Hi Taren, I tried many ‘how to’s on the flip turn and failed till tonight when I used your technique😊 If I may, I’d add that complete flip turn beginners could do the first attempts with flippers - worked for me! Your little dolphin kick is the key that got me there! Many thanks indeed👍👍

Well, no triathelon for me as I never liked running. Curious though, when in the pool, are you just training swimming, or you go for times in your trithelelon? Turns in the pool for training aren't really critical, unless you are going for times. With the Kayak turn, if you are going for time, you need to push off and go under at least 2 feet or so to get under the back wash/water that follows you into the wall. Makes a big difference. Other than that, does any one do the old school over arm side stroke? While not quite as fast as freestyle (only record for side stroke was 1:02.5 for 100 yards, set in 1895, when the freestyle record was 1:01.2). Far faster than breast stroke, and equal to back stroke or fly, or at least very close... Most efficient stroke I have found in terms of distance covered per stroke, and energy expended.... Long axis stroke, flip turns....

Well, a few more observations..... I have watched at least 50 different flip turn videos. Yours is the only one that mentions the little dolphin kick to help accelerate the flip turn. So, next day in the pool, I try it. I do it a couple of times then try to switch back to the old way where I didn't do it, and found out I couldn't go back to the old way without really concentrating on it. So, I commented on this aspect to the life guards and coaches, and they all gave me that look of 'you didn't know that?' Learned a trick that every one 'knows' from a triathlete..... One other thing is that you don't use your arms to help with the rotation. Had a lap pal (a palindrome if you are into that...) tell me about it when I started learning them. So, before your feet are on the wall, and your hands are still at your side, palms towards the tummy side, to an extended bicep curl to over the top of your head. This still puts your arms straight out in front of you. All of the elite swimmers do this to greater or lesser extent, and if you watch for it, you will see it. Some mention it casually and the move for them, at 'master; level is very subtle. Oh, you mention about how cold it is in winter there in Winnipeg. Now, I have been there in the middle of winter, and know you don't consider it cold until it is 20 to 40 below 0 F......

@robohippy
@robohippy 4 жыл бұрын
@@Jeph629 The best one ever was a coach who said it is a wasted motion. I commented 'how come the swimmer in your video does that?' he never responded. I have heard the same thing mentioned about using your arms to help speed up your flip turn.... Really bummed that the pools are closed down. Spending a lot of time on my bike and hiking the hills because my quads really need some work... Just a swimmer, not a triathlete...

For an open turn, I try to keep the same timing as when I'm breathing during a normal stroke: 1. Touch the wall with leading hand (turn body more on side than normal) - Keep trailing hand behind you In the following steps, keep the body facing the side wall... 2. Push off wall with leading hand to rotate body away from wall (keeping head close to water) - While pulling your feet toward your body in preparation for the push off (this also helps with rotating the body) - Your momentum helps rotate your lower body as you push your upper body away from the wall 3. During the hand push off, take breath and quickly take leading hand over your head as if you are recovering from a stroke (away from the wall) 4. Now both hands are in front of you and your feet are on the wall 5. Push off wall with both feet, rotating to face the bottom and continue stroking. Done correctly, this turn simulates 2 strokes and uses about the same amount of time used to take a breath during a regular stroke.

Another option is to use a nose clip when you start out. Some folks prefer to use them on flip turns to onto your back for back crawl. I started out learning to do the flip turns using a nose clip. Once I got the body positions and speed right. I weaned myself off the nose clips. Hope this helps.

Kinda disagree about the value of flip turns for open water swimmers (2:45). Getting to the point of making them effortless and without much thought, you get more continuity in the swim -- a continuous flow. This then helps keep the flow as you swim continuously.

Practice breathing out air through your nose underwater throughout the flip turn. If you are blowing bubbles/air as you turn, that keeps the water from entering the nose during the turn. Another option is using a nose clip especially when doing a bucket turn. Like when you go from front crawl, flip at the wall, to a backstroke with underwater dolphin kicks on your back. I love doing flip turns and take time to practice them all each workout.

5:26 Key word :"tuck"---typical beginner mistake is to bring the legs over in pike. Don't do that! Also, no breath-holding unless a head full of water is your 'thing': exhale slowly through your nose through the turn. And don't breathe off the wall*, i.e.-you don't need that first breath and will only slow you down. Keep your head down and restart your normal breathing pattern after two strokes. (Anyone who has ever lost an event by less than 0.1 wishes they'd done this!). [*Don't breathe into a finish either, but that's a different video]

if you train in pool with water level poll deck edge then it might be scary, and I´ve had few bad turns in those kind of pools. (you are more likely to hit bottom of your feet then your achileas) It is better to practice turns in pool with high pool deck edge. There is no chance for you hitting the edge of the pool while flipturning in those. Pracitce just regular body rolls in the middle of the lane floating still. if you can do those then start swimming and make the body roll in speed farther from the wall Then try body roll with gentle kick/push of, farther from the wall Then work your way closer to the wall and test distances for planting your feet To overcome dizzyness you should approach it like if you are on rollercoaster if you focus on environment around you spinning and flipping you will be dizzy. if you focus only on few points then you still be dizzy but way less :) In the1. stage focus your sight on bottom of the pool in the stage 2 middle if the roll (tucking your chin) focus on your legs/knees, in the 3rd stage pushing of the wall turn your head to the side it will help you rotate faster into the freestyle position

I get dizzy too - Went to the doctor and found if you have had a recent bout of vertigo (I did a year ago) or even if you get motion sick easily this can trigger nausea. BUT the taught push off Taren shows is super effective and as he points out, no worries for the triathlete if flip turns arent a strong suit. Still, I’m curious to see if one day this nausea goes away.

frankly idisagree. if you touch the wall everytime you do a lap you decelerate. you waste a lot energy accelerating again. you can use walls to accelerate and/or rest you train the body to move faster through water and make the strokes you take out of the wall more efficient. flip turns are imperative for any lap swimmer looking to move fast through the water in freestyle or backstroke.
