You know how you sometimes have those words that you like, not because of the meaning, but because of the way they sound? Or the way they look when they're written?
These are our favorite Japanese words.
This whole video was pretty random and spur-of-the-moment (as most of my videos are). So. Yeah.
My favorite word: 最高
Rachel's favorite word: 救急車

Also, as you may have noticed from other videos, I've started posting this little 7 second clip at the end, advertising my comic books.

hahaha I was just thinking about this and came up with another favorite word the other day... Buuuut I already forgot it. It may have been the onomatopoeia potapota, which means a light drip of water, but I think it sounds like a chubby little piggy walking around.

I loved your blog about train etiquette. And that is what led me to Rachel & Jun, who are totally awesome, here on KZbin and then back around to your KZbin site. Funny little story, I noticed an older Japanese lady staring at 2 American women seated on a train the other day. I had to giggle inside, because before I read your blog, I had never actually noticed it. Anyway, my favorite Japanese word is douitashimashite. I don't get to use it often, but absolutely love how it sounds. Thanks for the fun videos, keep them coming!!!

That "saiko"/"psycho" misunderstanding reminds me of that Detective Conan story, where an American guy learned Japanese at a family's house with romaji. And the girl who takes care of him asks what he would like in a woman, to which he replies in English "a woman who shines". And as he leaves to go back to the US, he gives her a note in English that says "Shine", because she's the woman that shines in his life, and, sadly she takes it the wrong way and thinks he wants her to die.

LOL I finally understand what "Ku-ku-cha" means. It one of the many words that my Taiwanese grandmother (who grew up in the Japanese Era) sandwiches between the Taiwanese dialect. It's pretty common for the older generation in Taiwan to sprinkle in Japanese words in their everyday speech and/or pronounce the Kanji characters in the Taiwanese dialect. For example, Taiwanese people call the hospital "病院" (Kanji) and not 醫院 (Mandarin Chinese).

My favorite Japanese word (so far) is 割引券 (coupon). I just love how it rolls off the tongue, and it's so cute. I also like the phrase 私たちの町に, especially when you say it really fast, it's almost like a tongue twister. :p
@twix0rz

I always find it so cool how Kanji meaning is similar to Chinese meaning. Not sure if it is for all Kanji words though. Like 最高 means highest/tallest in Chinese and ambulance in Chinese is 救护车. 急 also means emergency quick in Chinese. But the pronunciation is way different. Haha. If I ever have time I would love to learn some Japanese or korean. Cute video you two!

I really love the sound of pretty much all words in Japanese and most of them are extremely pleasant or fun to say. One of my favorites is actually "boku", although I suppose I wouldn't be using it much since I'm female. I also love the words "hanabi", "jibun", and "kotoba". All simple and common, but I really like the simpler words and (for some reason) the "b" sound.

About the non seriousness of ambulance, how about ER? It's 救急救命室(kyuukyuukyuumeishitsu). That's one more kyuu :) As for my own favorite japanese, it's hard to tell, but I like the 4-character compound words that include a repetition of some sort, like 自問自答(jimonjitou, answering one's own question), 自業自得 (jigoujitoku, more or less what comes around comes around), 自作自演 (jisakujien, doing everything by oneself, or put-up job, or in the context of internet, sockpuppet), 一石二鳥 (issekinichou, kill two birds with one stone)...

saikou/psycho reminds me of this story that happened to two dear friends of mine (I've changed their names here). The story only works if you know some Spanish (and English), but it's pretty funny if you do. You need to know that Anna is fluent in Spanish, but Mike is just learning it. Anna and Mike are eating in a Mexican restaurant. Mike says something to the waiter in Spanish. Waiter:: ¿Hablas español? Mike: Un poco. Anna: Está aprendiendo. Waiter: Muy bién. (Waiter leaves the table.) Mike: Why did you just call me a 'pendejo'? Anna: I guess we need to work on vocabulary building.
