Winter Schedule
Our schedule may vary, but expect a new video every Wednesday and Saturday at 11AM Central!
How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a KZbin channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

Dunno if it was ever explained, but corn fodder briefly skyrocketed in price early December 2019 here in SW WI. The fall again had been wet, so fodder wasn't getting baled. Then snow came late October. Anyone who had animals and needed fodder for bedding went into a bit of a panic. Rounds of fodder of any quality were selling over $70 at local hay sales. Snow melted and a LOT of fodder was made in the last half of December. I made 300 5.5x4 rounds for two neighbors. Now there's a glut. Had he made and sold those squares in October, he'd have easily gotten double. I watch the market reports, and the hay auction north of him supposedly didn't sell a single fodder bale on Wednesday. They have a very large quantity on hand. Just an explanation for those who commented that $25 a bale doesn't make much profit... It doesn't, but supply and demand is very fickle.

My overload springs are always hitting my stops on my work truck. 2017 Chevy 3500. had 3 yards of gravel in my bed then hooked up to a 24k rated trailer and loaded up some materials. Couple days later I decided to dump out the gravel and it was frozen 🤷‍♂️ lol. Had to get the backhoe and break it up. @farmerboybill
@farmerboybill 4 жыл бұрын
@@mfreund15448 It can be sold per ton, but fodder and straw is typically sold by the bale here. Those prices are per bale. Dunno why he drove so far to auction it off. I'm only about 15 minutes from him, and the local fodder prices started out very high because of bad weather. The weather straightened out and a lot got made. At the beginning of December (before his bales were made), fodder prices were around $70 per bale. This past week, the sale in the next town north of him had a lot of bales on hand, but didn't sell any because everyone now had what they need. If we end up with another cold wet spring, prices may go up again as the amount on hand gets used up. Supply and demand is fickle.

@chucklesx
@chucklesx 4 жыл бұрын
@J Hammer ... Sounds easy but once you start getting paid for the haulage then you have pay for commercial tax/rates, registration and insurance on the truck and have another trailer to pay for and all of a sudden you are looking for regular work to keep the truck busy all year to make it pay for its self. Its very easy to become a slave to it unless you want to employ a driver and even that opens up whole other bucket of costs, responsibilities and often hassel for a small business. Not saying its impossible to do but it is a big step to take.

There is a distance from home restriction for "farm" use and as soon as you accept payment for transporting goods belonging to someone else you incur the commercial transport fees and more onorus DOT requirements.
