Daksh, This is a great question. Unfortunately, it's a very difficult one to answer -- especially in just a few sentences. In general, automating tasks that are simple, repetitious, costly, error-prone, or dangerous is beneficial to an economy -- provided that the value you receive from them is greater than the cost to create and maintain these smart machines. Essentially, automation makes an economy more productive. Unfortunately, the more jobs we automate with machines, the more humans will lose those jobs in the short term. So, we need to invest (as a society) in educating our labor force to upgrade their careers to either technical roles (e.g creating, training, managing, or maintaining smart machines) or for uniquely human roles (e.g. teaching, nursing, creativity, compassion, empathy, etc.) -- the things machines don't do very well. We need to strike the right balance between machines doing what they do best and humans doing what they do best. When we combine human labor with machine labor, we end up with a labor force that is more productive than either human labor or machine labor alone. Essentially the combination of the two ends up as a "productivity multiplier" for one another. In addition, we need to figure out how to optimally allocate resources in an economy where most of the world of real economic value is done by machines. This could entail a variety of options including a Guaranteed Basic Income, Negative Income Tax, a Social Stipend, or Universal Basic Ownership. I think this is how we create a productive high-tech economy or revive a stagnant economy using technology and public policy.
