Lol That beautiful piece of living history is the GREAT Mavis Staples of The Staples Singers, creator of "I'll take you there", "Let's Do It Again" and "Respect Yourself" just to name a few lol. They toured with the Great Martin Luther King Jr. back in the day and opened up for him. She's a living legend my friend. There is a video of him and Mavis meeting up to talk about this project and he was so (understandably) in awe of her. You should check it out if you have a second. 🖤

"nina" is nina simone. "billie" is billie holiday (sorry, lol). there was also "dylan" -- bob dylan -- "woody" -- woody guthrie -- "james brown" -- james brown, lol -- "joni," whom i guessing is joni mitchell -- and a half dozen other people. the name that's missing, imo, is sam, as in sam cooke, who wrote and sang "a change gonna come." other than that, it's a pretty perfect song.
