Thank you so much for this video Claude. I hope you are getting some donations/tips or monetary compensation for sharing your know-how. Folks - this gentleman does not have to post any of this. And he has to work in cramped, hot, uncomfortable confined spaces to do this kind of work, so keep this in mind when you attempt to do this yourself or when you hire someone else to do any work up in your attic. Sometimes we forget or are fast to dismiss the rates people charge to do work for us, but forget to consider that they are doing the uncomfortable or dirty work or tasks we ourselves might not want to do or just do not know to do properly. If this helped anyone to save some money and time, be sure to throw him a few dollars he saved you from paying a professional plumber's hourly rate.

Good video. I'm having my house re-roofed now. I will instruct the roofer to install new flashing to accommodate a 3-inch double-wall vent pipe as shown in this video and abandon the 50-plus year old oval asbestos-cement vent that was built into the garage wall. We don't have hurricanes or tornadoes where I live, and I've only had the pilot blow out once in 25 years, but I think the new Amerivent and Duravent caps are much more wind resistant than the stuff from my father's day and if they're installed "in the clear" in a garage space, they're much easier to inspect and maintain. 🙂

The safety valve switch broke because my flue pipe was like this and had to have the 4 month old heater part replaced. I am in the process of installing this exact pipe/process today/tomorrow. I can tell you with 100% accuracy that this needs to be done if you purchase a new water heater. I am glad to have found this tutorial/information video. Thanks again!

On my Ameri-Vent 4" The instructions say to line up the 2 seams for disassembly. When assembling it the instructions say to turn it to line up the seam with the X. then look at each tang to insure it is pressed into each square part. The triangle tang must be manually pressed into the long square part to LOCK the pipe. I used 1 older Ameri-Vent 12" pipe with the new Ameri-Vent B-Vent stuff, The older pipe didn't have an X on it but was the same in all other aspects.

Exactly what I needed, but I wish you showed how you made the connection to the top of the water heater. Do you screw in the duct hood connector to the connection sitting over the flue on the water heater? Also what do you do when you are screwing together the pieces of flue but the self-tapping screws are piercing the outside, but just bend the softer inside metal?

My GF became a sheet metal products manufacturer in 1912. My father told my GF he wanted to go out to the field and created Able Furnace Sheet Metal & Chimney Company. He serviced the community for 56 years until cancer took him. I myself followed in their footsteps. I did everything from heating and Ventilating to roof repairs, gutter and downspouts, made to order roof outlets, downspouts, chimney decks (22ga.) and chimney sweeping (1st to charge by the hour). we reside in a HOA development, and I inspected the termination venting system for the waterheater & central heating. Much to my dismay I found that the roof flashing and termination cap is a .025 combo roofflashing and termination. thus, as you are well aware of the dura-vent is about 4 inches below the cone, and I can easily put my hand between the MB and the flashing cone. Thus, CO is entering into the attic and also in the master bathroom and hall bathrooms ceiling fans. Also, we're getting back draft from very high winds and I do believe this in all causes the heat exchangers of both appliances to burn more rapidly, and also causes heat loss because of the rapid exhausting (because the proper type-B termination cap somewhat reduces the rapid gases exhausting) and thus provides a more efficient heat exchange! I commend you for providing such a comprehensive and easy to understand for the layperson! I would like to send you a video of our situation, and I also have a few photos as well. Sincerely, James Greenblat

How much does replacing this vent cost? In Texas?
@theartofplumbing2 жыл бұрын
Any where from around $6 hundred up to $2 thousand or more. This is one of those jobs a plumber would have to see. Is this a 1'2'or three story, does the roof have a sharp pitch not very safe for anyone to work off , some time it calls for a roofer to make adjustments then that's a added cost. Houston, TX area.

My pilot light keeps going out. I have a horizontal direct vent with a thick stainless steel pipe in the center, surrounded by a second pipe that seems like one of these tubes. The center pipe is not even connected to the center pipe going outside. I’m trying to find a horizontal kit that will fit for my unit. What do you recommend?

Wild American Just had same issue. Replaced the water heater to find out they come with a mesh “skirt” that goes around the bottom to keep dust/lint out of what I call an intake pipe that pulls air thru, up & out the flue. Mine was totally blocked with dust due to it being beside the dryer & back door. It was 11 years old, have never seen any mesh on a water heater but seems to make sense & no problem lighting the pilot now. I’m sure u’ve fixed it by now but just letting u know to keep the bottom clean & clear of dust, pet hair etc & attach the mesh to keep the pilot going. (My install guy apparently didn’t caulk something & it’s now leaking from the ceiling to the floor 🤦🏼♀️).

Hi Claude...A very instructive video!! I'm in process of replacing the old water heater in my garage, which vents straight up thru the ceiling, then about another 5' thru a crawl space, and out thru the roof...about 10' total. I'll be replacing it with new B-vent pipe. My question: does the draft hood on the heater support the full weigh of the pipe in a case like this or do I have to add some type of clamp above the garage ceiling to handle it?

I have to replace and reroute my vent pipes. right now it comes up about 4 feet, 90 degree bend that turns into 4 more feet through an interior wall, then another 90 degree bend (exposed in the laundry room) and extends about 2 feet till it goes through the roof. this originally went through a drop ceiling then the roof but I have the room gutted. I have a small tight area but I will make the vent pipe come through the wall a little higher so it's not exposed and in the ceiling. also on the roof this pipe extends about 4 feet. is that necessary to be that long outside? it's a colonial but the laundry room is its own room off the back of the house. Another question is what type of plate (dont know the technical term) do I use on the inside of the roof where the hole is? I have a stud about 2 inches from the hole in the roof. And we use 3" pipe correct? These guys didn't use double wall either so I will be using double wall this time around and try using 45 degree bends rather than the 90.

That is scare. If your gas water heater is in the basement, its most likely going strait to a chimney and its single wall flue pipe not the the flue pipe in this video, in that case you may need a liner installed in your chimney. I would recomend a heating and cooling tech have a look at it.
