What a wonderful video! Thank-you! You're children are amazing! I'm 64 and learning as much as I can as fast as I can. Made my first batch of ferments on Monday and today my 11-year-old granddaughter and I made our first batch of water-bathed canned jam! This is our second year of gardening and, once again, we will not produce a lot. BUT it's a learning process and next year the garden will do SO much better! We're getting there!

Us too. Second year gardening... expanded it from last year. Not very successful yet, I mean it wouldn't sustain us, but we're learning. Was successful with fermented beets so right now there is fermenting cabbage on the counter. Seems to be ok. Some kale came back from last year (zone 5) so I've started dehydrating it to add to chili's and smoothies. That's why I love watching homesteaders, you learn so much. And this family is so special. I love them all. 🥰

It has been great seeing the progress over time with the yard and garden. We have been watching your channel for years and just recently bought our own homestead in Douglas County Missouri. Currently we have lots of forest and we just had an acre cleared and are working on building our tiny house/shed that we will live in until we can build something a bit bigger. We will clear a bit more over time but are trying to focus our attention to one piece at a time. Currently as I look out on a lot of dirt (mud since it rained the other night) I remind myself this is just a phase in life and that one day we will have gardens as lovely as yours.

I started an Urban Farm at age 60 and I miss my dad, but remember how he fed our family of 7. Being able to walk into the orchard and eat from the trees is such a great memory. I obviously plant bigger so trees, so we can enjoy it in our last quarter of our life's. The first 2 seasons was quite challenging, but God provided encouragement, grace and resources. Just keep moving forward, no place for despair. Love from South Africa.🤗😇🙏🇿🇦

This might be some helpful perspective :) I grew up on a homestead. My parents still live on their homestead since 1973. I took so much knowledge with me when I moved out of the house, and I still wanted to be a homesteader. I will tell you that even with all that knowledge there was so much I wanted to do differently, and I made different choices from my parents. The biggest thing I learned was that it was impossible for me to do exactly what my parents did and that is okay. I had to look at things from the point of view that even though I lived this way my whole life, if I felt like I knew everything already then I would never be successful. I had to look at each day like a new beginning and learning opportunity. I could apply some of the knowledge I had and use that to learn more. I hope that makes sense. I am like you folks that I let my kids decide what aspect of homesteading they would like to pursue and if they want to stay with us as adults or move on :) I have all daughters, of course, which presents a unique set of challenges. Also... You are NOT kidding about fencing! Thanks for this video!

Carrie: I am 84 years old and all my life I have treated leg mites in chickens by dipping their entire lower leg in kerosene, making sure that the leg gets saturated. You may have to repeat the treatment a couple of times, but it definitely kills the leg mites without harming the chicken.
@susanyates42332 жыл бұрын
We never had leg mites, but were advised to use vaseline on the hens' legs, should they be affected..
@andy38andrews962 жыл бұрын
@@susanyates4233 Vaseline works by smothering the mites and is not quite as effective as kerosene which actually poisons the mite. After treatments with kerosene, the chicken sheds the scales under which the mites thrive and the new scales harden and looks almost like young chicken’s leg scales.

If I were young like your children, I would work a paying job for a couple of years and save money to purchase the items I needed. Since the family is used to living simply, debt free and without much they would be able to save almost everything they earn. For me a priority would be solar panels and running water, the proper tools a reliable vehicle, then I would start building, storage first and then a home, gardens would follow animals and all they require would be last, the one thing I would do differently would be to finish one major project before starting a new one, It has always seemed like you and Kyp take on multiple projects at the same time and that it takes forever to finish them because there are so many and time and finances are limited. I am a one major product at a time person, the clutter and chaos would raise my stress level through the roof. It is so nice that your kids want to continue homestead living. Having some money to purchase quality materials and tools even if they are recycled or repurposed will make the tasks easier, I in my life experience, I have learned that using the right stuff the first time saves money and time down the road.
