If you're in an English speaking country it's pretty easy to adopt any OS but if you only know Polish for example there was a time where that was considerably more difficult.

These are all my speculations, but I think the big adoption of Windows in Poland, and almost no Mac, or Linux came down to tech illiteracy. In America computers started at big companies, and made they way down to small businesses and home users, so select people knew how to use computers from work, and could bring that to homes. In Poland there were no computers in workplaces (or very little, if any), so people just bought cheap (so no Mac) and pre-installed (so no Linux) solutions. Even if you built a computer yourself, you would buy an operating system, that you can actually get a CD of in the store. To get a Linux you'd have to have it copied for you by a local nerd, or you would have to know, who to mail, to get a CD mailed back. While behind the big water these tech literate people were easier to encounter, in Poland there were little. Also, no usage of computers in business, meant the only purpose Poles bought them for was gaming. And you know, which OS is the one for gaming.

OK, I was actually a computer guy being around those days. Microsoft didn't allow people to crack Windows, it's a new thing, W10 onward I think. But what you may not fully realize, those times pirated soft had 100% of the market, early 90's you wouldn't find a legit copy of anything, anywhere. The mindset was that all software is free, which was carried through from communism times, in that frame Linux just didn't make no sense, and Macs were absurdly expensive.

Speaking of localisation, I installed pop recently. Ended up needing to use the tty, but the tty was in my native language with no option for English. I don't think tty commands work in languages other than English Tty fun with pop aside, most installers do a horrible job at supporting any language other than English. And man, have you tried changing your system language and region on Plasma? There's like 10 different settings for something that should be as simple as Language: Locale/Region:

Yeah, the command line and some specialized software like GIMP works best in English. Let's face it, English is the mother tongue of computing.

I got my first PC AT with DOS 5.0 and later 6.22 and to use it I just learn some English. many times I didn't fully understand i.e what directory means I just knew you can go inside and file is something you can execute (run game) or view (picture). Speaking of games... this is a reason I learn English without teacher... I remember I play en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betrayal_at_Krondor and go thru dialog I just sit with dictionary (paper) and translate word by word... it took ages :)
