I've been so looking forward to this reaction and it did not disappoint! Action is our power! Plus, he had the great Mavis Staples who adds so much to this! Thank you so much!!!

Nina Simone cried “power” in her songs. Mavis Staples marched next to Martin Luther King Jr. for civil rights. They name activists in the song like “Billie (Holiday) cried power, (John) Lennon cried power, James Brown cried power.” Also Joni (Mitchell), Patti (Smith), Marvin (Gaye), Woody (Guthrie), etc. Joni Mitchell spoke out for the environment, John Lennon and Woody Guthrie sang in opposition of the Vietnam war. Nina Simone was a powerful voice for civil rights and as more people fell in love with jazz, with her music, more people of all ethnicities began supporting the civil rights movement in the USA.

There is a saying I often think of. 'I used to think someone should do something about that. One day I realized that I'm someone."

It's so refreshing to see someone actually engage with the lyrics. Watching people just not notice or care about what he's saying when it's so easy to understand and beautifully written is a bit maddening

This is a tribute to the activists of the past, like Nina Simone, Mavis and all the other powerful activists named who cried "power to the people". I love Hozier so much, he has such a beautiful way of making a statement. Listen to his Jackboot Jump next please.

I liked how you really went into dissecting the political aspects of this song, most ppl don't touch that part. I don't personally believe it's just about class, I think it's the intersection of class and many other things, but I agree that those in power benefit from keeping us divided, especially by demonizing oppressed groups. And I think being able to disagree but respect other ppl as humans is important. One problem I have with it tho, is that in many places the "disagreements" are often about whether or not other ppl should have basic rights. So I don't blame ppl for not wanting to be friendly with those who disagree about their very right to exist y'know?

This 100%! I feel it is easy to say "put your weapons down and find compromise or common ground" when your rights aren't the ones in question. It's easy to find compromise on shared experiences, like poverty, etc, but if they still fundamentally disagree on my very existence, to the point of possibly wishing me harm or death, that's hard to overlook.

You're the first person I've seen (both irl and online reaction) who recognized "It's the light and it's the obstacle that casts it" as a significant line. In my opinion it's one of the foundational messages from his album, but thank you for paying attention to the lyrics

Great reaction to a remarkable song. You caught the words and nailed their meaning. His song Jackboot Jump is along the same vein...I think you would really appreciate it. Hozier is speaking to the people at a time of consequential change, and either those of us that want to be free rise to the challenge or we all fall. "You know good things are happening when the jackboot needs to jump" Give that song a listen if you're interested.

I was genuinely shocked when I heard you talk about the real issue at the core of most of our problems being a class war. Best reaction I've seen, and EXACTLY what Hozier intended people to think about when listening to the song. Unfortunately, the message doesn't always get across. People's material conditions have not been very conducive to them recognizing the ways we're all united- otherwise we would've united by now. You got it spot on, brother

LMAO that none of the reactors I've watched reacting to this song have known anything about the people mentioned in the song. "Nina cried power" is Nina Simone who actually cried, "Black POWER" during the Civil Rights movement in American during protests and sometimes from the stage when she performed. You get the word play in the title now? Criminy. People you're on the internet - Google some shite!
