Phenomenal. Just goes to show a few things: 1. less red tape and things can happen - authorities are not shackled 'in principle' 2. we have the technology 3. the west is too hung up on privacy and 'oh your looking at my knickers' sentiments to embrace this tech. Keller, If you are EVER looking to develop this in the UK, PLEASE get in touch, I am aiming to implement similar systems, create similar cultural vibes, and to generally make it happen. Would love to meet you in person, I'll keep an eye out for your world tour!

This is such excellent problem-solving. Is there ever a problem with weather or other factors that can affect flight? What kind of measures are in place to deal with disruptions of the system? (say a freak solar storm knocks out some of the communication infrastructure)
@cuscof27 жыл бұрын
There is more information and an interesting FPV video from one of the drones on their web site. These things can fly right through a typical African thunderstorm without too much trouble, they navigate using GPS satellite signals, and the communications network that they use is the country's cellular system. About as reliable as is possible, all considered.
@DamassysKadesh7 жыл бұрын
That's awesome. It seems like the use of these drones could expand to include all sorts of medicine delivery, and even food rations to remote areas... they might have limited range, but a different version of the same tech could be developed.

Hopefully this great project will manage noise from drones, particularly near drone hubs. Also thought "market disruption" referred to illegally entering a market (eg ride sharing disrupting poor old licenced taxi drivers who paid $ for licences), rather than merely providing new technology. Engineers provide new technology everyday, with no market disruption required. Looks like the project has the highest levels of government approval to me, good work Zip.

He's wrong about "Entrepreneurship" being our solution. He's forgetting that the Governments of those countries decided to invest and spend Taxpayer money on these contracts. Entrepreneurship is a key component but how is it solving problems in n America? Now everyone can be their own boss with the Uber app. Thanks! I highly recommend Anand Giridharadas to anyone who doubts this. He's brilliant and he's in the room with these people. What these guys are doing in Rawanda is Amazing! Like he said, they don't have "Legacy Infrastructure" there that has to be overcome or coordinated with. But it is their Government's that need to be applauded for using that money to innovate in ways that help those most in need. They could have used that money to renovate the capital city or give the richest in the country tax breaks! I'm sure there is some tired industry there that could use a "Bailout". Instead, they invested in the people. #HelloSomebody

It is very much needed in India,too, but the politicians in collusion with bureaucrats demand huge sums of money from service providers.This makes it impossible to introduce such lifesaving services unless the service provider also is in collusion with them.

Generally, I'm fairly impressed by this technology and I believe such project has made one of greatest contributions to the whole world. However, I believe there are still some technical difficulites to overcome and the prevelance of such technology is still questionable. First, what can the center of blood do if all of drones are on their delivery and they have received a call from a hospital which has no storage of blood at all? Maybe this problem is esay to solve by making more drones. But what how many drones are sufficient? Second, how can drones miss any assignments even in horrible nature disasters such as hurricane and heavy raining days? Apparently, delivery blood and medicine by drones cannot be the only way. In my opinion, it is worthy that hospitals prepares their own blood storage and people stock their own emergency medecines even though these mean more space occupied and medicines' expirations.
@Curiousviewer22 Жыл бұрын
Obviously, there is a trade-off between decentralized storage of blood with high cost and wastage vs. centralized storage with zero wastage. Given the efficiency of delivery by air vs sometimes impassable roads, this is a great solution. The problematic scenario that you proffer would be troublesome even in a decentralized situation, but with the added impossibility of delivering the blood in a timely manner.
