I found this video to be the most useful tool to teach a beginner (me) how to do a flip turn. I watched the video several times, practiced the flips and came back to review the video even more. Just practice, persevere and it will come, it happened to me. Good luck

I have seen about a dozen videos on flip turns for beginners but this one helped me the most. This is excellent advice and after listening to it I was able to learn it and did 80 flip turns in my last 2KM swim. Thanks so much for a great video.

I usually do 1 breath for every 3 strokes when I do the front crawl. By the end, I'm almost all out of air. I need a full breath before I do the flip turn also so I can breath out through my nose when I'm upside down. I usually use the entire breath doing the flip turn. I noticed you said don't look up, but is it ok to take a side breath like normal just before going into the turn? Otherwise, I don't know how I can have enough breath to just keep going and then flip.

In a competitive environment, the coach wouldn't want you to breath the stroke prior to the turn or the first stroke coming out of the turn. However, if you're swimming laps for exercise, taking a side breath just before going into the flip is fine. On the other hand, lifting your head up just prior to the turn kills all your momentum and makes it harder to flip. In general, make sure that you are exhaling enough prior to taking your side- breath. If you are getting consistent breaths, you shouldn't feel like you're almost out of air at the end of each length. Good luck!

Great vid! Thanks. Only one thing was missing: You forgot to mention that we should be kicking during the corkscrew-to-swim-position. Thank you for making all the steps clear. I think I'm starting too early (fear of the wall) and not getting the most out of the push-off. I'll be working on that! Any tips on how to overcome the fear of hitting my head or heels? I've had it all my life and was in swim team, etc. I felt too silly to get help for it from my coaches when I was younger and more or less faked my way through turns, but now I'd really like to conquer it.

+Leananshae - While I've hit my head on backstroke a few times, I haven't on freestyle. It sounds like you've done a fair amount of swimming. The fact that you've probably done hundreds if not thousands of turns without hitting your head should give you confidence. Be aware of where you are in the pool, focus on the visual cues around you (i.e. the line on the bottom, the + at the end). Make sure you have good goggles and clear the fog regularly. As for hitting your heels, that is generally due to rushing and trying to push off or extend your legs before you've completed the flip. Flip first, find the wall with your feet, then push off. If you start to push off or extend while your feet are in the air, that's where you can run into problems. Break the turn down into smaller steps, and don't worry about speed initially. Take your time, but practice on a regular basis. Good luck!

+Leananshae - The main thing is to find goggles that fit. This video provides my two cents on the subject (kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWTbmHuAZrSWetFk). Finding a place where you can try on some goggles would be best, but here are a few online places that you could look. (www.swimoutlet.com/, www.kiefer.com, www.tyr.com, www.speedousa.com/goggles) I'd stay away from "swedish" style goggles. They don't have a soft plastic seal and only work for certain people.

I think it is natural to want to take your head out of the water right before the turn to get a good breath of air. Maybe that goes away as you get more experience and speed in doing the flip?

Keep working at it. If you exhale steadily out your nose during the flip, water won't go up. Break the turn down into smaller steps. Don't worry about the push-off until you are comfortable flipping and finding the wall with your feet.

+Sam S. - You're always going to get some water in you ears. While I occasionally get the sensation that water is running into my ear when swimming, it probably has more to due with my sinuses than my swimming form. Without being able to view your flip-turn, it's difficult to truly evaluate. If you come out of your tuck too early, that could send you deeper and put more pressure on your ears. Also, twisting back to your stomach before your feet hit the wall could put you at an odd angle in the water. If it's bothersome, I'd suggest using a swimming cap, earplugs, or both.

Rosy 7 You may not be tucking up tight enough, or you may be coming out of your tuck too soon. If you come out of your tuck too soon, the weight of your legs will force you deeper. Also, you're more likely to sink deeper the slower you flip. Practice some flips away from the wall and concentrate on quicker, tighter flips.

I practiced flip turns after watching some videos. One thing none of them mentioned was how exhausting the turn was, and how hard it was as a beginner swimmer to continue swimming after executing one. Any tips?

If you're used to doing open turns, you are in the habit of getting a breath on the turn. With flip turns, you're getting a breath before the turn and then not again until after you've completed the turn. This will take some time to get used to. While you do want to hum some bubbles out your nose while completing the flip, try not to let all the air out of your lungs while flipping. As you get better at the flip turn, you'll be able to do it faster. Therefore, you won't be going so long between breaths. Work up to utilizing the flip turn on every turn. As you are practicing, try using the flip turn every 4th turn, then every 3rd turn, then every 2nd turn, etc. Good luck!

Thank you for your advice, Chris! I actually did about five successfully today. Your comment about breathing really helped, I had been holding my breath once I got near the T. This time I took one more breath even at the T and also right after turning and it really made a difference! Your previous note about being six foot and starting the turn further away, but shorter people may need to come closer to the wall also helped. I pretty much did all flips on my last swim 🤗. Thank you! Granted, I still use a pull buoy. It was 15 minutes of continuous swimming then the buoy fell out, and then another 20 minutes. Some changes I made: if I haven't taken a breath by the time I see the T, I take one more, and also right after the flip. As far as timing for the flip, I just started waiting till I touch the wall with the back of my fingers on the last stroke, then flip (I'm 5'5"/165cm tall, female). Not all flips were perfect but I just kept on swimming. Thank you again, Chris!

If bubbles or air is coming out of you nose, water won't go up. Hum steadily or exhale steadily out your nose as you are completing the flip. While you might feel like you're running out of air initially, this will become second nature as you get better and faster at the flip.

Try "clearing" your ears (equalizing the pressure) when you first get in the water, or you could try ear plugs. It could be a sinus issue unrelated to doing the flip turn.

If you untuck too early (i.e. before your legs come over the top), this will drive your head deeper and make it difficult to complete the flip. You want to carry your speed into the flip. If you stop or look up prior to flipping, you'll lose all your momentum, and this will make it difficult to complete the flip. You can use your arms to help complete the flip. Just as you are tucking into the flip, push the water from your hips over the top of your head. I mention this briefly when doing the standing flips in the video. This Ryan Lochte video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/jGWop6Bnp753kMU) has some nice under water views. Watch what his hands do during the flip. I hope this helps. Good luck!

If you're just swimming for exercise/recreation, you don't need to follow those guidelines. With beginners, I emphasize not taking a heads up breath or looking up for the wall right before the turn, because it stalls/ruins all your momentum and makes it more difficult to complete the flip.

You may be rushing and trying to push/twist off the wall before you've truly completed the flip. On the other hand, some beginners flip so slowly, that they end up bailing out and tipping to one side or the other. Try to carry good speed into the flip. Keep working at it!

The general rule of thumb is that you start the flip when you an arm's length away from the wall. The flip takes the place of an arm stroke. With that in mind, swim at normal speed towards the wall being mindful of where you are as you take that final stroke and touch the wall. This will give you an idea of where you should start your turn. Use in water cues to gauge your distance between yourself and the wall.

Make sure to practice the flips by themselves (i.e. away from the wall) until you are flipping consistently. The slower you flip, the more prone you are to tumbling sideways, so try to maintain your swimming speed or momentum into the flip turn. Don't uncurl too early. Keep your chin tucked throughout the flip. Keep working at it. Check out some other flip turn videos. Maybe another video/instructor's description will "click" with you. Good luck!

If you're in a good tuck, you're more likely to scrape your back or your butt on the wall if you are too close to the wall. Coming out of your tuck too early (trying to push off the wall while your legs are still in the air) is what would cause you to hit your heels.

You might need to speed up the flip some. The longer that it takes you to complete the flip the more likely you are to feel like you running short of air and unconsciously stop exhaling out your nose.
