Chinos are my favorite type of men’s pants. Why? Because they’re incredibly versatile. They’re like the Swiss Army knife of pants. Unlike jeans, they work for business casual outfits. And unlike dress pants, they work for casual outfits.
You can chinos them with dress shirts and Oxfords. You can wear them with t-shirts and sneakers or even sandals. If I could only choose one pair of pants to wear forever, it would hands down be a pair of chinos.
But just like any other pants, chinos won’t look good if they don’t fit properly. In this video, I’m going to explain exactly how a pair of chinos should fit. Of course: fit, or silhouette, is subject to trend. Sometimes skinny fit is in, and sometimes wider fits are al the rage.
I try to give you advice that will stand the test of time. So in this video, I’ll talk about a “timeless” chino fit that will look just as good 10 years from now as it did 10 years ago.

Brock i visit my tailor and tell him about my problems with pocket flare and tilted hip crunching and he say than often the problem is not too tight garment on hips but our posture and some disfunctions. I also find some good article about this there is some nice suggestions: ,(for me sizing up its never a solutions because always this kill my butt area) THE POCKET FLARE(and front wrinkles/crunching) are caused by an athletic seat (high, prominent glutes) and/or a tilted pelvis. Some guys have naturally strong seats and slightly tilted hips, which makes it difficult to achieve clean-looking pants off-the-rack. If you’re prone to these issues, you would benefit from bespoke trousers. As a cheaper alternative, seek out trousers that have set-forward or western-style pockets: if they’re not constructed on the side seam they will not pull open as easily. Most often, wrinkles under the front waistband are caused by a low stomach bulge, physically pushing down on the front of the waistband. A loose waistband will only accentuate these wrinkles - so have the waist taken-in so your trousers sit snugly in place.TILTED HIP “CRUNCHING This pooling of fabric around the upper thighs/crotch is another symptom of a tilted-back pelvis. It’s very difficult to get rid of this, so try avoiding it by finding a trouser that better suits your specific needs. In one case, I had a client/friend who was tired of this issue and asked his chiropractor about it. Apparently his posture was putting unhealthy pressure on his lower spine. He ended up solving all the issues above with some routine stretches and an exercise plan that focused on straightening and strengthening the lower spine and pelvis. He’s never felt more athletic and energized, and his pants have never looked so good.

Hi Brock I agree with a lot of your fit principles. It pains me to think I wore straight fit chinos with large leg openings for so many years - classic docker type pants. Have you tried the J crew 250 skinny chinos? They're my favorite chinos on the market, but there still a lot of brands I haven't tried. I'm pretty slim and these are great. I just wish they weren't low rise. Why do you think everyone makes their chinos low rise? It's so unflattering, causes the shirt to untuck, and low rise is not comfortable in my opinion.

Neither slim nor skinny, the ideal chinos for me will always be those with a regular cut, with a comfortable waist, not at all short or tight and ending in a customized ankle.

The issue with hemming your pants is that the leg opening also gets bigger the higher you hemm them. So with most pants that I get hemmed I also need to get them tapered at the ankle by my tailor which is more expensive

Good points, flex fit materials for chinos really are a game changer that allow great comfit with a slim and tailored fit. One reasonable argument about the cuffed pants is they make your legs look shorter and childish. There is a visual connotation that cuffed pants make a person look like a kid. (and there's the whole bi-sexual thing) In a similar vein how a grown man wearing shorts looks childish. Yes, wear whatever you want to wear, but it won't change that visual language on how things are perceived.

Hey brock have you ever tried the uniqlo ankle pants? I recently bought a pair and I finally know now why they are popular. They a have great fit and feeling plus i didn't need hem them in the uniqlo store, they fit off the rack. Also i agree with you, my favorite current pants are the uniqlo ultra stretch skinny fit chinos and they are so comfortable and pratical. Unfortunately they haven't restock here in the philippines.

You can't effectively shop for differently rises though, I don't know why you talk about it as if this is just another sizing thing like waist or taper. All the main brands only sell mid-rise chinos and the filters for "low-rise" or "high-rise" on major brands or department stores tend to be inaccurate or not available. On 99% of websites, a product page will simply say "sits comfortably just below the waist" which is the codeword for "mid-rise". I only run into low rise jeans and chinos when I venture in more desinger-y brands, and it is usually a surprise.

Yes, but I think there's more variety in how jeans fit these days, so you can definitely get away with different silhouettes. Since chinos are often worn as business casual, it doesn't make sense to stray too far from the "timeless" fit.

I disagree with mid/high rise making legs looking longer. As a short guy (5’5”) I have sagged my pants all thru high school and into my 20s/early30s and until I wore any low rise pants and wore them properly, and with the right length top, I look much taller than I appear. But I think it has more to do with the length of your top versus the rise of your pants. Just don’t sag! lol And this is coming from a short guy that has become extremely meticulous with pants shopping. Low rise all the way! Which has been a scarcity.

The best rise for you really depends on your body proportions. For instance, I'm 5'6" but I have long legs and a very short torso for my build. So, I go with a lower rise for most pants but for dress pants I go more mid-rise.

The idea is to help your figure, not to reproduce it.” -Bruce Boyer I would add that sometimes going after an effect doesn’t always “help your figure,” but that’s OK. The effect one is after is influenced by several factors: shoes, shirt, jacket, drape, environment, silhouette, and so forth. Men’s clothing was idiotic in the ~2008-2020 timeframe because everyone talked about fit without reference to an overall effect. Fit just meant “slim and tapered” too much of the time.

Well said. Although I don't think talking about fit in the #menswear era was "idiotic" even it seems narrow minded in hindsight. Back then, there was more agreement about what "proper" fit is. These days, anything goes. But I still think there is such a thing as a middle-of-the-road fit that stands the test of time (to a certain point).

Do you imply "on trend" with "looking good"? I had this feeling already in a previous video. I think this discussion about timelessness is a bit superficial. Every style has its connotations and periods when it's trending and when not. Rather than calling something timeless you should just be comfortable with the fact that your personal style, i. e. your capsule wardrobe, the pieces you like most, you were the most often, will sometimes and sometimes not coincide with trends.

No, I don’t think being on trend means looking good. If you listen to the way I talk about trends, fit and wardrobe building, I think you’ll see that I mostly agree with your assessment of “timelessness”. But I don’t agree that each style is distinct. Things like silhouette exist along a spectrum, and trends swing back and forth like a pendulum. The middle of the spectrum will always be the most “timeless” (i.e., least likely to look outdated).

IMO cotton with 2% stretch (elastane) is perfect. It has a little give but still looks/feels/sounds like cotton.

Dude, hi rise pants on a low rise size guy look horrible and should not be purchased. You will have a ton of fabric at your crotch and the belt will not fit on the waist line where you wear your belt. Get the rise tailored to fit.
