What Is The Story Behind Birth Of Pandavas?
It is not uncommon to see unnatural process of birth in our various Hindu epics. In Mahabharata, many central characters were born out of divinity than the usual ways of birth. Let’s find out in detail about how the Pandavas were born.
King Pandu although known to have five sons, had no biological children of his own. One day Pandu was roaming in the forest in search of animals to hunt. Soon, he found two deers mating with each other. Without any empathy for the animals or the circumstances they were in, he shot two arrows in their direction. The deer couple was in fact a sage named Kindama and his wife. Rishi Kindama along with his wife took the form of deer and were mating in the open forest. Pandu killed the two, however before his death the sage in his pain and anger cursed Pandu that when he tries to go near his dear one filled with desire he would die, and the woman with whom he would want to mate would die as well.
After killing the two, Pandu was in deep grief. He was so regretful of his act that he decided to renounce his kingdom and live the life of an ascetic. His two wives Kunti and Madri also decide to renounce everything and retire in forests with their husband. One day, Pandu saw a group of saints walk together that seemed to him like a long journey. Upon questioning the saint, he found that they were on their way to Brahma Nivas, the abode of Brahma. Pandu had a desire to join them in their journey, but the sages informed that there was no place for Pandu in the heaven as he does not have any children. As per the Vedic system, a man need to repay four debts in his lifetime - debts to the celestials in the form of Yagyas and sacrifices, debt to the sages through education and meditation, debt to his ancestors by having children and debt to the mankind by perform acts of kindness and love. Pandu having no children had not repaid his debt to his ancestors and hence would not be allowed in BrahmaLok. Pandu abandoned the thought and went back to his palace disheartened.
