Divorce is never easy. However, in many countries in Asia, difficult is an understatement. Divorce carries considerable stigma and social pressure, and is viewed as a sign of failure in many societies. It’s even illegal in the Philippines.
Vice World News' Natashya Gutierrez speaks with women who are affected by difficult divorce laws in the Philippines and India.

In the Philippines the Catholic Church and state are the obstacles to make allow Divorce to be legal. We're trapped in outdated laws and our people keep voting the same people over and over again as lawmakers. The Church also has significant power that can sway(bloc voting) who is elected at the highest of positions in the country.

Majority of Filipinos are in favor of divorce as recent polls show. It's the politicians (who mostly have mistresses & still want to keep their wives) who don't want divorce. This is the reason why divorce is still not legal in the Philippines. Sadly, not many people have economic means to run for election against long-standing anti-divorce political dynasties. The rich always get their way because of this.

If Filipino couple wants to get married and is considering divorce in the future, its better to get married in other countries than in the Philippines. Divorce is illegal and annulment is expensive and take years or decades before legally annulled. If an individual wants to avoid all the hassle, don't get married in the Philippines.

It’s sad it’s not even available for the abused in our own country. The Filipino Catholic Church’s ancient laws has really poisoned us - even the other Catholic countries have divorce as a protection for citizens.

Especially here in our country because of the strong religious beliefs. I wanted to make divorce as legal because I've seen many family are broken but can't live with their new lover because of the law. They are hoping to find the person that could give them the right needs. I hope our country will give them the opportunity to have a new life and broke the marriage that didnt last

Would you stay because marriage is sacred even your husband abuses you and threatening you to be killed by his hands? Now, tell if your sacred marriage will save the life and love that doesn't exist anymore. Would you stay and still love your lover when you know that he have another women multiple times because marriage is sacred and forgiveness will always be rise . Well, fuck it up, My mother and my father deserve to be divorce because why? My father hurt us and we can't fucking leave the house because we dont have the law of legality of divorce. My mother always pray to cut ties with my father because they have obligations to us that must stay together even they dont fucking like each other anymoreeee.

Just because people are married doesn't automatically make them "Happily" married. Those are two entirely different things. That's the big difference there that the Filipino government fails to acknowledge. Not all married couples are happy just because they are married.

@Airbus A380-800 How original, trying to use the "Who hurt you" line because you refuse to see modern day marriage for what it is, a scam. Please come back with more original material. Marriage today is far from the fairy tail that you imagine it to be in your head. But that's your thing if you want to blindly follow the corrupt church's rules set up to oppress women in The Philippines, and give dirtbag men a pass to be horrible husbands. I refuse to live my life without questioning an institution that creates its rules based on a book written centuries ago, which is no longer relevant and useful in this day and age. I am happily divorced by the way, and I haven't been this happy in a long time. Keep it going though, this is a fun internet argument.

Philippine law allows for the termination of marriage, or accurately the declaration of nullity of marriage (as if there was no marriage to begin with), on the ground of "psychological incapacity" (Article 36, Family Code). But it requires going to court (which is expensive), and two, requires the diagnosis of a personality disorder that makes either party incapable of performing "essential marital obligations". So, psychological incapacity cases reaching the Supreme Court include juicy details or dirty laundry of the marriage (see Chi Ming Tsoi vs. Court of Appeals for an example). Disclaimer: For info purposes only, not legal advice.

For me open minded naman ang mga pinoy, sadyang mas matimbang sa higit na nakakarami ang possible negative effects of divorce. Hanggang maaari ay iniiwasan natin ang broken family dahil mas matimbang ang kapakanan ng bata. Even if divorce became legal i think Filipino will not discriminate divorced marriage. We already used to word "Hiwalay" or Separated. We tends to be more empathetic in others kids that came from broken family. Even 2decades before almost everyone have seen the negative effect of broken family in our friends, classmates and neighbors in our grade schools. We seen how they gone through those wort situation.

I consider Filipinos to be less traditional and less religious now than ever. We are more practical and open minded about family issues. We hate to have broken family but we hate more if someone abandoned their family because we are way more emphatic to kids and spouse that left behind.

They should allow it, anywhere ... even in the Philippines God is Love, but when the love is gone ... Divorce is not something you want, not for you and not for any children... but sometimes it is necessary, necessary to get a life again, peace, security, a second chance at happiness and a future for the children... make it possible, it's about time to change to the needs, they need it there ...

@rgx420s

@La dolce Vita But why would a strong independent man give a shit about cultural perception, or what anyone else thinks. If he is living his life happily not being married, and being the best version of himself he can possibly be, who cares? Society's perception doesn't mean anything as long a man can look in the mirror and confidently know that he is far from "Pathetic" to not give into the government & church scam that is marriage nowadays.
@im19ice3
@im19ice3 2 жыл бұрын
sadly i might be asking for too much but i'm of the opinion that marital abuse should actually spped up the divorce process, being kicked out is only marginally better in that it is indirect risk of death rather than withstanding the physical violence as an ongoing threat to a womans life but indeed women would have to be considered people rather than possesions for their life to be considered ''worth ensuring''.

In addition to this, why even start a family in the Philippines when one or both parents are going to be OFW's, and not even around to raise the kid(s)? That in itself is a great disservice to the children not to have both parents present to raise them. It is also more of a financial burden as well.

@@gamer242mooo So why complicate the situation by having kid(s) you will basically abandon to work in another country? How does OFW's having kids and not raising them benefit the child and the marriage? You saw in the beginning of the video she was cheated on while abroad. Marriage is just a fairly tale that the church and Disney sold all of you. If the church really cared about helping people and not money, annulments would be FREE or affordable to ALL Filipinos. But they don't want to lose their cash cow.
