And I bet you could buy that gear for $20 completely worked. Here in the states it would be well over $500 for the same thing. After-all, the material and labor is cheap. The government controls are whats expensive. The workman's comp and insurances. Thats what you really pay for. I'm in CA. Once this mileage tax hits the state population, I will just pass that cost to the consumer. Then the consumer doesn't understand why shit is so expensive.

It pains me to see them using these old cemented carbide bits. Modern cutting tools are very cheap now, and would triple their speed at least.

At least its not high speed steel. Besides, once a gear hobber is set it doesn't need to be babysat, so its not like they are losing man-hours, which is whats actually important.
@paulgallagher2937

@@smh9902 The labor cost into that is ridiculous low. Most of those guys probably making $1 -2 per day. Even if they had 100 man hours into it, its only 20 bucks labor cost. As for quality, I've yet to see anything resembling a gage or a drawing used in any of these videos. I have no idea how the gears are expected to fit. Lots of comments from people saying how impressive this is, but its not. Just hogging material with big machines. It does look cool, and is fun, but complicated it is not.
@smh9902
@smh9902 Жыл бұрын
@@paulgallagher2937 Agree'd. I have a manufacturing business in the US where we use a lot of old big machines like these to do similar work, and it comes out looking fantastic. We also use modern calibrated instruments and hire only experienced machinists.

@@smh9902 The only thing I saw measured was the bore of the gear. He used a vernier caliper on the ID, and had it at about a 30 degree angle. But he gave the thumbs up, so I guess its in spec.
@smh9902
@smh9902 Жыл бұрын
@@paulgallagher2937 I noticed that as well, horrible practice. He did not ensure the jaws were flat nor parallel to t he surface, nor did he clean the surface before taking a measurement. Its a real shame, too. They have machines that though old are plenty capable in their own right, a small 10% amount of additional psychological effort would increase their quality by a full standard deviation. As an employer, I've noticed this plague of mental lethargy sweep over the general public. They by and large do not want to think, IE to put mental effort into the task at hand they are doing. This is the #1 cause of the drop in quality.

The young chap who lifted the billet at 2:41 - it looks about 100 mm thick and about 450 mm diameter - the weight will be around 140 kg. No wonder it looked like he was struggling. Since he completely went against safe lifting (keep back straight and vertical), he'll soon have a wrecked back and be joining the ones who just sit around. In a western country, the foreman would be sacked and/or prosecuted for allowing him to lift it. The chap looked at the camera and gave like he was proud of his lifting. He's an idiot for doing it.
