New here? My name is Lea and I live with my partner Maarten and our toddler Puck on our land in Central Portugal. We left the rat race in the Netherlands a little over a year ago, and moved south in our old campervan. Last year we bought land in Portugal that had been abandoned for several decades. Slowly we are cleaning the land and building our dream off-grid homestead from the ground up. This channel documents all the different jobs we have to do, and sometimes some nice footage of this beautiful country we now call home. Want to see more updates? Don't forget to subscribe!

Portugal need more people like you, regenerating nature. As a long term (more than 50 years) resident in C. Branco, I saw what climate change and global warming has been doing. Just a tip, hugelkultur and swales work very well here, by my experience, reduced the watering frequency and the amount of water I spend. Love your pond.

Much admiration to you and your wee family, Lea! I spent 37 years in education (elementary) and allowed my dreams of homesteading to be overrun by 'working to live'. You all are young and I can see the determination in your eyes as well as the pride in what you have accomplished and it makes me humble. You are the dream---the land, the work, the puppy (lol), and the family you establish there is the journey. Happy travels on that road you all are on!

When I saw the outhouse I thought it would be a hole in the ground until I saw the bucket. I think that the compost is the most best ways and the solar...living free is more liberating. I grew up back in the days where the Japanese introduced this compost toilet and many thought that it was dirty or gross? But as a young person I made sense. With all the sewage problems and disease, compost is the cleanest and productive alternative in food production. Congratulate you all for such an amazing work you're all doing. It seems like more and more younger people are doing impressive things like you folks. I look forward to seeing exciting things to come. I plan on returning to this kind of lifestyle real soon. In the meantime I will be rooting for you all. By the way you have a beautiful child and these years will glass before your eyes like you have with your parents. My children are all in their 40s. I wish they will one day change but like their mom, they've become to worldly. Be that as it may, I can only wish everyone the very best. I am in retirement years and have adopted my father's joy of living close to mother nature while living such an amazing life just like you and your husband. Again I am rooting for you all and look forward to all your videos. Blessings.

It's such a brilliant adventure, isn't it?I hope you have made the well safe for your child??? I've been using compost loos for over 15 years. If you follow the 'Humanure Handbook' by Joe Jenkins then you will know that it is safe to put all your 'waste' in one compost heap. It makes brilliant compost for all parts of the garden. I also found having volunteers was an immense help and lots of fun.

You can make the dog house last longer if you get some motor oil and mix in some diesel fuel. That will make it thinner and also to absorb into the wood better. I hope as you do, that your well will fill with fresh cool water for all your needs. Here in America we measure land by acres. Do you know how many acres you are working now. Olives is a very good crop for that hot region. I lived in Spain for a number of years. That was also their main crop along with avocado. Good luck. Hope to see many more videos.

Will you have an apple tree close to the outhouse? My grandparents tastiest and biggest apples were from the tree that shaded the outhouse, and my grandpa said that was always true. Best oranges come from algarve (South), If for some weather freak year and snow a lot (maybe like the freak year that snow in Lisbon, last time was 2006 and the year before was 1974), they can try to protect the trees then. agulz123 we paid about 40 cents per square meter in the end, which is very little even for Portugal, usual is about a euro per square meter and up in the area. Much more expensive in the Algarve. We hope to make some money from the olives and maybe more fruit trees and vegetables, but that’s all just plans for now. With a family you already need quite some garden space so for now it is just for self sufficiency.

@ourportuguesehomestead
@ourportuguesehomestead 4 жыл бұрын
Don’t mind at all, very good question! Couple of reasons. Life in the mountains is harder, because you have to go up and down all the time. We’ve done that and it got exhausting. There is also a big fire risk, because of the pine and eucalyptus plantations, especially if you don’t live in a village. And we could also get more land for our money here. These were our considerations and there are also plus points to living in the mountains (like more water) and I secretly still dream of a little mountain cottage.

You want a channel then yiu give information, successes and failures. Price of land, legal costs, planning permission. Is there other land available? Are u interested in forming a cooperative with neigbours to share equipment (avoids duplication) etc? Are u going to keep climate records? I am a builder with full tool kit/ software knowledge/ solar powered RV, but so what, it is extremely difficult to survive doing what you are attempting. Do you have a written plan? What about fires? etc.

You’re trying to make out that you’re the only people who have land in their 20’s!! It probably cost a fraction of what my house cost so don’t make out like you’ve done something no one else your age has done!!

I think you are reading a bit more into the title than what I intended with the video. Nowhere in the video it says we’re the only ones. The purpose of the video is to tell you how WE did it. I’m aware that other people make much more money than we do and some people are willing to go into debt to buy their dream property, but that doesn’t mean there is no value to this video. You also shouldn’t forget that for our generation it is much harder to buy property than for previous ones.
