US Federal minimum wage is a paltry $7.25 per hour. Many states have higher minimum wages than federal but not all of them. I don't think any of them are close to $20.30 per hour though. I have a hard time finding even more experienced positions that pay that well. What a mess.

Yeah exactly. As Ann said, there are no winners here. The baker should have realized their skill level and the cost. Part of their job is to keep expectations in check. They never should have said they could make the same cake or even close to it. Then, once again as Ann says, you got a ton of even basic things wrong like the color scheme.. so it's like the baker realized it wasn't going to be something they can do and then didn't even bother to really try. I don't agree the customer should get their money back because they likely kept the cake and the worker did deliver a product. I also think the customer should have done a bit more due diligence and seen like a portfolio of the person's work to know their skill level..

And keeping the product isn't really relevant for a perishable thing like a cake. Let's say the customer returned, what's the baker going to do with it? They need to sell it really fast before it goes bad, and nobody is going to pay anything near 200 dollars for that hideous cake, let alone at a few hours notice.

Of course the desired cake was worth more than 200 dollars, but it's not up to the customer to know what things cost in the industry. The professional vendor in this field needs to know this and tell them. Falsely claiming you can do something you know is beyond both your skill and the budget is fraud. If the customer had known, they could have found another vendor and increased their budget or simplified their order, but if they only find out on the day of delivery, it's too late to find an alternative. If you make a product of such low quality that nobody would buy it if they saw it first AND it doesn't even match the agreed order specifications, then yes you should give a refund refund.

Here, I'll help you quote myself: "I don't agree the customer should get their money back because they likely kept the cake..." The rest of your comments also don't make sense. If you're the one creating the cake and you create something completely wrong, let's use your dress example here, then that's your problem as the creator to resell it somehow. The person doesn't have to accept your wrong product. As for the customer knowing what would reasonably be delivered, that they could have actually known by looking at the decorator's portfolio. Every professional decorator has one because it shows your skill and what type of cakes you typically make. Also, claiming to be able to create it doesn't equate to fraud. You should go learn what fraud is.

This clearly isn't an entitled Karen low-balling. It's clearly someone who doesn't move in circles where people buy extremely fancy cakes usually and doesn't know how much they cost (which I didn't either until watching this). She seems to be a normal person for whom 200 dollars is already actually a lot of money and she saw this cute idea online and thought she would "splash out" with 200 dollars to treat someone on a special occasion. Taking advantage of her lack of knowledge and power (try that BS with a wealthy person and you will regret it!) is really scummy. The baker should have just explained that this result isn't possible with that budget (or frankly her own skill level) and suggested something simpler.

Compared with the cost of a basic cake, $200 is very expensive so it's not unreasonable for a non-expert to think the price sounded right. The person taking the order at the bakery should have known that getting that cake done correctly for $200 was impossible and should have either given a realistic price or set realistic expectations.

I think social media is giving people unrealistic expectations about what they can get from their local bakery. The inspiration for that second cake is really top tier. I really wish people knew their local baker isn't going to be able to do that. That is rare skill.

Yep, once you agree, you have to keep and keep and keep working until you've hit the budget (not including your own labour costs- that's a bonus when you work for yourself) and then present whatever the result is and apologize. Only then can you do it no-refund.

Anne's positivity and gentle advice is how I was able to make my daughter a barbie cake for her birthday. It was just a stacked cake to look like a skirt and shoved a barbie in it, but watching these helped me learn how to cut/stack cakes with frosting layers, keep it stable, add a crumb layer, and then decorative frosting flowers. My daughter LOVED it :)

As a 40+ guy with zero cake making skills (I can cook, but nothing fancy) it's the other way around for me, my 8 years old daughter made a magnificent chocolate cake for my birthday (all by herself, using just basic ingredients from our pantry). It was a mind blowing surprise for me, I knew she likes cooking but had no idea she got so good at it so quickly.

I'm so glad that ANTI-CHEF made an appearance - some of his fails have been pretty epic. I love how he never tries to hide how hard certain things can be, and perseveres in spite of his shortcomings. I love watching him learn over time, and get better and better at all the food things. He is amazing, naked and great entertainment. He really shows what it can be like for an average home cook to struggle with high-level cooking, and his work is just so great and informative.

My sister did a wedding cake for someone, it turned out absolutely beautiful, but she did it for $300 and she probably spent $900 in time alone as the couple also wanted a cake tasting of different cakes and slightly different styles that required her to buy special equipment. She also used the best ingredients she could find. I think it’s a good lesson as when one tries something for the first time and are confused about pricing, talk to a professional in that field first.

Another comment suggested a small cylinder that you then fill with liquid and float something that's just a little smaller than the opening of the cylinder. Then when you stab it acts like a syringe. Though it would make even more of a mess probably

For the negative space cake effect, I think a better way to make it work is not to use a balloon at all. I would use a cylindrical container, open at the top, but float a disk that is only slightly smaller than the container on top of the fluid. That way the knife would push the disk down (rather like a syringe) but because there is a small gap around it, the fluid would spurt upward. You could even have a smallish hole in the disk to help direct the fluid upward.

The issue would be hiding it with smooth icing, and trying to ice the cake with something moving/wiggling on top! I might be afraid of it leaking around the edges and staining the icing as well. But maybe if you hide it under a slightly thicker layer like some cake on top of the "plunger" and were planning on filming/serving it in a matter of minutes....

Decent amount of strength to keep the icing on, but flimsy enough that downward force would just push it in without any effort and it should theoretically fold into the cylinder and not obstruct the liquid coming out.

Re: the 200 dollar cake, I think you're right about the decorator's biting off more than they could chew. They shouldn't have accepted the order in the first place. The client also should have looked into what to expect from any particular cake decorator, of course, and found one that could actually deliver what would be requested, but at the end of the day it's unprofessional to promise a product that isn't possible.

I can feel both sides in the fairy cake debate. It was likely wrong to assume that you get an extravagant cake for $200 when you pay that amount for a basic and slightly fancy wedding cake. But I'd also be bummed if I paid a lot of money (and $200 is a lot of money) and got that result. Maybe the cake decorator should have communicated with the buyer when she realised that she won't be able to make the exact cake with the available time and money, offer to make a similar cake and find a solution before the disappointment sets in.

On the other hand, it is your job as a customer to check the person's previous work. Like normally if you commission art from someone you check their portfolio to see examples of their work. So you can somewhat accurately gauge if they'd be a fit for what you want. $200 is a lot of money, but it's nowhere near how much this kind of cake should have cost. I do agree though that this seems like a huge communication issue on the baker's side. They didn't bother to level expectations, figure out a good price, etc. They didn't even bother to get the *colors* right..

I wanna know just a bit more personally - did she get quoted $200 or did she insist on it? I've seen a good handful of people trying to shame bakers and stuff for giving them bad cakes for $$$ and then turns out, they basically bullied the baker into accepting too low a price and getting more or less what they paid for and being mad that they didn't get a $1000 cake for $100 [exaggerating]. Also! Not at all saying that this is what happened - I've seen people overcharge for work that's not worth it too, no doubt at all -- but I'm like so curious about the behind the scenes since cakes are one of those industries where you kind of need both sides of the story to know who's really in the wrong [if anyone!] I hope it was really just a situation of the baker maybe being too panicked or new to realize they undercharged/couldn't do the work/should say something ahead of time and tried to do their best. And I hope that the buyer was a lovely customer and it was just one of those things that sometimes happens.

@@Crow_Smith Yeah since cakes are largely an art project there's no standard really on pricing. So a lot of it does come down to what's available, what's being done, etc. That's why you get quotes and why you should be checking portfolios of the person's work. That bit alone would have been able to show what the person's skill level is and if they could do something like that picture of the mushroom cake that was wanted. What happens a lot of times is people see shows like Cake Boss and see these absolutely stunning cakes but don't see the cost. So then they go into these places wanting these cakes they see on media but they want it for way too cheap.. yet complain that it's already too expensive cause they don't understand just how much it costs them. I like how Ann included the price of the basic ingredients and showed how it was already nearing the $200.

I love cake rescue!! My mom and I made a bleeding cake for my sister's birthday last month and it was so much fun. The method we used wasn't intended to spurt, but it was much more food safe (and hooray no plastic to wrangle): we made a raspberry coulis and froze it in a disk beforehand to put in the middle of the cake as we stacked the two layers. After a few hours the coulis had thawed and the cake gushed beautifully when we cut it. It made me think of your channel, actually :)

It is a banner day when my two favorite KZbin cooking shows meet each other. I adore you, Ann -- and find Jamie / Anti-Chef SO inspiring. In eight years, he has gone from "I have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm going to try" to making Michelin star recipes. "I'm not going to give up without a *fight*" is his (extremely relatable) tag line. :)

Good for you for pointing out that $200 barely covered the cost for even that fail cake let alone the example. The baker shouldn't have promised that they could do a cake like that for that amount, but likewise the client shouldn't have expected so much work for so little money. Who the hell spends $200 for a baby's first birthday anyway. I'm turning 40 soon, and I wouldn't expect anything fancier than a chocolate caterpillar from the supermarket 😂 And I'd still be grateful.

I like the way we handle birthdays in my faith---we don't bother with them. We understand it's nothing but a day of celebrating oneself, and that isn't something God wants, so we don't have any of the trappings, ever. SOOO much easier than ridiculous, expensive, unwanted "celebrations" that are always disappointing!

Also, the argument that the birthdays mentioned in the Bible end unhappily is silly at best. The Bible doesn't mention indoor water supply (which was a thing for wealthy Romans) but that doesn't mean I shouldn't use tap water.

One of my biggest cake fails was a Black Forest cake. I did about 90% of it wrong. The cake itself was from scratch, it was delicious! But everything else went south. I watched Ann's videos, including a black forest cake (that might have been a fail? It's been a few years) and learned. I just gave it another try and it wasn't perfect, but it wasn't a fail and everyone loved it. Learning from videos is the only way I can produce anything of value. From cooking to baking to crocheting to knitting, I've learned how to make edible and usable creations! I REALLY appreciate the content creators who are actually creating. I wish there were more, as there used to be.

I was so surprised to see Jamie from Anti-Chef on your channel! Don’t judge him harshly! He is the first to admit he is not a baker, cake decorator or chef but he is trying to teach himself all these things! Something most people would never attempt! Check him out but I recommend starting with his early videos so you can see him when he didn’t know anything in the kitchen. Then you will understand how far he has come ON HIS OWN 😮!!! Some of the things he does when he’s attacking something he hasn’t tried before are hilarious!!! Including that cake! 😂😂😂 Yep I’m a big Anti-Chef fan! And a big fan of Ann’s, too!

I hate when people say "you should not expect to get what you ordered for the agreed price because it should cost more" Because... the customer doesn't buy fancy cakes often. They don't know what the price point *should be* and they are relying on the subject matter expert - the cake decorator/baker to give them clear guidelines. Now, IF the customer had contacted a dozen bakers, gotten $1k quotes each time, then found one with no fondant cakes in their gallery who said they could do it for $200? THEN I would have blame for the customer who was given the information needed but didn't like it and went looking for the answer they preferred. As it is - the customer placed an order, got a $200 price, paid it. The store was unable to provide what was ordered and should not have taken the order. It's that simple.

There are some discrepancies with the adorable mushroom cake. An avid baker would be getting all of those ingredients at cost and who’s to say this grandmother would’ve had a problem paying more, I mean that’s just the price the cake maker gave her unless there’s more to the story that we didn’t just hear. I mean she could’ve went into the bakery and said I would like to duplicate this cake at any cost or on the flipside came in and said how much does it cost for you to duplicate this cake and had the baker said $700 then she would’ve just said no so to me the baker was completely in the wrong. Again unless there was more to the story that I did not hear but the customer should’ve been given the opportunity to have the cake that she asked for and given the correct price that it would cost.

Thanks for the fun! Very good job! I wanted to relate that making really spectacular cakes is not as hard as you would think--IF IF IF you are truly dedicated, have the patience, and **LEARN HOW** before you start. Years and years ago, I was fortunate enough to live just a few blocks away from an old style cake decorating shop (you name it, they had it). They gave classes! The lady who owned the shop was very good and very patient. Of course, you paid for the class, but not that much, and bought your supplies from her. I made a couple of really spectacular cakes, but I learned how to use the tips, practice practice practice, all the component parts were done at home prior to assembly, and final assembly was in class, and it was easy. My favorite was a cake that looked like a picnic basket, half the lid open with all kinds of flowers pouring out. Desire, Time, Patience, Know-How! You can't just watch a quick video that may have been CGI'd or sped up or have parts missing, go into your kitchen, and make it! AARGH! But if you learn how . . . easy peasey and fun!

I know that this is not the point of your video but I am _so upset_ that that lady thought she could pay only $300 AUD for cake like that. The decorator shouldn't have taken the job, but people need to stop expecting masterpieces for rock bottom prices. I am in utter awe at your skills, even though you make it look simple, people need to understand how much those skills are worth. Also real flowers can be toxic on cakes, so be careful.

Yeah it's definitely an issue on both sides. The decorator seems to be new and didn't bother to even look at how much things would cost or how much time it'd take. I swear they took the job thinking "Sure I can make a mushroom" but didn't bother to even try to create what the person actually said they wanted. You can tell that part with how the decorator didn't even get the *basics* the same like the color scheme. As you said, the customer though shouldn't have expected that gorgeous cake from the picture at $200.. yes that's a lot of money for the average person, but that's nowhere near enough for the level of cake they wanted. Oh and also the woman corrected herself on the "real flowers" she meant they were supposed to be "real" as in fondant but the decorator just threw on some fake plastic flowers.

A customer who doesn't know the field can't be expected to know the cost of ingredients, time taken for decoration etc. I'm sure most people have no idea what goes into making a super fancy cake. I know I didn't. On the other hand, it is the job of a professional in that sector to know how much a particular product will cost (materials and labor time) and give a reasonable quotation. If the customer was told "what you want costs much more to make and I don't have the skill to do it", she could have found another vendor and increased her budget, or simplified her order. I'm "upset" that the dishonest vendor took advantage of this (obviously not wealthy or highly educated) customer's lack of knowledge by deceiving her into paying for a service she should have known she couldn't provide.

The thing is: For someone who is not very familiar with a craft, it is VERY difficult to find out which price is acceptable. Yes, you can look at other cakes and see how much they cost, but the really tricky part is to find out _which exact parts_ make the thing expensive. People may be able to count the number of tiers but won't realise that every tiny details costs time.

I think for the Taylor Swift cake if you use a ziplock bag or small plastic bag it would work better if you trap some air into it (like blowing in air with a straw), because trying to get an explosive splash reminded me of popping chip bags so I thought if there’s a big air in it, it might help push the jam or filling out more dramatically 😅😅

Yeah, as she mentioned, you'd need something pressurized to a like *perfect* level for the particular cake for it to come out just right. Which would mean both the bag and the knife have to be done well. You'd need to stab it at a certain angle and speed for it to come out right. I think what Ann ended up with is perfect once you'd use something a bit thicker to be more blood-like.

The minimum wage across the US varies between $7.25 an hour and $20 an hour. Based on the woman's accent, it's likely that she lives in a place with the lowest minimum wage. It's entirely possible that she believed she was getting a deal or only slightly undervaluing the decorator's work especially if it was a home baker and not a shop (cottage food law). Regardless of price, which would vary wildly across the country, the decorator was not skilled enough to complete the cake and time required to educate on the subject should've been included in the quoted price. Or even just buying actual flowers, which would also bring up the cost. The blame falls more on the baker/decorator than the customer because the customer has no way of knowing the projected cost of ingredients, time required to create it, their current skill level, and what the baker feels is a fair wage for themself. Whereas the baker is privy to all that information.
