Is there a huge crash coming to the classic car market? In this 2nd of two videos on the impending 2030 Petrol and Diesel Car Sales ban I take a look at a piece written three years ago about how this ban will impact car values, particularly of classic cars... How did my 3 year old predictions fare, was I spot on, way off or have things accelerated faster than even I could have imagined?

I thought the 2030 or 2035 "ban" was a ban on NEW petrol and diesel cars. We do not of course need ANY NEW petrol and diesel cars, just well maintained existing cars using petrol and diesel cars. It would still depend on availability of fuel, its cost, and other horrible taxes to be brought in...

Yes, the ban is only regarding new cars - however, if you followed recent demands of the German car manufacturers, they want to keep producing ICE cars if the fuel is artificial / bio fuel. Let's be honest, EVs right now won't take over, also listening to Geoffs nightmarish story, he left out that battery development will become better and better. Individual car ownership won't go away, because the majority of people still live rural. There is a new battery technology coming from Tesla and it's a game changer, the cars will reach up to 1000mls range and fast charging will take 45 minutes - to be honest, I kinda could live with that if the range is around 850 to 1000mls.

🔥I don't personally want a new car, but we do absolutely NEED new cars. 🔥 1) HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of cars are written off in accidents per year (384,000 average per year) ✅ 2) 1 MILLION cars are scrapped per year once they reach their end of life (often due to rust in the humid often coastal UK) ✅ 3) 1 MILLION new people MINIMUM are arriving in the UK every year ✅ 💥That's an almost 2.5 million car deficit per year 💥 There are only 33million non-SORN cars in the UK, it would only take a few years for the entire UK drivable car stock to disappear. There are around 700,000 disposable electric prat mobiles on the road currently, which will have a usable lifespan of 7-10 years at most

From what my Uncle saw at the Festival Of the Unexceptional when I took him there in 2022 he noticed that there were loads of people from the ages 20 to 40 driving older cars, some of which he remembered his parents owning and some of which he used to drive. So judging by that there is still a following for older cars especially when certain kids aren't interested in playing on a computer or into the latest gadgets. We are seeing the same happen at preserved railways a lot of younger volunteers both men and women in those age groups are volunteering to run the trains, man the signal boxes and work in other departments including myself as we don't always care about computers and prefer keeping older items running. Lets put it this way if anything like a computer or electronic gadget fails on me it gets close to the point it has a flying lesson, and if I was forced to buy a EV and it broke down on me, I will just abandon it and not even bother getting it recovered.

Cast your mind back a few years. (Eerie music) To a time when we were being told how wonderful diesel cars were. Thousands of people flocked to buy them, all very exciting....then the bubble burst! Diesel fuel shot up in price, the cars were seen as dirty - and they were, they still are, although they're much better now than they've ever been. Petrol cars have just got cleaner and more efficient; and the addition of lpg made them cleaner than ever. Diesels started to fade. EVs will go the same way, for lack of infrastructure to support them, lack of range, lengthy re-charge times, adding hours to the most simple long distance journey. EVs are here to stay, but ICE cars will stay too, partly due to the tax revenues and also due to their sheer reliability and convenience. This current government might be idiots (and in my opinion, they are) but future governments won't be. Have faith Geoff, and remember, real cars are going to be with us for many decades, probably always. The classic owners tend to be relatively wealthy, and money talks. Money is power and influence, and these people will want to keep their love of cars alive. They usually get what they want! I drive a Lexus which insures as a modern JDM classic; I also own a beautiful Mercedes-Benz C220 Esprit, and I'm a member of the Mercedes-Benz club. I meet and mix with a lot of fabulously wealthy collectors, enthusiasts all; and we're all equal in the sight of our cars. I've been bought lunch by the owner of a million pound 300SL Gull-wing, who spent nearly an hour being excited by my humble C class. At JDM meets, my Lexus draws attention among the pristine Subarus, Evo's and Skylines because it's seen as a VIP car, plus, I'm older than most of the members and kind of get looked up to; even though I don't deserve it at all. Mercedes-Benz, JDM and all the other clubs will never let our beautiful cars die. Remember I said that when we're still going strong in 2089. I'll be dead, but our cars won't be.

💥Calling diesels "dirty" is a huge scam, especially anything Euro V or newer 💥 The eco loons will tell you about the dangerous "particulates" from diesels. Most people are unaware that the particulate limit for BOTH Euro V and Euro VI is 0.005g/km and that's the SAME for petrol and diesel!!! My 2009 Volvo XC70 D5 has a particulate output limit of 0.001, which is the lowest value they will measure, but its Euro V not Euro VI, only because of the year it was made, therefore it's not ULEZ exempt, but my F10 BMW M5 with a 4.4litre twin turbo engine that also funny enough has the same 0.001 particulate limit IS ULEZ exempt 🤣😂

There are only 13 petrol stations in the UK that sell CNG/LNG which is even greener and cleaner than LPG which is getting phased out. This tells me it's electric cars or nothing and for most the cost of electric cars that means nothing as in not owning a car .I also believe the charging problems of owning a electric car will not get any better because the simple fact is they don't want us owning a car because it's a form of control. CNG is very popular in India as a means of controlling pollution in large Cities so why not in this Country ?

Before the 70 limit, I was taking a young lady on holiday with me. We were approaching Wales, with the Bridge in the distance. My 3.4 MKII Jaguar was showing around 130 when she operated the fresh air lever, which opened the vent at the rear of the bonnet. Both front carpets and the contents of the fag tray ended up on the rear seats. I managed to stop for the toll, but when we got home and I checked the old lady over, (car). I found the brake disks were grey - not a speck of rust. Ah, the good old days. I'm still with that young lady. The Jag moved on, sadly.

One thing I think you got wrong was the relative optimum on the availability of EV powered vehicles (or pods). Once ICE vehicles have been eliminated, a combination of (rare) rare earths to make batteries and the additional load on the power grid will keep vehicle ownership out of reach of low and medium income households. Politicians will wake up to the fact that the HT power lines are heating the atmosphere, so will look to implementing new “green” taxes.

Nice piece of fiction indeed. Meanwhile, back in the present day we can see the end of the road for the battery car. Prices dropped like the voltage of a ni cad battery on a cold morning. Apart from the initial expense of a vw golf for example, the running cost of charging and trying to find the charge points for a simple 200 mile round trip, plus the time involved to sit and charge up, assuming that there is no queue is in fact unworkable. Meanwhile, the jcb people are running hydrogen fuel engines. These lovely engines develop substantially more power than Diesel or petrol and by volume, use far less to obtain that power too. But please don’t worry petrolheads, while we wait for the fine tuning of hydrogen, which in my view would require a new cylinder head and fuel delivery system , we have plenty of other options. Bio fuels, for both petrol and Diesel are available, but don’t get news coverage. The electric dream ? Just wake up to reality.

The price of fuel over there is still comparable to the UK but their diesel is cheaper than petrol now as most private vehicles are EV or hybrid, the majority of the hybrids will be petrol hybrid leaving diesel as the choice of fuel for haulage. I am staying diesel as at current UK fuel prices it is still marginally cheaper per mile and when most people are in petrol hybrids or EV's i am hoping the fuel prices flip back to diesel being cheaper again.

Have a listen to the 1981 song Red Barchetta by Canadian rock trio Rush. Based on a short story from road and track it tells the story in a dystopian future where young man visits his uncle once a week to drive a Ferrari mm166 in defiance of the motor law. Looks like science fiction is on its way to becoming reality.

Good article . I was watching a video about ice ban, specifically talking about Motorbikes. Hadn't really given it that much thought, neither has the govt. Not really suitable for batteries and practical issues. Tech is way behind cars, cost is crazy. Govt making it harder and more costly to get a license. (Passed around 2005). I'm thinking about another bike. But thought, how long until we can't ride them. Will need a freedom pass and save carbon points. Next video I watched was this, so a bit spooky. I am turning more Geoff like, the more vids I watch? Will I start buying slightly lairy clothing?

Why are they not touching scrambler bikes, jet skis, motor boats, etc. or am I missing something. They could also limit the number of cars registered to a single household (assuming it is not a business address). So many people are way beyond two cars and streets are full of vehicles that cannot be accommodated on the drive or even in front of the address of the registered keeper. Then there are rally cars, stick cars , quad bikes and others. But no, everyone is worried that their one vehicle is about to be banned outright or priced off the road. Bang goes the caravan market, second homes, out of town shopping malls, away matches and more besides. Public transport is decades away, if not more, from coping with exactly the response our ‘rulers’ are hoping for.

My daily is a Volvo 940 turbo estate, 6 months ago these weere being imported from Japan as nice examples here are few and far between. They are now selling for 2-3k less, so I've just lost money if i sell it through bo fault of my own. Ive a Volvo 240 aswell, they were getting up in the 5-6-7k range, now they ate striggling to make 3k. Yet the same models in poor condition over 40yrs old so (tax, mot, ulez exempt) are going for far more than they are worth!

The 2030/35 new ICE car ban, will make the 2nd hand car market blow up I reckon. Shell, BP etc aren't about to stop selling fuel, the infrastructure is already fully established, EVs still aren't viable for an awful lot of people. I don't think the government are going to let go of the tax they are collecting from fuel just yet either.

It’s a nightmare scenario you have come up with. But whilst autonomous vehicles might be ok in a city, I’m not so sure out in the country. Plus what about builders, plumbers, carpenters, electricians etc? I work in that industry and we need a vehicle to carry tools and materials around. Then think of the leisure industry with motorhomes, campervans and caravans. That’s a multimillion pound industry alone. Then you have all the campsites located around the country. If nobody drives anymore and we don’t have tourism in places that rely on it, I wonder how they will survive 😞

I think those who can afford classic cars will still be able to drive them because they have the money for a full electric conversion, but it will come with a robot computer to override the owners sporty desires. For the rest who drove bog standard cars, they will be on their bike.

I have been thinking this ever since the future ban on new petrol and diesels was announced. Car ownership is dying as most new cars are effectively just leased already. In the future, most people will just book a journey from a to b using an app on a phone and a self driving car will arrive to take you there, just like a taxi. Uber are only using human drivers now because they have to. You will probably still have a choice of what car to be in and will be charged accordingly. The car will then go back to a centralised charging point. The only thing that I would add to the predictions in the video will be a law banning the private storage of petrol or diesel. All but a few classic cars will have to swap their ICE for a battery.

I think there's going to be petrol/diesel around at least until 2050 and you will still be able to import an engine or engine parts for your ICE vehicle and classic vehicles for a very long time to come, I think we are end up a bit like India where we will repair and repair our ICE cars maybe even learn to panel beat the panels when we have a ding with someone.

but it's not just classic cars, the classic/retro lorry scene is massive as is classic heavy plant etc etc. this insane push to stop diesel/petrol will be so costly as we still need crude oil for manufacturing plastic and rubber etc which EV's need! but you decrease global demand for oil then the refining cost goes up which means we all pay more.

With Ultra Low Emission Zones (ULEZ) spreading, I just can't see how a 'classic' car will be viable (I mean in fact pre 'Euro 6', so not that old), as to go anywhere on a longer drive, you're going to be travelling through several zones and paying for each one.

Scary has foooook. I’m going on a road trip too a classic event. I better enjoy it why I can. Hey I’ve been saying similar for the last few years and has you know prices have sort of slowed right down. Classes are for sale longer and only the very best seem to still be selling. I own 20 classes bikes. Sort of a investment and pension fund in one. If they was stocks or shares I’d sell them but my heart tells me too hang on a bit longer. But I think classics will die out with our generation. A thirty something year old thinks a citron saxo is a classic. It’s over we just don’t want to accept it.
