If you look into the yakuza, you'll actually see that they do a lot of public aide, especially in crisises. Having some form of favor with the public can actually go a long way for criminal organizations. Iirc you also saw this with al capon's gang as well.

This is a extremely great video. Most thieves guild videos out there keep focusing on "oh build the face of the guild and a lieutenant" without actually going into the nitty gritty of how and why a thieves guild rises to power

Another good example of criminal organizations cooperating with government is in WW2. We don’t learn about it in history classes, but there was a very substantial population in the US who were Nazi sympathizers who wanted the US to join the axis instead. When the US entered the war a lot of them shut the fuck up and acted like they weren’t Nazis, but a LOT of them didn’t. There were very real concerns about sabotage and espionage. At that time the mafia was deeply involved in shipping and most major docks and shipyards were mafia hot beds, and there happened to be a powerful Jewish continent in that mafia. They cut a deal with the government and worked directly with military intelligence to find and destroy Nazi spy rings using their mafia connections. In fact Meyer Lansky (known as THE accountant for the mob) organized a brutally effective crackdown that actually ended public pro-Nazi demonstrations on the east coast. Every time the Bund guys showed up there were mafia thugs waiting to break their legs.

@@lordtea7688 look up his Wikipedia articles WW2 involvement section. Meyer is pretty famous lol Behind the bastards also did an episode on the fascists who he beat up which is how I learned about him.

This is a really good and useful video! Hadn’t really thought about organized crime in my worldbuilding yet, but now I have an excellent reason to do so!

Same happened to me. I’m curious what videos we both watched that lead The Algorithm™️ to recommend this. Solid video! If you’re open to super minor critiques, I think the video could be improved by refining your audio a bit. Cut out your breaths, leave a little space between stopping one sentence and starting another, cut out the “Ums,” “Ahs,” and phrases like “or something,” “Ya know,” “So…,” etc. You’re doing great work and making great points, which is the thing most video essayists on KZbin suck at. Just polish up the video/audio and I’m sure you’ll do great!

@@jacksmith8299 Super minor? I am open to any criticism as long as it's logical. I know the audio quality is not the best, the quirks of a begginer youtuber :) I actually used less of those phrases in my previous videos but i try to be more "human" when speaking, people tend to make videos in a certain way as if this is some kind of school presentation. Here i tried to talk to You - the viewer as a normal human being not a college essayist

In my campaign worlds I never make a simple Thieves or Assassins guild. I have a clan, gang, syndicate, mafia, family, warlord, tribe, cartel, mob, guild, cabal, ring, cult, and such. Often this may exist within a feudal structure and there can be more than one overlapping feudal like structure, for example one around secular rule, one around religious rule, and one around economic rule which at times have all existed simultaneously in some societies. A thieves guild then would probably not call themselves a thieves guild, but they might be the strongest gang in control of an area or could be a collections of gangs which agree to work with each other in a feudalistic manner. Alternatively it could be a powerful and/or rich person or group of people who control most of the criminal activity in their area, a corrupt noble or merchant. It could even be the ruler of the whole kingdom who secretly or even openly supports thieves to prey upon some other kingdom, like some pirates/privateers. Such groups can be few in number if they have an effective monopoly on power, they can be many in number, they can be more or less organized, their level of violence can vary but violence normally results in violent reaction which could then give the background of a gang war going on or a war between the government and the criminal organizations which are too strong for the government to simply crush. History and modern times are full of great examples to pull from.

I disagree about the " there's no central criminal organisation with specific rules and goals" , case in point the " Mafia " , specifically the Italian Mafia is a ( mostly) centralised family based organisation, with rules ,taboos, rites and somewhat strict hierarchy ( from what I know the same can be said about the Russian mafia and the yakuza ). Also, as an organisation, it maintains its power by building trust and helping normal citizens and benefits from the citizens' lack of trust towards the centralised government. It's a sort of " culture inside a culture " and the " members are in the "know" and have a specific code of honour to enact ( doesn't mean that they're necessarily good, more of a lawful evil/neutral), on top of that, the group is very old, it literally showed up in the south of Italy while it was still under a feudal system, so it's perfect to base a "fantasy thief guild " on.
