, not a thank you for any of it and never saw the girls or Carrie wear any of it. And have yet to see art paintings from the supplies. It would have been nice to see the dresses worn since they were very expensive, the supplies equaled in value of the dresses. the boys got the same amount. Oh well, no good deed. E. Interesting vlog, Carrie. When I was a child in the fifties, I had three sets of clothes, apart from schooluniform. One set was for church and best, one for every day, and one for playing out. When I got older, I made my own clothes, apart from coats, jackets and underwear. I rarely buy clothes nowadays, and visited second hand shops before covid and cancer. Best wishes, Susan.

I have learned a lot from both of them, how to live frugally. I am in my early sixties and still follow their example. I also grow some of our vegetables and fruit trees like lemons, limes, kumquats. we had avocado, bananas and papaya but the monkeys destroyed the trees, so I have planted what they don't like. Peasant skirts are great because you can use several differnt pieces of fabric to form the layers. The layers can even be pieced with differnt pieces of fabric in a patchwork fashion. It's a great way to use up a lot of leftover pieces of fabric. You can incorporate the good pieces of fabric (generally the backs of the legs of jeans) from worn out clothing to make patchwork layers for skirts.

This money goes towards new shoes etc for my daughter. I mend clothes to keep them going or use wonder web which is fab! I tend to wear a lot of black and will dye items if they fade, no need to dispose of. We are far to wasteful as a society. And we love a good charity shop bargain. That is a part of off grid life that we are still trying to figure out. Thankfully we haven't had any issues with toxic mold, but we do get mildew in our family closet. We have a few ideas that we haven't implemented yet, but if they work, we will try to do a video on the topic. For now, we use hanging de-humidity bags and open windows whenever possible. We only run fans if absolutely necessary.🙂

I make my own skirts. I love them! I am a naturally modest person, I like skirts a bit below the knee, and I don't like low-cut or see-through clothing. People don't think I am modest at first impression; they think I "let it all hang out" because I seem hippie-ish/less made up, but that is not my natural way. I like comfort, style, and modesty. Living in Los Angeles, people tend to be immodest, in my opinion.

Clothing definitely doesn't have to be washed every time it's worn.Unless it gets very dirty or sweaty, clothing can be worn several times before washing. Clothes tend to wear out more from constantly washing them than wearing them. If you are able to save the rinse water from your washing machine when you do laundry, you can pour it back into the machine, add detergent, and run a second load. this is similar to how laundry was done in an old wringer type washing machine. 2-3 loads would be washed in the same wash water beginning with the whites and ending with dirty work clothes. The washer was drained, filled with clean rinse water, and the clothes were rinsed in the same order. Find buckets to save water in for watering plants, especially in the spring and summer if you grow a garden. The cost of water went up in our town so I am constantly looking for new ways to conserve it!!

Love this video! I was just thinking yesterday while mending one of my skirts, about doing my next, "how we afford organic food" video, and how buying used clothing and mending has helped us a lot! I actually have referred to some of my skirts as "frankenstein" skirts, because I keep mending them. I think it would be awesome to have a denim skirt for around the homestead! More durable! But, I haven't found one used yet. I may just have to make one, but I'm not as talented at using a sewing machine as hand-sewing or crochet. We buy our clothing used, mainly through thrift stores, garage/yard sales, or eBay. We too have accepted clothing from family and friends. We will buy farm boots, leather gloves, and socks, new, because those are harder to find used and we wear them out! We also, have "good clothes" for going places, learned that from my mom, growing up on a farm. Need to catch up on watching more of your videos! Have a blessed day!

My husband & I are low income (social security), so I make everything "do" for as long as I can. I am the "mending queen", I mend, darn, & patch all clothing (including socks & underwear) for as long as I can. I buy food in glass jars when possible so I can recycle the glass jars in my food storage. I save everything (twist ties, etc) -- the more you save, the less you buy. I'm always looking for discounts & bargains. It's a humble lifestyle, but we're living the way Yahweh would want us to. We get most of our food from the local food bank & I bought a couple of books on wild edibles for future foraging. The last things we bought retail were a couple of pairs of jeans for my husband as work clothes (he's a plumber) & some t-shirts & bed sheets from Goodwill. Praise the Lord for His bounty! He does provide! ✝️ Carol from Phoenix AZ

This sounds like me. I even knit all the socks with whatever I can get because store bought socks are nylon and are just near impossible to mend. I just can’t throw out what I can mend. If I can make it I don’t buy it. This goes for bakery food ( bread etc by hand”) all food home cooked, it’s not work it’s doing for my loved ones. I dislike any shopping! But I have found a lot of nice tops at our thrift store in town. Some I think have never been worn. Jeans I have one well-fitting brand - I understand the boys' jeans problem: jeans are not all created equal! So, about every 5 years I will order a bunch for the free shipping and when they are on sale. The old ones usually have one worn and torn knee - they get cut off and hemmed for shorts. Not washing everything after one or even half a day of wear surely helps - I will hang shirts and skirts and jeans on the wash line in the sun between wears, only the sweated and on the skin items get washed more often. When I grew up it was normal to have school clothes, Sunday clothes and play clothes. No one thought twice if you wore the same outfit to school three days in a row. How things have changed!

I love seeing your kids with clothes with dirt on them. We have property with red clay dirt and kids who are homeschooled and outside a lot. Our kids’ clothes are shot by the end of the season and some of their peers are walking around in white jeans or shoes that look unworn. Sometimes I feel guilty, but I know it’s just our life.

I agree that washing clothing wears it out. From what I read, Levis were intended to be frozen rather than washed to clean them. And jeans are not as good as they once were that is for sure. We, my husband and I, started buying him pants from a store called tractor supply and rural king because they make rugged work clothing and they last longer and are not that much more expensive, but well worth it when they last 3 or even 4 times as long as the jeans do these days. We were buying him jeans every 5 or 6 months, sometimes sooner and now with these new work clothes that we have started purchasing, he has gone almost 2 years in the same ones. So that has been a great difference.

I used to sow a lot of clothes for my 3 children. Our boys did not like the zippers so I made trousers with fake zippers and elastic in the waist. For our girl I sometimes made easy sweaters for her and 2 of her friends, so they could say they where triplets. My daughter shops a lot at thriftstores, and then I get to adjust the clothes to her liking ( witch often takes a lot of work.....well what els is there to do in live😉) I also shop at thriftstores and get a lot of stuff from my sister, she gets bored very fast. My husband is a frugal clothesshopper to, he only buys quality items on sale. He has a price in his mind and won't pay more than that, sometimes that means that he has to wait for the next season. And I repair a lot of stuff, even for friends.....coveralls and stuff
