Lyrics
You only feel it when it’s lost
Getting through still has a cost
Quietly, it slips through your fingers, love
Falling from you drop by drop
What I had left here
I just held it tight
So someone with your eyes
Might come in time
To hold me like water
Or Christ, hold me like a knife
We’re born at night
So much of our life
Is just carving through the dark
To get so far,
And the hardest part
Is who we are
It’s who we are
You and I burned out our steam
Chasing someone else’s dream How can something be so much heavier But so much less than what it seems?
Darling, we sacrificed
We gave our time to something undefined This phantom life sharpens like an image
But it sharpens like a knife
We’re born at night
So much of our life
Is just carving through the dark
To get so far,
And the hardest part
Is who we are
It’s who we are
You only feel it when it’s lost
Getting through still has its cost
Quietly, it slips through your fingers love
Falling from you drop by drop

That reminds me that he’d semi-joked years ago that heartbreak is best for the songwriting process. He said if in love, you want to spend your time just being happy, and not analyzing it. The second album, which was also amazing, was clearly written by a man in love, but this album tears your heart out.

"How can something be so much heavier, but so much less than what it seems?" This line has me shaking and rethinking once again whatever I'll make out of my pass through Earth. All we do to be remembered is futile, a human life is meaningless in a universal scale; and yet we carry the burden of knowing ourselves ephemeral, mortal, of being bearers of entire worlds and philosophies that will be lost to an eternity uncaring of how precious they were to us.

I find comfort in knowing that today, in 2023 human years, we are still finding pieces of a far Earthy past that helps us understand how we got to our point in time. There is something so magical in understanding the value of dust on a plant, a tiny seed floating through the air, space, eternity.

It will not be lost as we believe it to be. Someone, somewhere down the line will hear this music and feel the same way, and think the same thing. In that sense, human relatability lasts forever, in that sense, the love lasts forever. You and countless others will be immortalized in that love. It's what we leave behind :)

If someone asks me what song I believe shows what it’s like to be human it’s this one, this song is amazing I have no words. All of us are trying to hold onto our lives but it’s slipping from us and wishing for others to hold onto us, not caring if it’s gentle like water or hurtful like knifes. Trying to live and survive thinking we’re doing so much, only to realize we’re barely making a scratch and not knowing what we’re truly doing completely in the dark and scrambling. We burning ourselves out on what other people want, some us being forced to be extensions of themselves to accomplish their dreams. We sacrificed so much for nothing but a phantom of a life and it’s sharp like an image but hurts like a knife. I can’t with this song it’s so human, this is what it’s like to be human! God!!
@maryamnaseer478

I don't know who made the loud shouting sounds at the middle part, but good God. That was like the voice of an arrow cutting through Hellfire, up to God's hand. That was like all my pain erupting from me in sound. Like my heart tearing open, my mind as well, and the hurt gushing forth sounding _human,_ instead of making me into an unholy creature for feeling it or carrying it. Whether it was Andrew or another, that was a magnificent thing to put in this song.

I fall apart listening to this song. So beautifully written, so powerful and heartfelt. I can relate so deeply. The genius behind all of his song writing astonishes me; you can FEEL the heartbreak and sorrow behind his words and voice. It’s palpable. The line “Hold me like water, or Christ, hold me like a knife” really stands out to me. When someone holds water, they’re delicate, careful not to spill it. Often, they hold water because they NEED IT. A knife? They hold it roughly, firm grip on the handle, and it’s always used to tear something apart, whether or not it’s a human. It’s a weapon we CHOOSE to use because we WANT to destroy something, which could also elude to being used/taken advantage of. So Hozier is figuratively and literally begging to be held no matter what the circumstance, intention, or manner in which it’s done is. It also stands out to me because of how much the two objects being compared contrast eachother. Nourishing and Harmful, Life and Death, Needed and Chosen, Tool and Weapon, Mend and Destroy. Water and Knives embody polar opposites. Another meaning it could have is the way he’s viewed; associating him with water, which is good and keeps you alive, or regarding him as a knife, which hurts you and anything else it’s pit against. He’s wanting them to see him in a positive light, but he disappointedly accepts the alternative.

I am reading "crime and punishment" written by Fyodor Dostoevsky around the time I am getting lost in this song, and so its quite a potent time of my personal development to be pondering such things... (no I haven't committed any crimes to incite such a comment) ... >_> ... so anyway... I feel these lyrics are interesting when applied to act as criticism for cancel culture... I feel [cancel culture] is the gentler side of rape culture in that both seek to empower the perpetrator and invalidate the victim (at least in the most basic sense). But without this culture, who are we (all of us) without the social justice inflicted by the group think? Perhaps we can remember to wield our individual energetic contributions to the group more poignantly, rather than allowing our individual selves to contribute fear and fear alone to huge issues beyond our complete knowledge. Perhaps the group think is best wielded only by the forces of those who currently (or at least momentarily) are sobered and confident enough to see a path to righteousness - of course any individual is subject to their own biases regarding what actions ought to be divinely sanct and what otherwise is mere folly - but surely also the groupthink is subject to even further confounded biases that set back the whole of culture by a further step at least. Its certainly easier to lean back upon the remembrance of divine judgement rather than surrendering oneself to the judgement of the groupthink as ultimate. Remember that to be cancelled is nothing compared to the actual condemnation of death, which reigns eternal... as such, no human has yet proven to escape death... and furthermore, no matter how long one may live, when could they ever claim to have fully transcended death, since time continues forward into uncertainty? But perhaps I'm writing too vaguely to be understood in a Hozier comment section... I've had a few drinks tonight... enjoy the full moon, everyone... ♡

You only feel it when it's lost Getting through still has a cost Quietly, it slips through your fingers, love Falling from you drop by drop What I had left here I just held it tight So someone with your eyes Might come in time To hold me like water Or Christ, hold me like a knife We're born at night So much of our lives Is just carving through the dark To get so far And the hardest part Is who we are It's who we are You and I burned out our steam Chasing someone else's dream How can something be so much heavier But so much less than what it seems? Darling, we sacrificed We gave our time to something undefined This phantom life Sharpens like an image But it sharpens like a knife We're born at night So much of our lives Is just carving through the dark To get so far And the hardest part Is who we are It's who we are You only feel it when it's lost Getting through still has its cost Quietly, it slips through your fingers, love Falling from you drop by drop
