I'm also using the bosu training mixed with softbox box jumps and burpees. I like to do burpees onto the bosu to simulate the initial pop up and then try to maintain my balance without falling off.

Hey brother, Went out for the first time today and was feeling pretty low, I couldn’t catch a wave at all, I tried for a good two hours without much luck, But......... the waves started getting bigger and something clicked and I caught pretty much every wave after that, I’m now starting to stand up, and in some cases was actually standing all the way until the wave died down and I was still standing on the board. I’m so happy now, progress is good, Every time I caught a wave I could hear your voice saying put your hands on the board not the rails, and slowly I managed to get that right, however I’m having trouble with the pop up, I keep landing my feet towards the edge of the board instead of the middle and keep falling off. Thanks for your videos brother!! You have helped me a lot. First time out and I was already standing, I probably looked like a drunk on a night out lol but I was up!! 👍

One of my favorite videos!! The incorporation of the medicine ball to mimic water is a game changer! Legs never shook so much haha Gave me the idea to throw my skimboard on top of the ball so I could space my feet out and get into a proper stance and honestly do not think there could be a training exercise, thanks dudes! :) 🏄🏽♂️🤙🏽

Oh! Also gave me the idea to put the skimboard on the ball and my legs on a swivel chair (only have one ball) in a paddle position with my chest on the board; then practicing paddling and quickly popping into a pop-up push up, way different than just doing push-ups! Thanks again guys!

Great video. I'm currently doing a lot of stretching and balancing at the gym. Would be great to get some insights on low impact exercises to build lung capacity and endurance (e.g swimming, meditation, rowing machines, stationary bike, etc.). A few times I've found myself out of breath in the water... so some tips on how to improve this would be awesome!!

I find the best "training" is to stand on my board while waiting for sets in the lineup. Your balance on the board will 10X. Easier to do the smaller the board is. After that would be doing wheelies or manuals on a skateboard. Or take an old skateboard deck and balance it on 2L bottle filled with water. Or voodoo board works too. 👍💪

Thanks mate but you struggle in your 20s. What about in our 60s after we've been surfing all our lives, but are rapidly losing our balance? (It's okay once up & our feet are in the right position). The main problem is leaping to our feet quickly - especially late-immediate-tuck-in takeoffs, and whitewash takeoffs (like the old days). Capping it all off I have torn/crushed knee cartilage in one knee. Maybe the balance board is better? I saw Medina does on-the-floor twists, on his feet but twisting and looking up?

So theirs alot of people out their saying that these type of exercises can hurt you rather than help you due to stability issues in certain muscles? Is this true?
@HowtoRip5 жыл бұрын
Possibly? But instability is cured by training - it may just need to be more isolated to work specifically on those areas before introducing holistic approach. This is why you work with a good trainer :)
@chopsnz885 жыл бұрын
Definitely if you've never tried balancing on a Swiss ball you can get injured falling off break a wrist. Kale has likely practiced this many times to get to a point where he can press a weight overhead but there is a high risk for little reward. I would rather stick to a single leg deadlift or a split squat with a bench supporting your back foot (Bulgarian split squat). This challenges your balance and develops your leg strength but without the high risk of wiping out.
@wessmithp55605 жыл бұрын
A lot of people get hurt surfing too;) start slow, trainer like kale said, and yeah, whatever you get out of this is likely going to make you less prone to injury in water...don’t forget to stretch before you paddle out;)

Hey Kale, I think your intention is great but kneeling/standing Swiss ball are not the safest exercises for most surfers to improve their balance! Most surfers are better to focus more on single limb strength, rotational mobility and strength than solely balance to improve performance. The lunges at the end are a better example of developing limb strength + balance others are single leg deadlifts, high box step up, lateral jumps, 180 jumps etc . When we balance on a bosu and squat our force production of our lower limbs decreases compared to a solid surface, this will not correlate with improved performance. Lastly Surfing is a skill, that involves a split stance squat, rotational hip movement and upper body torsion. ( You do great in your surfing and skating videos demonstrating this 👍 ) , time in the gym is better spent doing lunges, single leg squats, paddling muscle strengthening and other bodyweight conditioning exercises than focusing solely on balance. I do enjoy your videos though keep up the great work inspiring others to train and get better at surfing! Cheers Phil (Surfphysio)

@@HowtoRip I'm overweight and in terrible physical health compared to pretty much all surfers but I'm working on it. I had a trainer teach me to do squats on the bosu ball. It was a bitch at first; my legs were shaking like mad. But I've gotten good at it. Shit, if I can do it at 44 and a hundred pounds overweight....no, it may not be the safest thing. But neither is surfing, really. Anyway, I can get on and off a bosu without help now. That said, it helps to stand facing a wall on either the bosu or the ball. I used that as a crutch until I was able to do it on my own. You can put your hands against the wall for support at first and when you lose your balance. Works really well until you get the hang of it. Starting on the bosu was a good suggestion, Kale.
