Hozier is such an amazing artist. Not just his voice, but his lyrics and how he is just a genuinely caring and thoughtful person who is very purposeful in his music and his activism. Every chance he gets he credits civil rights activists/artists who heavily influenced him and even inviting Mavis Staples to be on this track and giving her a chance to tell her story on a podcast he did. I love that you picked up on that. He has a lot of songs with political/underlying meaning about the world. If you want more recommendations I would say his newest “jackboot jump” is a great example. Cherry wine is about domestic violence and all the proceeds went to charities. For just general “holy crap this man can sing” Movement is a universal favorite. He just has a lot of great material.

completely agree, great post. I saw him live @ a castle in my and his home country of Ireland in late 2017 , but I had no real idea how gifted he was back then, ugh :(. Id say he come from a very gifted and Artistic family - his mother painted the cover of him in their pool for the 'Wasteland baby' album !

Fun fact! The people in this video are all activists from Ireland (except Mavis Staples who's an American civil rights activist who's in the Rock & Roll and Blue's Hall of Fame) and this was their first time hearing the song. I think the fact that that's their genuine reactions makes the song land with more force (dunno if anyone's said this yet but oh well lol).

the african american civil rights movement directly inspired the northern ireland civil rights movement where Irish people stood up for the right to vote and not be discriminated against in their own home - Hozier always quotes James Connolly (an irish revolutionary) “no revolution is complete without its poetical expression” before he performs this song as he says that quote is the inspiration for this song. he gives credit to poets, artists & musicians who have used their platform to actively fight injustice - i love that hozier truly shows his appreciation to his sources of inspiration - especially the black artists who have moved him

Hozier is a really good singer and songwriter from Ireland. He has 2 albums; Both are excellent. He is especially good live. His band is really good, too. Almost (Sweet Music), Cherry Wine (This song is about domestic violence), Shrike, Movement.. They’re all great.

I love pretty much anything about this song - Hozier's voice, the way gospel elements merge seamlessly into it, the way he alludes to the civil rights movement but can be applied to any act of resistance (I'm certain the 1916 Easter rising is behind that "not the waking but the rising"), as well as background elements like Mavis Staples always being a inspiration to Hozier. I think the song does a wonderful of balancing: the allusions to the civil rights movment are the most noticable, but theree are enough others so everybody listening has his own associations. The result is something that won't feel dated, or stop touching people, any time soon.

One of the women in the video is Bernadette Devlin now McCaliskey who is an Irish civil rights activist. She was given a key to NYC and handed it over to the Black Panthers. One of the men in the video is Eamon Mc Cann another Irish civil rights activist and another is an Irish actor who speaks out and another is Panti Bliss an Irish gay rights activist who is also sometimes called The Queen of Ireland. The Repeal sweatshirt the woman is wearing is about a referendum that was held and passed in Ireland to allow safe reproductive rights.

Hozier is super talented and hugely underappreciated imo, there are never enough reactions to his songs! He's sweet to his fans, does a lot for charity, writes genious lyrics, and his voice - you hear it for yourself :) his influences are blues and gospel ,which can also be heard; Mavis Staples told him during the recording "The amount of soul this boy has is ridiculous!" :D The idea of this MV is simple but powerful - the people in the video are activists and public advocates, and they hear the song for the first time during the shooting, hence the tears etc. There are tons of great songs by him, sexy and depressing, fun and cheeky, serious and thought provoking. My personal picks would be - To be alone (serious), Sunlight (bright, in love), Movement (sexy, in love), Dinner and Diatribes (horny lol), NFWMB (scared but horny), As it was(heart break) , Work song (love and sex), Jackboot jump (protest song basically). And many more :D
