Richard is such a lovely man. I used to envy his great language abilities, but over time I have come to envy his love for being around other people. He his shifted my goal from striving to become a great polyglot to striving to enjoy social interaction. Alas, it may be a long journey, given my natural grumpiness. Richard is inspirational.

Nice post Gareth. It was encouraging to hear Richard talk about not getting burned or discouraged when we don't progress in a language like we would like. At 72 years old and still working full time, I do not get discouraged as I used to because I just want to be able to communicate and talk even if it is basic. I had French in college many years ago and decided to re-learn that. Then when I met my wife, she spoke Russian so I decided I would teach myself that.(altho she speaks very good English). Then recently decided to teach myself Spanish , so I could communicate with the Hispanic people in community. I have used my limited French in France and my limited Russian in Russia and Ukraine. I am learning these slowly because I find it keeps me from being too bored with one language. It actually motivates me to go back and forth. When I am able to retire, I will be able to spend more time, but until then I won't give up! -John R

Great that you are doing all these language, John. I guess each of mine would be better if I didn't have so many others on the go but, as you say, it keeps things interesting!

Great video. I always love to hear from Richard Simcott and he gave great answers. As a side note, I prefer if both the questions and answers are read out so I don't have to always be paying attention to the screen. I like to listen to videos like this while I'm doing other stuff.

Ah, interesting point, Nendo. I've gone for written questions in this series so far (several more coming up) but maybe I'll experiment with voiceover.

What was the name of Richard's language hero and does she have a youtube channel or blog etc?

Nicky Crane. She doesn't have a channel or blog, as far as I know. She has taken part in various language challenges on line and also attended the Polyglot Conference in the past.
