The segment about the death of the down-to-earth, community-oriented multiplayer games is spot on. I miss these days when many game servers were a good occasion to chill and hang out with friends and strangers alike (along with some friendly competition). There are still some servers like that around, especially in older games with smaller playerbases, but indeed it requires some digging. Great vid!

This is so great to see. I'm an "old guy" (43) so chatroom games weren't a part of my childhood. My equivalent was actual text chatrooms using AOL (actual AOL chatrooms on the paid service itself, not just AIM) and things like IRC and telnet games. When visual chatroom games started to appear, I absolutely loved the concept. However, I was an adult by that time, so things like Club Penguin were something I kind of missed the boat on. I was aware of their existence, but they weren't something I actively engaged with. I played (and continue to play) plenty of MMO's, but I always felt the purity of the social experience in chatroom games was disrupted, in MMO's, by the need to do things like level or raid. There was this sense of urgency present that always seemed to make people feel like they shouldn't just be sitting around talking. I was hopeful that chatroom games would continue to evolve, but they just started to kind of... die out. I remember thinking, years ago, "What needs to happen is that the kids who loved these things need to become adults, get a bit of nostalgia for them, and start reviving the genre." With webfishing, this appears to potentially be happening, and I hope I'm right.

I was waning to make this EXACT essay but didn't have the experience with editing needed for it, I'm so glad someone else did it for me haha! I'm glad to see someone touching on the atmosphere as well. my other favorite thing is the slow manual nature of things. my best example is that rather than just spawning a chair and sitting, you have to set the chair up, jump on it, and use a sit emote. it feels like playing with toys instead of the game automating some of the most fun parts.

My favorite thing to do now is start servers where I sit and practice, and other people will hop in and do some fishing and chat with me while I practice my song. Immaculate vibes. My only wish is that each guitar has its own set of preset chords, so you could set up one for a specific jam and then another for example with a bunch of basic chords. I also wish that you could tune down strings lower than standard, playing with a baritone guitar or dadgad or something would be a dream. God I love this game

That is very interesting however Lucid seem to not know about Roblox, I always wondered why some Roblox games dont get outside to steam or consoles. I would consider Roblox to be the biggest chatroom game, and the most popular game on Roblox is a game where there is no real game play(brookhaven), its just a suburban town that kids come to hang out, chat and play pretend, it got an average concurrent player of 300K players at any given time and its just one game on that platform there are many like it and other with lo key mechanic and close and nit communities around it (just to compare fortnite average is 1.5m)
@LucidMakesVideos17 күн бұрын
I know about Roblox, and have played it several times over the course of years. It wasn't discussed in this video for two reasons: 1. It's community-driven nature leads to it being kind of difficult to define. In essence, it is a game engine, more than a game, so I felt it was out of the scope of this video. 2. It came out a long time ago, over a decade now, so it doesn't contribute to the lack of chatroom games in the modern day.

You nailed a feeling that I didn't even know I had. Growing up, I basically only played Gmod (because that was the only game my crappy computer could run). That wasn't really a problem, though, because Gmod is so diverse and (importantly) COMMUNITY-ORIENTED. It was so easy to hop onto a server and share experiences with other people and bond over those experiences. When I got my new (better) computer, I was able to play tons of other games. But game nowadays really don't come anywhere near the community-building and experience-sharing that Gmod had/has to offer.

The Chatroom genre is very active in VR. Notably Gorilla Tag is basically a chat room/hang out game and it is the most profitable modern VR game with it recently hitting $100M lifetime revenue.

In this game for 10 hours so far ive bought the therapy chair and spare chairs. With those items I have hosted open therapy sessions where I let people talk with someone to listen to

This is a fantastic video! You hit so many of the reasons why I love this game. It’s gotten a ton of my friends who I don’t normally play with to play with me! It’s so cool just chilling with them :]

man i miss chatroom games. The great times i had on games like furcadia and the fishing in gaiaonline and on the forums on neopets, which arguably were / are all chatroom games, were a blast! while i had pets on neopets, i never got rich on it because i used neopets for the forums. the same was true for gaiaonline - never had fancy outfits ect especially as the economy on that in particular was broken as hell, but spent hours and hours hanging with people on the forums. that sort of game is so unappreciated by the younger generation

Also games like Everquest were designed around slow gameplay with large downtime between fights to facilitate players talking to each other. And games like Active Worlds were insanely popular with their own markets of people selling character models

This brings me back to old runescape, just sitting on the dock fishing for sharks with random people. Truly a vibe.

Although a game like AC:NH is far more complex in things to do, Webfishing will always have the novelty of being able to interact with new people in a way you can't do in Animal Crossing
