Vidur From Mahabharata - An Avatar Of Yama (Dharma)
In the Mahabharata, Virdur was the half brother of Dhritarashtra and Pandu. While Dhritarashtra and Pandu were the Kings at varied points in time, Vidur was the Prime Minister of Hastinapur. He was famously known for his devotion to dharma (righteousness). Vidura was considered the most wise man in all of Bharatvarsha. Whatever happened, Vidura always took the side of righteousness. Therefore, he always favored the Pandavas. On several occasions, he advised Dhritarashtra and Duryodhana to take the path of dharma, but they ignored him. In fact, Vidura was the incarnation of Lord Yama himself, the god of dharma and death but was cursed to be born on earth as result of his deeds from his previous birth. The story of his previous birth goes like this. Once there lived a sage named Mandavya, who was well versed, conversant with duties and devoted to truth and dharma. His ashram was isolated deep into the woods. He used to sit under a giant tree at the entrance of his hermitage, meditating in sheer silence. With no human sign in the dense forest, he was all by himself. One day a bunch of robbers with their looted money escaped from the town and reached his hermitage. They concealed themselves in the sanctum without coming into notice of the sage, who was immersed in meditation. When King’s guards followed the thieves, they reached the place of sage and upon seeing sitting outside under the tree they began enquiring sage Mandavya about the robbers. The Brahmana deep into his meditation didn’t reply to their questions. Agitated guards searched the hermitage and soon located the hiding robbers with boxes of stolen treasure. The suspicion fell on Muni Mandavya and they took him under their arrest along with robbers. The king ordered his guards to carry out the execution of all men including the Muni. Following the orders the guards sentenced all of the robbers and impaled the sage. Deprived of life and food, the sage was left all alone in the prison of the king. Days passed but sage Mandavya didn’t give up his life. He was breathing and resisting pain with all his Yogic powers. The guards reported to the king when the sage's soul didn't leave him. The King now having seen the powers of the sage started second guessing his decision and thought if he had been wrong and hasteful in punishing the sage.

I don't understand one thing about Vidura. He was born on earth as a result of sage Mandavya's curse on Yama. This means that Yama's soul had to have disappeared from where he originally was and confined within a mortal human body who eventually became known as Vidura and was trapped inside Vidura till he died. Then how was Yama able to test his son Yudhishtra during the Yaksha Prashna?

Avataras of Devas don't necessarily work like that. One Deva can take multiple Avataras at the same time. Rama and Parashurama, and later Parashurama, Vedavyasa and Krishna coexisted at the same time.

@@kshatrapavan But none of those avatars were due to curses. It was just Vishnu taking avatars to establish dharma and some of them being alive to meet each other. Vidura's case is different in that he was cursed to be born as a mortal on earth. If Yama was able to appear independent of Vidura, then that would mean that the curse has failed in its purpose. Somehow I doubt that.

I remember this story. Isn't it amazing that Dharma is so fair and just!!! A child cannot be treated like an adult when it comes to crime and punishment...
