Great points and a really nice video. Just bought my first bolt action rifle and i bought the Howa 1500 in 308cal. Fun fact: In Sweden the Howa costs $1071 and the Weatherby Vanguard is $697! A gun salesman told me that if he was to choose between a used Howa and a new Vanguard he would take the Howa. We also spoke about the 700 and his opinion was that only reason to choose the 700 instead of the Howa 1500 was the huge amount of aftermarket parts.

Good recommendation and video, If I remember my firearm history Howa made actions for other manufactures for decades. Weatherby, Sako and others. While looking similar to the Remington 700 action it is not, and I believe the action and bolt design is Sako. On the subject of the Remington 700, I purchased one about 5 years ago, the rifle is very good, but the trigger was horrible, but it's adjustable so I bought the rifle. When I tried "adjusting" the rigger, the adjustment screw made very little change in the weight, and the miles of creep remained. Mr Timney came to the rescue and I still use it and it's ok. Would I buy another, hell no. Not long after that I bought I Weatherby Vanguard aka Howa 1500, well talk about chalk and cheese, cloverleaf groups right out of the box and a trigger that was adjustable, and is crisp as they come. Not long after that Weatherby had a sale, and another one followed me home, dammed if I know where that came from. But I agree with all you say, there are lots of very good rifles out there, I love the Browning A-Bolt 2 and the Ruger American rifles, but the Howa/Vanguard actions are very good and would not hesitate to buy another.

The Howa was originally an exact clone of the Sako rifle Howa produced, the Sako FinnBear, its what ended the Deal with Sako as Howa were not meant to do an exact copy. But over the years Howa has improved & upgraded the design & added the best designs from other manufactures, like M16 style extractor & a better ejector. Todays Howa still resembles the Sako rifles, like the flat bottom & integral recoil lug, plus many other parts.

A Howa barreled action has a nice trigger, it's smooth accurate and uses high quality steel with different calibers, profiles and lengths plus it uses a CHF barrel it's made in the same plant that makes Japanese millitary assult rifles it's used by the armed Japanese Police, the JSDF and other small police and millitary around the world use it as it's a solid rifle that's sold in most nations, just a decent bedded stock a decent optic and if you want a 10 round mag kit that is not expensive and mags are cheap and good. Howa used to make Arisakas also. Very good quality steel. 3 action sizes but I wish they had 6.5 swede and 7mm Mauser. They have 7.62x39 on the mini action. 6.5 creedmore on the mid. But they do lack .388L on the large action. But have a weaker .338 .308 (they use EU spec so it's technically a 7.62x51 NATO chamber same with the 5.56 Also have threaded barrels now and short action calibers like .300 blackout

I find quality was built around the remington 700 bdl in stainless was superb quality at a low price with excellent trigger / accuracy from factory. I added the HS PRECISION composite stock ( impervious to the temperature/ humidity changes,fitting the hand perfectly and facilitating free floating barrel (user preference) using stainless Leupold scope mounts with 3x9 power zeiss scope made an excellent weather proof accurate rifle with no detachable mag to mess up in 3006 able to deal with up to deer size game at range up to 200 yrds it takes game when needed to protect livestock or from attacking game. I keep a bore sighting pocket sized tool to make sure it is on target before i take a shot so far zeiss scope has kept zero just fine taking game thru the heart first time it was taken out hunting. The weight of the rifle allows for accurate shooting instead of using the factory cheap stock that is not free floating and made for small hands was awkward but kept for others with small hands.

You should try dropping a long action Howa into a Sako L61R/AIII stock sometime. They are pretty much a drop in. The Howa is copied heavily from the Sako L61R owing to the fact that Howa was contracted by Sako to build parts for them back in the 60's and they copied the Sako and built the Dickson/Howa Golden Bear. Sako sued and Howa changed it a bit to become the Howa 1500. Weatherby started getting Howa to build the Vanguard about 1970.

I have a S&W 1500 and two Weatherby Vanguards (270 Winchester, 257 Weatherby Magnum and 270 Win Short Mag.). All of the Howa triggers I've seen have sucked to the nth degree. On the three I have I've replaced them with Timney triggers. Remington 700 triggers are vastly superior to stock Howa triggers. Aside from that I've had good results with the three Howa's I've owned and shot extensively. If I were to give advice to a new shooter It would be to buy a Ruger American and live happily ever after.
@Bullets4Bucks5 жыл бұрын
Ruger makes decent guns. I don't care for the stock on the Ruger American. I like the Howa 2 stage trigger and it's very easy to modify to lighter weight. The x mark pro trigger was impossible to modify and the adjustment didn't work in my experience. The Ruger American is a good shooting gun and very affordable.

Howa beat Remington at their own game. That game is providing accurate and quality made rifles at a reasonable cost. Honestly, everyone that’s familiar with Freedom Group’s track record knew that it was the beginning of the end when they got involved with Remington and Marlin. Everything that FG has ever touched has turned brown and stinks. I feel sorry for the Remington employees that have given a lifetime to building guns for an American company just to see it destroyed. I get no pleasure out of seeing American companies fail especially firearms manufacturers. It would be quite the dangerous thing for America to have to depend on foreign companies to supply their weapons. I own two Howas and both have had zero issues and shoot well considering their prices.Id much prefer they be an American owned and produced gun but Remington is a crapshoot, Winchester is foreign and priced at almost double the price, and the Ruger American, though it shoots well, looks and feels like garbage. I like the Hawkeye but it’s priced over a grand too. There’s just nothing in Howa’s price range that has forged steel receivers, good triggers,and quality barrels anymore. CZ used to be but their popularity has driven their prices way up from ten years ago. Still great guns but just not the good value that they used to be. I just don’t care for Savage rifles. It’s more of a styling issue than anything else.
@Bullets4Bucks4 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more. Be great if it was usa made. Ruger makes a great budget rifle even though I pick on them. Like you said though rough cheap Machining and cheap stocks. I like tikka but its not as well built a reciever I think which sparks a lot of debate.

Nailed it. I like the CZ. I am sure that Howa are good, but I like the CZ better. That Z manufacturer as well. I bought a brand new Interarms 30-06 years ago, about 1979 or 80. What a well made weapon. It was reasonably priced as well. I gave it to a relative and it still shoots well. I think it was either made by CZ or that other Slavic gun maker that starts with a Z.

I have a Howa 1500 and the one thing that I don't like about it is the long throat that Howa uses. A .100"+ bullet jump to the rifling is not conducive to good accuracy and I've tried too many different bullets and powders trying to find that good load but I've never been able to get more than about 1 MOA accuracy out of it. A lot of people would call that great but when I can get 1/4 MOA accuracy out of my Savages, I'm not satisfied with the Howa.

@@jn3750 ammunition, stock or chassis, trigger and so on all effect how accurate a person shoots a rifle. I've owned 4 howas 3 have produced .25 groups mulitply times with factory ammo. A couple many times. Howa has been around for a long time and has produced rifles for Sako and other manufacturers. Remington is not what it once was either. Sure they make some good models still, the 5r being one of them but lots of fish in the pond making good rifles.

Just buy a Bergara.. you get all the advantages of the 700 and a way better rifle from the get go. Get a HMR pro and it comes with a Trigger Tech diamond trigger.
@kevinsauer57945 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree. The model 700 is the benchmark for almost all precision rifles. There is a reason they are used by the military and millions of hunters throughout the U.S. But, everyone has their favorite for sure.
@HPAcustomriflesandcerakote4 жыл бұрын
The only reason the military uses the 700 is because its cheap, I was an infantry Marine and everything the military buys is lowest bider even when its absolute garbage. And 700 foot print basically means the bottom metal screws are space the same distance and remingtons cheap bottom metal they flooded the market with will work with that action, Round receivers with no bearing surface, like remingtons and savages along with pinned recoil lugs do not egual accuracey or durability. I also never cared for remingtons shorter than everyone else magazine well and ejection port. And i would say over the last 100 years of bench shooting there may have been more military mauser, commercial mauser and model 70 pre 64 (basically a winchester commercial mauser) may have been the heart of more bench rifles than the 700

@@Bullets4Bucks I've ordered a new stock as starters to tune up my .308 Howa 1500 and go from there. The thumb hole laminated stock is pretty but bulky. I've only had one rifle that I couldn't get to shoot sub-moas and that was a Sako and replaced everything but the action on it. Traded it for a Rem.700 HB varmint 22-250 that would shoot one hole out of the box.

They're beautiful rifles but I'll never own one. I'm a lefty so that's that. I used to get pissed about people not catering to lefties. Not any more. I got frustrated with Galco Holsters years ago so now I only order from Kramer or Milt Sparks. I pay more and wait longer but it's a better holster and I get what I want in the color I want. As far as rifles go for me Remington is dead so now it's Browning: The Best There Is. Simple as that.

You must be Howa's KZbin Marketing manager because it is obvious you have a infactuation with them. I have one it is a good rifle for the price point ,but you might want to look at Blaser, Steyr Pro. And gun that I like better that is in the same price point as the Howa is the Bergara B-14 HMR do a comparison on that gun we all know Remington is almost done.
@Bullets4Bucks4 жыл бұрын
I had a Bergara hmr it had mature accuracy issues. I saved for it for over a year. It ended up being a huge disappointment. Granted it was probably a one off lemon. I am sure most are good. I can't find Blaser or Steyr at a low enough cost but I would love to review them. lol I don't work for Howa. I do love Howa though admittedly.

Completely different price range. As for the how to make a Howa action like a Tikka, clean it properly, oil it down, little dab of moly grease on the cocking ramp and work it for a while. They are equal to Tikka once you break them in.

Accurizing and blueprinting.. a 700 all day long! No tolerances measured in this video which makes accuracy. No barrel quality analyzed, out of box accuracy. I mean it is a cursory look and it is what it is. I own 3 Howa's and 2 Rem700's and while I do chassis/stocks/barrels/triggers, if I were (I am) building precision rifles I would do a Rem 700 as the accurizing you can do is enormous. Saying this... going custom is the preferred way but still I would get everything checked by a gunsmithing machinist as you should be getting perfect machining, but who knows until it is checked.
