I have seen a lot of change in voting in NY over the years and am happy to see it moving in a good direction. It's wild how many people think living here is so much more expensive than other states (like FL) when that's demonstrably wrong. We have a decent cost of living, minimum wage is going up, and family farming is strong in upstate. Culture and history are uniquitous. Human rights are taken seriously! It's a beautiful state that keeps improving its environment. Seriously, keep Democrats in office and hold them accountable so pork doesn't get out of hand, and life will continue to improve. ❤
@HLBear6 ай бұрын
From Elise to Zeldin, there are plenty of maga and far right politicians in NY. Gerrymandering and anti-voting are common. :/ Yes, upstate is more conservative than downstate, and they tend to elect people to "fight the diverse and liberal City," even though that's garbage. My county is very right leaning, and I am open about being left even though it can be scary sometimes. I want any other hidden lefties to know they're not alone.

"There should not be a test of your endurance when you go to vote!". Exactly right! I find it extraordinarily ridiculous that there is rarely if ever a line in predominantly white, middle to upper class neighborhoods. While POC & poorer areas are required to wait in line for sometimes hours on end. In nearly every election, & I vote in them all, unless I stop to chat with neighbors, I am generally in & out of my polling place within 5 minutes, including the presidential election. Easy access to doing your civic duty should be federally mandated.

Marc, love your focus! I appreciate State Sen election focus & and successes! I've been 20yrs a Chief Judge in MD & NC voting precincts (and that's not even my day job!) I love my judges and poll workers who all help keep the voting experience sooo positive. I also love my high school student volunteers! MD ties HS graduation to community services hours. In Montgomery County MD, Dr. Z successfully ran this program from his computer. Easy easy as they say! I had kids in my polling places in and out all day fulfilling their duty. They were a god send! Sen Zellnor might not find the funding for an 'election officer' but there are plenty of ways to skin that cat. Always available for a chat. Retirement is boring! Keep fighting!❤

Great Podcast Mark and State Senator Zellnor Myrie! When I was in High School in the late 1960’s I believe as students we had an opportunity to visit what a voting booth looked like and how to use it to vote. The “old timey” metal ones with a solid curtain so no one could see for whom a person voted. In your episode tonight I think the concept of a “Democracy Officer” would be a great idea. I have never forgotten that voting booth experience I had as a young person. While times have changed the voting experience, I’m still grateful for that early opportunity to see what it is all about… I bet a representative from the State or Local League of Women Voters organization might be a good person to help with something like that ! Thank You Mark, it is always a pleasure to be one of your listeners and Democracy Docket newsletter readers !

I was amazed that when I moved back to NY State that I couldn't get a mail-in ballot unless I met the absentee criteria. I moved back to NY State after living in Idaho for 18 years and it was relatively easy to get a mail-in ballot in Idaho (not exactly a progressive state). I did like that I could register to vote at the DMV in NY State when I registered my car and transferred my driver's license.

India has a population of 1.4 billion people, whereof 969 millions were registered voters in the latest election. About 67% of them voted, that is 642 million votes. This means that India had 600% more votes to count than USA had last time. The Indian people managed this thanks to planning and following voting rules. USA is a pretty developed country and it's a scandal that you don't do better.

Developing countries I have lived in have shown me, too, how far the USA has to go to catch up & land in the 21st century. I guess the conservatives there are of the 1860 vintage, before emancipation the slaves, before enfranchisement of women, then of people of colour, & all the details that flow from those rights.

I a, from Buffalo. I think I'll give the Senetors office a call. I really want nys to give the franchise back to those who r incarcerated, WHILE INCARCERATED. Let alone the audacity this country has that so,e states never give the franchise back even after their sentence is long over. Citizens in this country get rights and privileges and return we must follow the laws passed by our representatives. When someone breaks those rules ams are given incarceration that "contract" doesnt stop. Yes, some rights must be curtailed but I find it monstrous we take ALL of them away but also demand the inmate not further break any laws or they CAN AMD WILL B CHARGED with those new crimes. The right this country STEALS from its citizen more than any other is VOTING. Since our founding all or part of the government has worked harder to stop Americans from voting. We will NEVER have a truely free liberal secular democracy until every adult citizen has the right to vote in every election. It shouldnbe a DUTY with a law requiring everyone vote.
@nicolebraida79005 ай бұрын
Remember that during the 2020 election the reason Trump didn’t want his voters to vote by mail is that he felt his voters would come out on the actual voting day and he wanted the raced called while he was ahead on votes and wanted all the mail ballots to be thrown out saying the day had passed and he won.

A democracy officer in every school seems like a good idea, but let's do a reality check. My state is desperately cutting everything that can be cut - music classes, art classes, after school programs, even teaching positions - because of budget shortfalls. My town recently voted on whether to raise property taxes a tiny amount in order to close the local budget gap and avoid laying off teachers and increasing class sizes (again); the proposition was voted down by a healthy majority. Taxes is the dirtiest of dirty words here in this red state. Funding a new democracy officer position? That is pie-in-the-sky. Maybe in wealthy New York but not in my backyard. Good idea but impossible to implement in many places, I'll bet. In an ideal world we would not need a democracy officer...

If it’s against the law to hand out free water, then make them win it. Simply, approach a voter in line, put your hand behind your back, and ask them to guess how many fingers you’re holding up. And voila, you have a “winner, winner chicken dinner”. Give them their winning bottle of water. Nothing was given away.
