"How can something be so much heavier, but so much less than what it seems?" This line has me shaking and rethinking once again whatever I'll make out of my pass through Earth. All we do to be remembered is futile, a human life is meaningless in a universal scale; and yet we carry the burden of knowing ourselves ephemeral, mortal, of being bearers of entire worlds and philosophies that will be lost to an eternity uncaring of how precious they were to us.
@pilargonzalez8442 Жыл бұрын
I find comfort in knowing that today, in 2023 human years, we are still finding pieces of a far Earthy past that helps us understand how we got to our point in time. There is something so magical in understanding the value of dust on a plant, a tiny seed floating through the air, space, eternity.

It will not be lost as we believe it to be. Someone, somewhere down the line will hear this music and feel the same way, and think the same thing. I don't know who made the loud shouting sounds at the middle part, but good God. That was like the voice of an arrow cutting through Hellfire, up to God's hand. That was like all my pain erupting from me in sound. Like my heart tearing open, my mind as well, and the hurt gushing forth sounding _human,_ instead of making me into an unholy creature for feeling it or carrying it. If someone asks me what song I believe shows what it’s like to be human it’s this one, this song is amazing I have no words. All of us are trying to hold onto our lives but it’s slipping from us and wishing for others to hold onto us, not caring if it’s gentle like water or hurtful like knifes. Trying to live and survive thinking we’re doing so much, only to realize we’re barely making a scratch and not knowing what we’re truly doing completely in the dark and scrambling. We burning ourselves out on what other people want, some us being forced to be extensions of themselves to accomplish their dreams. We sacrificed so much for nothing but a phantom of a life and it’s sharp like an image but hurts like a knife. I can’t with this song it’s so human, this is what it’s like to be human! God!!

I fall apart listening to this song. So beautifully written, so powerful and heartfelt. I can relate so deeply. The genius behind all of his song writing astonishes me; you can FEEL the heartbreak and sorrow behind his words and voice. It’s palpable. The line “Hold me like water, or Christ, hold me like a knife” really stands out to me. When someone holds water, they’re delicate, careful not to spill it. Often, they hold water because they NEED IT. A knife? They hold it roughly, firm grip on the handle, and it’s always used to tear something apart, whether or not it’s a human. It’s a weapon we CHOOSE to use because we WANT to destroy something, which could also elude to being used/taken advantage of. So Hozier is figuratively and literally begging to be held no matter what the circumstance, intention, or manner in which it’s done is. It also stands out to me because of how much the two objects being compared contrast eachother. Nourishing and Harmful, Life and Death, Needed and Chosen, Tool and Weapon, Mend and Destroy. Water and Knives embody polar opposites. Another meaning it could have is the way he’s viewed; associating him with water, which is good and keeps you alive, or regarding him as a knife, which hurts you and anything else it’s pit against. He’s wanting them to see him in a positive light, but he disappointedly accepts the alternative.
