I am glad that this server is back up and running, and I like the design of these HP servers for card expansion options. I have often wondered if there was any value in purchasing four-hour service protection plans from companies, and this rather puts me off of ever trying it. Of course, I do not manage any important data centers, but I should much rather pay less for more reasonable time allowance on service. Thank you for giving us a look into this server, Morten. I have an HP DL585 G5 that I want to get up and running soon. I need to pour some processors, PVMs, RAM, and disks into it. Thankfully, those are all cheap components on that model now.
@MyPlayHouse9 жыл бұрын
Hi +Tyler Barton We do not pay that much for the 4 hours service protection plan,,, and this might be why :-/ I really need to get arount to play with my AMD optron blade servers to... Thank you for watching! :-)
@tylerdoestech9 жыл бұрын
+My PlayHouse (Morten Hjorth), I would be interested to see if those blades can take eight or sixteen core Opterons. AMD has sort of abandoned the Opteron line much to my dismay. In its heyday, it was powering the world's fastest supercomputers, and its revolutionary memory addressing and hypertransport links were far superior to Intel's offerings. Now AMD seems to be focused only on a couple low power eight core models for current architectures, which makes me a bit sad.
@MyPlayHouse9 жыл бұрын
Hi +Tyler Barton It´s not good with no competition at all :-/ but not many used AMD,, we did also not use them. It´s some very old CPU i got in my blades,,think it is dual cores.. they are from 2006 Thank you for watching! :-)

I couldn't have even dreamed of those folding memory cartridges. It's a bit disappointing that this technology isn't available for self-built servers, as far as I know!
@MyPlayHouse8 жыл бұрын
Hi +NO I DIDN'T Well it does introduce one more poseable error,, the cartridges. But that is a lot cheaper to replace then the system board. The IBM x3850 M2,, has something very similar,, and that server is very cheap. Thank you for watching! :-)

Good old SPI board. Typical to replace those. The Memory Cartridges are actually quite amazing now, compared to the DL580 G7. They have a little light that will light up on the cartridge and show where the problem is located, even with the CPU/Memory tray out. Noticed this the other day with one of these that had a cartridge/memory error (vague problem I was given). Good video man.

I remember someone commenting on another video accidentally wrote that Windows 10 requires 1TB of RAM. I joked that I was really glad I didn't use it in that case, because most motherboards can't hold 1TB. But now I've seen one that can. That's 128 times the amount of RAM found in a typical desktop PC with 8GB... or 256 times what you'd get in a cheap laptop.

@JoshuaNicoll8 жыл бұрын
This is why if I ever get a job or own my own centre, I'll keep all spare parts on site because that kinda downtime is completely unacceptable for a work unit that is down, even an hour can cost thousands depending on what that server was doing.

Saw 1TB RAM I was pretty sure right away it was a virtualization node. Neat your company lets you make videos like this. How many VM can something like this host? Something like this is crazy to me, I work for a college and we just retired some servers with 512MB RAM, I know there are some others there that are not much newer. I think our best server is a lenovo tower which has I think 8 HDD bays, not sure what it will max out at, but it's really overkill at least right now as it is just running vmware workstation and a Cisco prime VM. I don't know why I watched one of your videos before and thought these things were all at your house I was like what on earth are you doing running your own business hosting some service.

My PlayHouse hey Morten, what does this mean? - Because I'm searching an DL580 gen8, to use it as a ESXi host in my VDI Environment. I had the DL580G7 in use of this job, than switched to an ML350PG8, which sometimes doesn't have enough power, and doesn't have enough PCIe Slots - cause I have two FirePro S9100 and an WX9100, which I all want to use for GPU Passtrough on the Workstations using GPGPU, but can't cause it will overlap 3 other PCIe Slots. An other reason is the fact, that I have a ton of 8GB and several 16GB Dimms, but on a scale of 0 to 10, the ML350PG8 memory management is annoing me around an 11... (-While the DL580G7 eats just everything). Could you make me a contact, if there's an chance, to buy a used DL580G8 from your employer? Greetz Django

you might want to NOT use an SD card for booting ESXi on anything that has an iLO4. That's Gen8 and Gen9. HPE has confirmed that the iLO4 firmware that manages the SD media slot is causing random disconnects during uptime. this is not yet resolved to present day, 2016. Use USB sticks on the internal USB slots instead since they are managed by the C600 Intel chipset. it's nice you're giving tours inside the server room.

We have stopped using HPE service and warranty for our small MSP shop. It's just to much hassle and I have never seen them actually meeting any SLA (4 hours, 8 hours or even next day), we just get the standard 1 year warranty and after that we just fix it ourselves. Just buy the parts from a specialized local HPE/EMC/Dell/Cisco parts supplier and replace what is faulty, cheaper and faster than waiting for HPE. And we are just a small company with minimal turnover, I would have thought buying this much gear you have in the datacenter (must be more than a million euro's worth of gear) would have given you some special status and they would know you by first name, but obviously looking at your video's: they just don't care. We also have 2 full racks in a our datacenter and we stopped buying HPE all together there, we now use Supermicro with support from a local reseller. I could not be happier, they meet their SLA's with flying colors and the hardware is half the cost of HPE also: servers come preassembled with all the hard disks installed, tested and delivered by someone from the reseller and include a 5 year warranty.

+smallenginedude71 well my 2009 dell full tower work station PC can support up to 192GB, and it would fit up to 384GB but the chiset couldnt address it so i would assume that other servers with more processors or better chipsets could do it, and IIRC servers would often have multiple ram slots per channel, where as mine only has the standard 1+1 configuration per channel, i think i've seen it where a server woiuld have 3+ channels but the wam was configured in like 1+4 configuration, so instead of just the standard 4-6 slots per processor it was however many channels x5 and then there are daughter boards, iwas planning to buy a used dell R900 for like $250 with 4 processors and a TON of storage and PCIe slots, and i come to find out the thing has 4 ram daughter boards for DDR2, a normal board would max out at 8GB, maybe 16, but this dell maxed out at i believe either 256 or 512GB CRAZY for 2007 or whenever it was made

Actually Minecraft benefits from higher clock speeds, rather than cores. It also doesn't need more than 1GB of RAM for vanilla (Modded will need higher) and server integrated video cards preform terrible on anything but getting basic tasks done. So playing Minecraft on this in it's current configuration would not give you good frame rates, where the integrated graphics on the server would be the most of the bottleneck.

Alexander Keith Well I never know as videos like this with 1TB RAM get a lot of views by people who believe that RAM is what makes a computer good and fast. I have even seen gamers buy a computer because it said 16GB RAM and has a cheap AMD A4 Processor and no dedicated graphics.
@MyPlayHouse8 жыл бұрын
Hi WaynedudeProductions This is in no way of form a gaming server, It's high end enterprise server for virtualization. I do see the gammers finding this and thinking whoo but this is a $40.000 server and Yes for mine craft you can get a better PC for this, for like $500. You might like the video where i Upgrade this server from 1 to 2TB RAM :-) Thank you for watching! :-)
