The soothsayer in this scene is actually my mom. Rhoda Levantis. She was not an actress. She was the switchboard operator at CFTO studios in Toronto where the movie was filmed. The director saw her in the lobby and went to the president of the studio and said she had to be in the movie. (I guess she looked like what he wanted for that extra part). That was her one and only acting job. But her picture was in a magazine(not sure what one it was) and she talked about it until she passed away in 2018. For me it’s nice to know her image will live on for years to come. 🥲

This is why the illegal downloading of copyrighted content, especially entertainment content, has not gone away and has only increased, though it does drive down the cost of streaming services to make those services a more attractive option (ease and convenience). It is necessary for consumers to be bombarded with content, images, ideas, distractions. If they are willing to pay for the distraction, all the better. But if they're not willing to pay directly, they still need to be encouraged to participate in the distractions. Consumers who download content "illegally" still pay. They pay for for computer hardware, some software (perhaps), a VPN service, etc. But they also pay by willingly being part of the distractions, desiring them. Perhaps this is the biggest price, to feel that one's desires are satiated to the point where there is little desire for political involvement. Does the oligarchy know the correct balance of "bread and circuses" to keep this ship of fools ambling on, or is the ship headed towards some kind of collision?

2:32 - 2:46 the most prophetic piece of scripted dialogue ever written in regards to media. This movie is a satire on tv broadcasting but I'll be damned if those words didn't come true in real life. Corporate media gives us our news and boy there's some politically biased shit being "peddled for truth" on their networks. Now we watch news with some caution and skepticism .....sad.
@Tripp19939 жыл бұрын
+ReeseMac Ain't that the goddamn truth in the whole godless world. That Paddy Chayefsky was a genius. The film is one of the greatest dystopian dramas ever, despite the fact that it's not a dystopian film.
@bigrobtheactor8 жыл бұрын
You're almost there. Don't blame the "corporate media" - they do what they are designed to do - deliver eye-balls to advertisers for profit - it's the individual choice made that does the damage, watching TV, making a life-style out of "boredom-killing" via passive, steady, all consuming "entertainment" addiction. It's us, not them.
@ReeseMac8 жыл бұрын
I'm directing my aim more so at the news. You can't not "blame the corporate media". It's like having a drug epidemic in your community and saying 'Don't blame the drug dealer or kingpin. Blame the addict.' They're misleading people with bias news thereby undermining the integrity of their own profession. A profession that once had greater integrity; it was more trustworthy in the past. People today have become more & more aware and are becoming less trustworthy of corporate news today. News should be objective. Not bias.
@bigrobtheactor8 жыл бұрын
The trouble with that line of thinking is it erroneously assumes that all "corporate media" act in concert which in fact they do not - if by "corporate media" you mean commercial news channels. In fact there are practically an infinite number of ever-changing and competing sources from every corner of the globe representing almost every point of view imaginable. There is no "they" in that sense. People, just like you and me choose to tune in to the sources they find most appealing and come out with basically what they went in for which in most cases is entertainment, some information, or as Beale says boredom killing. I don't think we need a "it's like" analogy, the subject is analyzable on its own. I get my news from a variety of competing and often conflicting channels forming my evolving opinions based on a number of factors. There is no conspiracy. There is a free-press, at least in most of the West. There is mostly chaos and conflict and confrontation as well as cooperation. People are responsible for their own choices and the outcomes. That's the point of his speech, If you don't want to be informed or told what to think exclusively by CNN or Fox or The New York Times they can go to RT or Al Jazeera or BBC or the Washington FreeBeacon, watch The News Hour or C-Span for informed discussion programs with experts that often disagree, or any number of a million other sources and channels and get the mix they look for from El Mundo to Ha'arretz to the Bangkok Post in a nearly endless, varied and always changing landscape, from the AP to Bloomberg to Reuters, I do it all the time so I think I know. Looking angrily for scapegoats is easy but fruitless, Beale is addressing the audience as free agents capable of making their own decisions. He's reminding them. That's his point, he's not blaming the "corporate media" or assuming people are powerless pawns being led around by powerful, evil, cooperating entities. It's a warning not to voluntarily surrender responsibility for your own mind. Thanks for reading. ;)
@ReeseMac8 жыл бұрын
bigrobtheactor Yes I am referring specifically to FOX News & MSNBC and , yes, I'm well aware and understand that aspect of his speech on audience culpability (It's very hard for anyone to miss) but just because I did not type a remark about that part doesn't mean that I didn't see it or understand it to the point where a KZbinr has to point it out to me as if I needed it broken down. So I am "there". I just didn't TYPE about audience culpability. I typed about what he said between 2:32 - 2:46 . How ironic that back then it seemed far fetched where as today it has unfortunately come to fruition. ((( My essential sentiment is--->There should be no news channels, especially those that claim to be "fair & balanced", presenting biased and propagandized news information to the public. It should be objective. You disagree with that?))))

In 1976, TV was the most important family member in most homes. We live now in an age where information is transmitted all over the world instantly. We're all zombies walking around, sitting around, even sleeping around with these pocket-sized devices churning out content nonstop. We can find art, life-changing inspiration, & wisdom with the swoosh of our fingertips. We can also find unhealthy ideas, immoral behaviors, & unimaginable fakery with equal ease. It's alarming how fast & loose we consume & share online material. With active systems relying more & more on AI, is scary to think how easily an irresponsible, careless, or evil user could create something online that could yield devastating results. How prescient this movie was.

When this movie came out in 1976, it was truly ahead of it's time. This is why the Late Great Peter Finch won the Oscar for "Best Leading Actor"(The first in Oscar history to win an award posthumously in an acting category), Faye Dunaway won for "Best Leading Actress", and another woman won for "Best Supporting Actress". Compared to how television was back then to how it is now, it was tame, especially with the Internet, so-called "reality TV", and other things, just imagine if "Howard Beale" was to come back today with one of his fire and brimstone "I told you so monologues", when you think about it, he proved his point by what I just said.
