Thank you - I originally found your video because somebody else posted it on their channel without attribution. Anyway, I lost the arm and spring in a conveyor belt car wash today, but they retrieved it for me. I was able to reattach the spring on both ends without removing the assembly by freezing the video at 4:03 and noting how the spring hooked the two other two pieces of the assembly. Edit: I have a 2019 Explorer. The manager thought I would have to get the Ford dealer to reinstall it.

A mechanic just tried to charge me $200 for the arm and to put it on my truck. He said that was a deal. I told him "No, that's not a deal. That's extremely overpriced just to change a rear window wiper arm. This helped and gave you a 'like' but personally I had the spline with the tapered threading on the side which it wasn't obvious if I should pull it off the shaft. My old wiper/arm had the plastic crack and came right off but when it came time to loosen the bolt and slide on the new arm it wasn't fitting with the spline there. So I wasn't sure if I had the wrong part or that piece also needed to be pulled off. I think a mention of the spline would be really a key piece of information that would be really helpful. I ended up using the 'puller' tool and the spline popped right off and the rest was trivial

Hi I just replaced my wiper arm and now the motor will not turn it it just makes this grinding noise. Do you know what I can do to fix this?
@Monkeychunks86903 жыл бұрын
oof- Hi Matt- thanks for checking in. This motor is a gear motor - I believe it is a worm gear that turns a main sprocket for a ton of torque for the wiper. Sounds like the gear teeth on either component may have stripped, especially if you're hearing a grinding noise. If you put your hand on it do you feel it vibrate when it grinds and does it only grind when the wiper should be traveling? I haven't ever done a replacement on my Escape, but I do know you can find a replacement one here for a decent price ( Rock Auto) . It may not be that challenging of a job either, but just time to get to it. Please let me know if you have any questions- sorry you're dealing with this. www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=3588405&cc=1503985&jsn=893

I bought the puller tool and it slips off every time it gets tight any advice
@HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews2 жыл бұрын
Ok so you put the new wiper arm on there and tightened it and it still falls down? The puller tool should help it to come off but it shouldn't have any use afterwards, nor an effect on how the nut tightens back on the arm. Did you inspect the vertical splines inside the bushing on the plastic arm and the same style splines on the motor post? If those are worn away then yes it will loosen and fall down again. The splines are like gear teeth which hold the position of the arm to the motor when the nut is tightened down. They're critical. If thats not the case, then your motor may be bad and the post not able to hold position. The motor shaft should have a lot of resistance to it. If the nut is tight and the splines are holding and its still falling down, its likely your motor.

Good info. However, my 2013 Escape SE rear wiper blade had a snap slot with about a 1/4" slide in the slot. So the blade would snap on then slide about a 1/4" to set the pin (slide the blade towards the arm spindle to set). I didn't know this. Needless to say, using a screwdriver to pop off the blade also broke the pin on the arm. Had to order a new wiper arm and of course could not get it off the spindle. Using a puller actually pulled the plastic off of the bushing so had to cut the bushing to remove it from the spindle.

It sounds like your motor post got turned too far. Try taking the wiper arm off again. With the arm off and the post bare, press the button to operate the rear wiper and then let it stop in its intended home position. Then, reinstall your wiper arm and hold the arm when tightening the nut so that you don't turn the post again by accident. Basically a reset of the home position for the motor

Would it be fine to apply copper antiseize instead of threadlock where the bolt tightens?
@HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews3 жыл бұрын
good question- I think yes on where the straight splines go into the brass nut of the wiper arm so that it doesn't get stuck again in the future, but no, you do not want to put it on the threads of the actual nut otherwise you could risk it loosening and coming off over time with vibration. You want that nut on there snug or else the wiper arm will lift off the motor post and hang loosely downward or strip out the splines.

@HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews2 жыл бұрын
Hmm that is interesting- you MIGHT be able to take the arm off and hide the hose inside the arched structure of the arm. You could also look at lawn sprinkler /garden irrigation nozzles from the hardware store to mount to the end of the hose and act as the sprayer to fan out the fluid before wiping. I'm not sure how much room would be left for your hose but I would think you could use a Dremel to maybe cut out a path for the hose then epoxy or zip tie it in place somehow...this would all be with the arm off the vehicle of course. Then maybe get an in-line connector to rejoin it to your vehicle's fluid line when you go to install it so it is a modular setup?

i want to remove the rear wiper arm for aesthetic reasons, but the screw hole is a problem.

Hi CVArts- are you saying that if you remove the wiper, you'll still have the hole in the glass where the motor post came through? If so, COBB Tuning makes a wiper delete kit where you can cap it off and it seals it up well (I've heard). Haven't tried it myself but it does exist.

What do you do if the housing separates from the bushing? Mine is still stuck on after using a pulling tool to get it off.....
@HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews4 жыл бұрын
Ouch- yes that can happen- the trick to the pulling tool is to get the very edges of the puller underneath the bushing itself- sounds like it slipped off the bushing and just pulled on the plastic. I've seen some people use a dremel with a small cutting wheel- if you go that route, make sure to use painter's tape a paper or plastic bag around your wiper motor to protect the paint of any metal bits that may come off during the cutting process. It's a bit messy, and you'll need to file down any rough spots on the post, but it's an option. I would recommend trying the pulling tool once more on JUST the bushing if that's all that's left on there if you haven't already? Please let me know- I'm sure this is a bit frustrating.

@@HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews I did try again with the tool you used and it kept slipping and I was seeing a few metal shavings at the bottom so I got scared. I'm just going to have to go to the dealership....

Sorry Michael, I'm not sure what an 09 Caravan might have for a threading spec. I'm pretty sure mine was a fine thread, but you may be able to find out on a Dodge forum OR on RockAuto if you look up the wiper motor for your car there? Perhaps it will have the threading noted? Sorry - I wish I could help more- i only have our Escape to go off of. Good luck!

@@HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews Many thanks for the response. I wound up ordering the manual from Rockauto, but even that didn't tell me any info on the thread type, so I ordered one off Ebay and prayed. Again, I bought every thread config. I could find at the local hardware store, and none of them felt "right" when threading. The ebay nut went on with no problem.

Oh no! Did you find a puller tool? That was the muscle that did it for most who have had a hard time with the initial penetrating oil on the bushing and the motor shaft.
