Hello and welcome to another #30DaysofHoya! As promised, today you get a more beautiful plants - let’s try to forget that sad looking Hoya imperialis. Today we take a look at Hoya australis. In this video, we will look at both Hoya australis ssp. tenuipes that I believe is more common and easier to find, as well as its cultivar ‘Lisa’. We will take a look at Hoya australis ssp. australis with yellow margin on the leaves - a bit harder to find than the ‘regular’ H. australis, but still a very interesting (and a bit challenging) plant. I hope you will enjoy watching the video and learning more about this Hoya. As always, you can find the additional care sheet in the description below. Take care, and see you tomorrow for another interesting Hoya!

I love how you make sure not to touch new leaves on your hoyas. I am the same. When I watch people touch the new growth on their hoyas I am like: noooo.

Oh I have a story about that! I bought Hoya kerrii (variegated), it was imported and the new vine had no leaves yet, but the lady.... FINGERED THE VINE HARD because the growth looked so odd to her. She was like "What's this?!" TOUCH TOUCH TOUCH. I tried to remain calm and nice but inside I was screaming.

My australis is growing like a weed. It grows faster than my crimson queen.. like triple the growth!!! I have had it for approximately 3 months and its grown like crazy. I'm a little surprised to be honest I was expecting it to grow quite slow if I didn't kill it first. Its in my kitchen in a west facing window with a metal awning over it so it only gets some evening direct sun. I am scared to water it though I have noticed the new growth feels a little delicate and flimsyish when it needs water I think? We will see im still learning. I got it as a cutting from a really big mother plant that my neighbor has. When she gave me the cutting I didnt know what it was I actually thought is was a weed because it was kind of ugly. I have grown to appreciate its beauty though. Lol. It is only my second hoya and I have not had the crimson queen very long either. I also got my crimson from my neighbor but that one is more established in a 6 inch pot. I am very afraid I am going to kill them..at least my neighbor is next door if I have issues. She's the hoya queen!! She has sooooo many different types hoyas its crazy. They are the biggest hoyas I have ever seen.

The outer variegated Hoya in the small pot is Australis Blondie. I have one, and its growing insane amounts at the moment and thrown out about 20 new peduncles 😊
@BasiePlants
@BasiePlants 29 күн бұрын
Hoya australis ‘Blondie’ is Hoya australis ssp. tenuipes. The one in the video is Hoya australis ssp. australis. It is different than what is sold today as Blondie. :) It is pubescent, thicker leaves and a slower grower. But most importantly, a different subspecies of Hoya australis.

@BasiePlants ahh this is amazing to know. Thanks so much. I'm a new Hoya mum, and struggle to ever find any info on the Blondie! I'm so excited to see all of these peduncles though. They seem to be taking an awful long time to bloom. Is there anything I can do do encourage them?

I have a green Australis, it sure is a fast grower. No peduncles yet. I got a Lacunosa in the mail yesterday. It’s definitely stressed out. I watered it because it was dry, now I’m just going to leave it alone and see what happens.
@BasiePlants
@BasiePlants 4 жыл бұрын
Oh, I am sorry to hear about your lacunosa. How long did it spend in transit? Hoyas are pretty resilient, so I am sure it will recover! I find that if they spend longer time in the box, they get a bit stressed. I had some that took 14 days to arrive to me and the stress is there :) But they are getting better!

I was debating wether to cut it-and see if it will speed up the growth. I will also repot it in a larger pot. I love testing if in fact hoyas like being cramped in small pots. But I have seen that time and time again, the bigger the pot the more the hoya grows and especially grows bigger leaves. ( I was referring to the Australis lisa.) tha

Do think it could be that variegated plants grow a little slower than full-green ones from the same species?
@BasiePlants
@BasiePlants 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, green version does grow quite fast. 'Lisa' is supposed to grow a bit slower, but I think mine is too slow. Or I am too impatient. I will try to take one more cutting to experiment with it :)
@BasiePlants
@BasiePlants 4 жыл бұрын
That's right. They tend to grow a bit slower. But H. australis ssp. tenuipes is generally fast growing plant so I would expect even the variegated version to grow a bit faster :)

My all green australis I got at a nursery and its huge. The soil is just peat and I'm finding it is staying wet for a long time. I checked the roots, looked fine but not sure about that soil
@BasiePlants
@BasiePlants 4 жыл бұрын
When I got mine, it wasn't so big, but it grew really fast. It was also in pure peat and it stayed wet for a long time. I didn't really water all that much because I have a high humidity and at some point I left it too long without water so my peduncled dried off. When I finally repotted it I wasn't so impressed with the size of the roots. They were quite small and the plant grew a lot. I usually change the peat mix quite fast because it doesn't really work well in my conditions. If it takes too long do dry out, I would repot and try to remove as much peat as I possibly can without damaging the roots. Check for peduncles first. You don't want to repot if there are peduncles. I hope this helps a bit :)

You can try cutting it back, but if it's just a one node, 2 leaf cutting and it already activated one growth point, there is only one more that can be activated. You could try giving the variegated cutting more light, to see if that can stimulate more variegated growth. I don't know that reverted part can go back to being variegated.

Entertaining and informative! Btw I like ur accent🙂 Is it possible for an australis to have pointed leaves when they are young? I was sold an australis but I think it may be a carnosa Tricolor...
@BasiePlants
@BasiePlants 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! For me, they have never been pointed, even smaller ones have always been oval. Hoya australis ssp. tenuipes doesn't have as succulent leaves as Hoya carnosa. I also have a video with Hoya carnosa and I show my 'Krimson princess' there so it might be helpful!

My Lisa keeps dropping leaves:( i barely water it as all growers say Lisas hate water. Its in terra cotta and mix of cactus soil, cocopeat, barks and perlite, in filtered light. And still:(
@BasiePlants
@BasiePlants 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that! How often do you water it? I try not to let them get dry for too long because then the roots will die back and you are more likely to overwater the next time you water them. Is it inside or outside? They need more water in summer months, and then in fall and winter you can water much less. Is it dropping old leaves or baby leaves?

That's a good technique. Moisture meters don't work well for barky mixes. Try to give it just a bit more water in summer - don't let it get completely dry.
