How you can BREAK 80 without hitting a shot over 200 Yards!

For many Golfers, the Driver is the most difficult club to hit consistently, often leading to mistakes and unwanted penalties. For the average Golfer trying to Break 80, taking 3 off the tee or attempting ‘hero shots’ to get out of trouble does not allow us to play our best Golf.
The simple solution? Take the driver out of your Golf bag and learn how to navigate the course without it.
In recent months, I have experimented with this idea and have found an accelerated improvement in my course management and understanding of the landscape.
I hope this video gives you the inspiration to do the same! Let me know how you get on or if you’ve had a similar experience!

Depending on the width of the fairway, the dangers it presents is what depends if the driver stays in the bag.

In Australia we typically use metres. I tend to hit my driver about 220-230m which is like roughly 240 yards. Issue is, it’s consistent at the driving range but inconsistent on the course. This video is definitely making me reconsider how I approach golf. And hopefully, results will show! Thanks Sam

I’m glad mate! Trying this out has given me a whole different outlook on how I play the game… is the risk worth the reward at time? Probably not.

In the 90's golf mad Hollywood producer and screenwriter Michael Laughlin wrote a book called radical golf. He stated that anyone currently shooting in the 90's , could consistently shoot in the 70's. He said play short with a 3i or 4i off the tee (now you can also of course use 3 or 4 hybrid) then avoid all hazards by playing in front of the green. Use your time to practice lag putting and get good with your wedge. He said your 3rd shot on a par 4 or your second shot on a par 3 and your 3rd and 4th shots on a par 5 were the most IMPORTANT shots for the radical golfer. Even if your 1st and 2nd shots were just functional you always left yourself with these IMPORTANT shots and most often with a short iron or wedge. Your video reminds me very much of his philosophy. 180 190 yards off the tee, then another iron , chip or pitch always giving yourself a putt for par. He said Driver off the tee and 3 or 5 wood off the fairway will send your scores soaring. So why don't hcp golfers play this way. Because they give in to urges , peer pressure and fail to maintain believe and discipline. I have noted that NR's from single digit hcp golfers come from Driver off the tee or going for the green with the second shot or first shot on a par 3 . And I've seen scratch and close to scratch golfers hit OB even on the very first tee. If this happens to them, then its more likely to happen to you.

Really enjoyed the video Sam. Very much working on this aspect. I play at a club where I rarely used driver till the 8th. Have reengineered top end of my bag and bought mini driver and 7 wood (21 degrees). My four iron is a Ping g crossover at 24 degrees. As the wind plays a part from 8 onwards and some quite long par 4 not sure whether to put 21 degree crossover in and turn the 7 wood down or leave it at 21 and throw in my two iron at 18 degree . It’s all about options, when it gets wetter again will put 5 wood back in and 4 hybrid as the change in Run is dramatic like inland links

Love it! Thanks for the detail in your comment… I’m loving the variation from each person. My 2 iron is en route, very excited about using that so I don’t even need to think about a Driver for most holes! 😊

I also wanted to say that you seemed pretty calm and enjoying your golf. I know how hard it is to not get down when you three-putt or flub a chip, but also that it doesn’t help our games!

I play in two totally different locales. During the summer, I’m mostly in the mountains playing a course at 6500’ elevation with warm (70-90 degrees F) temps and very dry conditions; the rest of the year I play in San Francisco where it is mostly cool (40-55 degrees) with high humidity, often heavy fog and the ball just doesn’t fly well. I will run through several clubs average carry distance at the two different places: (first in SF and second in the mountains) PW: 125yds 140 7-iron: 155yds 170 5-iron: 175yds 195 3-hyb: 210yds 235 Driver: 250yds 285 (I feel comfortable hitting my driver over a bunker which is 275yds carry) Honestly around the SF Bay Area the temps and humidity are pretty variable and I feel like I have to do calculus to guesstimate my carry distance when I’m not playing either in the fog by the ocean or in the mountains. By the way, one of your recent videos taught me “Haar” - I have some Scottish relatives (in Glasgow) and had never heard that. We call the fog in SF “Karl”!

@@SamKingGolf I played in Ireland last year in May when it was 50-60 degrees with pretty dry conditions and my irons were maybe 5 yards more carry than when it is foggy in SF; I think by the end of the trip I was carrying my driver 260+ pretty confidently. I haven’t played in Scotland in almost 20 years (very unfortunate), but I suspect it would be similar. Check out next time the Haar is really heavy and I bet your ball flies shorter than normal. I actually play a different ball in the regular cold and moist climate here because I find that a high compression ball doesn’t fly as well. I really think I hit a Bridgestone Tour BXS (65 compression) further than a Pro-V1 (100 compression) in those conditions; and hit the Pro-V1 further in the warm, high altitude air.

I thought about getting a driving iron, cause if I can get out to about 235-245 and be on the fairway I'd do so much better. My driver is 275-300 but all over. 5 iron at 205 yards isn't enough to be able to have a lower club on approach. But I did only play 5 iron as my highest club once and shot a 42 on 9 holes

When my driver is bad or it's windy, I use my 3 iron off the tee that's my 215 club Can still get around most courses without a driver. I just have longer shots into the greens, but beats the dredded 3 of the tee when I smash driver OB 😂

The 200 club for me was just the zone where the fairway was wide but I could still get it far enough down there to have a chance. It could be 160, 180 etc… just whatever you think is gonna keep you in play!

I am in the same boat. Driver 180 max. Next best club is 6i at 130 max. Very rarely will I hit both driver and 6i max distances on the same hole. On a par 4 hole, proximity to the hole on my 3rd shot is make or break for bogey or double.

5 wood , easy peasy to hit and even a slow swing with good connection will carry 180 and run to 190-200 . 3 woods are tough always Drivers are tough to control Hybrids are tough past 175 5 woods are sooo easy

I just don't see how you can do it unless it's an extremely short course. I'm in the category of being a short hitter, most of the holes at my club I can't reach in regulation. You would have to have an insane short game where you your third shot on par 4s would have to be stuck very close to the pin. I find it hard enough to break 90 with short hitting I just think breaking 80 would be nigh on impossible
@SamKingGolf

I wouldn’t do it if the driver wasn’t an issue for my game. I have a decent round with my driver 1 every 5 rounds… the other rounds I’m hitting OB, putting myself in poor positions etc… so I opt to keep the ball in play and give my self a fighting chance!
