What a great channel and teacher. I'm just getting into my own car repairs/service and have a 2011 Rav. Have always been really intimidated by car repairs but this makes me feel like I can do my own transmission service. The Oil Filters on Ravs really had me intimidated until I watched videos too. Thanks so much

If you live in the rust belt area do not use a power tool to remove those pan bolts. The rust make it hard to remove plus they have locktite on them. What you see in the video is a rust free pan bolt which maybe ok but don't take the chance sine you can snap them very very easily. The pan bolts have a very fine thread and are not that strong. Use penetrating oil to free those pan bolts.

Very good summary and video. Couple of observations I would make. Get the torque spec for the pan bolts and tights to that. Use of threadlocker make this less of an issue for you but I would put torque spec ahead of using threadlocker. Never start bolts especially those 17 or whatever pan bolts with a impact gun. That's asking for trouble. You cross thread one and you will not be happy. Get them started by hand then complete with gun. Lastly I measure the amount that came out and replace with that amount. Never going to randomly put in 4 quarts when maybe 5 or 3 came out and that amount was getting me to the proper level in the first place. Thanks for the tip on the cross member. I need to look at my 16 and 04 HL and see if that is there for those 2 bolts are a real pain in the butt to remove otherwise. Great tip! Thanks for posting!

For a 2007 the torque specs for the lower arm bracket are 95 nm for all four bolts. Bolts that hold in the filter are 11 nm. Transmission pan bolts are 7.6 nm (yes, that is what the manual says). Thanks for the video. I wasn't sure if I was going to have to disassemble more of the front suspension or support the lower arm when removing the lower arm bracket. Looks like it is just a matter of knowing the torque spec and then reassembling.

This is great! 7 minutes and cover all the steps. I was able to do it. Thank you so much. Question: is really necessary to change the transmission fluid? I just figured out the fluid stick label says: "Notice: do not need to replace ATF under normal driving conditions" Well, I already did it. Mine is a 2012 with 114,000 miles. Thanks again

I know this comment is two years old but I firmly believe it is okay to replace the ATF. Nobody drives “normal.” We all drive city/highway, sometimes full throttle, sometimes going up mountains and hills. I’d change some of the fluid once I see a orange/brown tint.

Just wondering because my experience wasn't good 😕 I had 94 sr5 runner with a brand new engine from the Toyota factory then a service advisory talk me into getting a transmission flush. Well the transmission went out and I tried to file a complaint but nothing ☹☹ Now I have 07 Toyota rav4 so I am going to do the same way like you did! Thank you 🤙🏽🤙🏽

If you live in an area where road salt is used to melt snow during winter ,those pan bolts will have rust. Using a power tool to remove these bolts should be avoided because they can break. The threads are very fine and are held with locktite. They don't come off that easy with the rust so you need to use penetrating oil and remove these bolts slowly and only with hand tools. Put the pan bolts back with a nut driver to ensure it does not snap off.

Service Manual says to park on a level surface and run the Car till the Transmission fluid Fluid Temp is between 70 and 80 degrees Celcius, (You'll need a Scan Tool to see this Temp.) then the Fluid Level should be between the HOT marker on your dip stick. Measuring the Hot is more reliable than Cold because ATF expands. If it expands too much, it does when you have too much fluid in it, you'll get too much pressure and can get all kinds of problems.

For those who want a complete fluid exchange vs an approx 40% pan exchange: 1.) Remove the plastic shield under the front of the vehicle. Note, new assorted plastic push-clips are recommended. 2.) The radiator cooler transmission fluid out-fall is on the drivers side approx 3/4" OD, 3/8" ID rubber hose with spring clasp clamp. 3.) Disconnect the hose and attach an extension line to a translucent 1gal jug in an catch pan (for overflow/spills). 4.) The steel return line may drip into a second catch pan. 5.) Snuggly attach a clear extension line to the dip-stick tube with a funnel. (I inserted a clear plastic kitchen "baster" keeping the refill level from overflowing at top of the "baster"/funnel). 6.) Start the engine and put in gear (automatic) until approx 1/2 gal OLD is collected and turn off engine. 7.) Fill approx 1/2 gal NEW. 8.) Repeat for approx 2 1/2 gals until bright pink is dispensing. 9.) Reattach radiator/trans Return line. 10.) Adjust fluid level to the low side of the "Cold" mark on dip-stick (so you can top-off to the Hot mark). 11.) Drive vehicle until transmission is up to approx 115 deg. F and adjust fluid level to "Hot" mark. 12.) Reattach the plastic shield using new plastic push-pins. 13.) This should replace the trans, torque converter, and radiator cooler with All New fluid. Happy motoring!

Two mechanics have cautioned me about changing my transmission fluid for the first time on a 92K miles for my rav 4. They say I might trigger some problems, how true is that?
@MrPrios1
@MrPrios1 2 жыл бұрын
Suggestions, 1. hand start bolts only. 2. Measure what fluid you drained out and add exactly what you took out to avoid all the guesswork and mistakes. 3. Add fluid and test before you put all the covers back on in case you have a leak. 4. Honestly, I would just drain and refill every 40k and not bother with the filter until you hit 200 k. I drain my Toyota every 30 to 40 k with synthetic ATF. And I drive up and down the mtns a lot. 388k original tranny on my 2002 Sequioa.

@MrPrios1
@MrPrios1 2 жыл бұрын
@@abdalazizariff5154 The filter rarely needs to be removed and replaced. Along with the magnet it is there to catch metal flakes from normal wear and tear. The condition of the fluid is far more important. My 2002 Sequoia has 409,000 miles. Original transmission. I use full synthetic and Lucas. Drain and fill every 25,000 miles because you can only drain and fill half of what is inside the transmission. Also NEVER let anybody use that machine to flush and fill your transmission, they can damage your transmission permanently

@MrPrios1

@@kpremo88 Typically I can only drain 3 qts. So I put back 3 qts. If the fluid is clean, do it once a year. If the fluid is very dirty, I would leave it alone or you risk destroying the tranny. Ask me how I know. LOL

That’s going to depend on the type of gasket you get. If you slide your bolts through the gasket and it holds and you do not need it if it falls back out then you’ll need to glue the gasket down.

do a filter change like this one. Check the fluid against brand new color. If you wait too long to do it....you may be better to just leave it alone....sometimes the old fluid with particles in it are keeping the trans shifting better....when new clean fluid is put in the higher mileage transmissions can slip. If it were me, if the fluid is not too dirty, I would filter change like this, and maybe a full flush changing all the fluid if after 5-6k miles everything running good. Then full flush and filter every 60k after that. BTW I have a 96 chevy truck with 268k miles and never touched trans. Runs and shifts good...I dont dare do anything to it now.

If it is less than 60k I will say flush. After 20k or 25k tops miles then do drainage and replace the filter. Doing the flush won't replace the filter of course. I am not sure if flush would be recommended after doing the first drainage and replacing the filter since there could be a lot of wear on the transmission that flush may cause issues due to the pressure it uses to remove the old oil. I have a rav4 2011 and I did flush at 60k and now at 81k I am planning to do drain and replacing the filter this weekend.

Andy Garcia - yes it is safe and I would recommend it as a normal maintenance item every 40K or so. Cheap insurance. Do not believe Toyota telling you it is not necessary. If you have 67K I would do it. You would get roughly 2-3 quarts out per time and doing that 3-4 times would get you an overall good fluid quality. You could do it easily as part of your next oil changes. Thanks

Storm Rider : If you perform an oil flush 2 times and in the 3rd time you replace the filter, your vehicle gets the benefit of a 100% clean oil . unless you go to Jiffy Lube or any other shop where they under pressure force the oil in the car and do an oil change first and last do put a new filter. yes you got a point right there because a good amount of the dirty oil remains in the torque converter and the oil cooler . yes you are right. we do only 1/2 oil change so is good if it is done several times within 1000 miles and then wait till we have driven 50 000 miles to do this again. Have a profitable day.

There are 3 scenarios. Engine running and cold (just started for instance) which equate to the two lowest notches on the dipstick. Engine hot and running - this equates to the second highest set of notches. Lastly, engine cold and not running like first thing in the morning. Although this is not officially referenced it the manuals or anything and there is not any notches for this scenario, I have found it to be just as accurate in all cases for my vehicles. This will be a fluid level significantly higher than the hot mark notches. I made my own little mark to represent that level based on checking it when hot the night before. So essentially you can use any of these methods but the first two are the most commonly referenced. Thanks!
@njsongwriter
@njsongwriter 4 жыл бұрын
@@luptonpittman6520 This is actually an assumption and is incorrect. If you have a transmission without a dipstick then yes that temperature range (104° to 113°) is used to adjust the ATF level. (Actually that may be for the transmission in a six cylinder Toyota?) However, if you have a dip-stick like our 2009 model does the upper notches on the dip-stick are the level the fluid should be at when the transmission fluid has reached operating temperature. Operating temperature according to a Toyota repair/service manual is 158°F to 176°F. (Checked with engine running, transmission in Park and vehicle level.) When the engine is not running the level will be higher because fluid is not being pumped into the torque converter.

Total capacity is 8.6 quarts. Drain and fill requires 3.8 quarts. So yes dropping the pan would replace about 50% if the fluid. If each drain and fill resulted in a 50% change of fluid; the second drain and fill would result in 75% clean fluid and the third drain and fill would result in 87½% clean fluid. Actually, it would be less because you likely won't drop the pan for each drain and fill.
